msantos··on The Only McLaren F1 Technician in North America
Another McLaren F1 funfact: McLaren used to buy a bunch of old Compaq laptops for spare parts almost 20years after that laptop had reached EOL.

msantos··on British wine glasses have got bigger over the years
The article doesn't seem to highlight that English wine and British wine, are entirely different beverages according to the law.

British wine cannot be sold or market as actual proper wine because it's not real wine. It's just an alcoholic beverage that uses, mostly imported, concentrate grape juice.

While English wine is actual wine made from vines grown in England.

msantos··on Western fast food companies are aggressively expanding in Brazil
They are, but the way their are (over)cooked may lead to loss of great chunk of nutrients.
msantos··on Western fast food companies are aggressively expanding in Brazil
You are spot on. There's even a local fast food chain "Giraffa's" that serves that - slow cooked food, then microwaved/heated in shop premises and sold as fastfood.

The typical average Brazilian lunch is loaded with overcooked dishes - read: wasted nutrients, dripping with vegetable oil and sugar (fructose and others), occasionally covered with a couple of lettuce leaves and freshly sliced tomatoes.

msantos··on 'Serious' security flaws found on official UK tax site
Brazil is not much different. And to make matters worse, almost every Brazilian government agency that offers online services do so using their "self" signed certificates. Now imagine how hard it's to educate people not to click on dodgy websites and certificates, when the whole government does exactly the opposite.

I say self signed certificates because it's been 10 years that Brazil nic is trying to get its CA approved.

msantos··on Art thieves caught after Googling the stolen art pieces' author
TL,DR;

“I outsmarted the guy,” Gundlach [the art collection owner] says about the theft. “I figured out that he was a street criminal who didn’t know anything about art because of what he took, and I figured out that sooner or later he would Google the signatures of all the artists.”

"According to Gundlach, his Google theory led law enforcement authorities to the only other person in the area who conducted an Internet search for his grandmother’s name after the heist. The thief was arrested and all of Gundlach’s paintings–including Johns’ “Green Target”–were recovered.

msantos··on Sony Got Hacked Hard: What We Know and Don't Know So Far
> "It's changing our business," says one producer of its impact on Hollywood. "From now on, money and time will be allocated by studios to deal with this full-time."

Shame that most of Sony's Finance and HR are blaming the IT department - so bloody typical!

"Everyone’s looking to the IT department to say, ‘How did you let this happen?'" said one employee in Sony Pictures’ finance department." http://fusion.net/story/31116/inside-sony-pictures-employees...

msantos··on Tech firms anti-terrorism efforts criticised in Rigby report
Those people would probably be put on watch-lists and unless they are already in one of those lists, no further action would be taken.

Or so this is what I gather based on the ISC report describing the MI6's monitoring of the two terrorists who killed the soldier.

msantos··on Tech firms anti-terrorism efforts criticised in Rigby report
> Great, another terrorist attack used to justify restricting freedom and privacy

The way things stand, I agree that there's currently a big rush in the UK to approve wider snooping laws

> The report seems surprised that Facebook failed to hand the guy over to the authorities because he said he wanted to kill a soldier online.

Facebook had already taken down several of his accounts because they were deemed offensive and used to spread terror stuff (videos/hate speech). The ISC report says Facebook took the content offline and didn't forward the matter to the authorities.

msantos··on Al Jazeera Investigates – Broken Dreams: The Boeing 787
I don't believe for a second that the claims were portrayed in a sensationalized fashion. Those are serious allegations that were just brushed off by Boeing's PR folks. Just as the legal, albeit morally questionable, cosy relation between FAA regulators and Boeing lobbing co.

If the aircraft wasn't safe it wouldn't be flying today. But questions regarding QA must be addressed before it's too late (i.e. UA811).

msantos··on Al Jazeera Investigates – Broken Dreams: The Boeing 787
This is some pretty shocking stuff. Even some people close to the project openly saying that they would not fly the B787.

msantos··on Ask HN: What did I do so wrong in this coding interview
Your great feedback takes me back to something I've heard in a conference sometime ago.

These are not the speakers exact words but nearly..

... unless the role and the job post clearly state a particular framework as pre-requisite,

resorting to frameworks in an attempt to impress interviewers when applying to a senior role

is the worse thing you could do.

i.e. just because you know your way around Photoshop that doesn't make you a designer,

it makes you a Photoshop operator.

The same logic applies to coders who are too focus around frameworks.

They are not necessarily good programmers.

msantos··on Ask HN: What is a project I can complete in a night?
A Raspberry Pi with motion detection and SMS.

I've built one using an old nokia that supports AT commands.

Pretty fun stuff and no soldering required. Next up I'll try adding a camera and send MMS messages through the mobile phone with photos when motion is detected.
