msane··on Returning to Linux, not impressed
the fact that his username is INTPenis ... doesn't quite elucidate it either, actually.
msane··on Blue Ocean
I honestly think it holds the project back.
msane··on Uber's Loss Exceeds $800M in Q3 on $1.7B in Net Revenue
Demand does work that way.

Why does a drug dealer give free samples at first? ... Creating demand.

What they will not have for long though is a monopoly on supply in India.

msane··on Blue Ocean
This looks great. After this the next step for Jenkins should be to change the name.
msane··on Uber's Loss Exceeds $800M in Q3 on $1.7B in Net Revenue
It's introducing people to the service and acquiring market. Better prices come later.
msane··on Cancelable Promises: Why was this proposal withdrawn?
A common case is for typeahead completion. You have a requst to the sever in flight to get typeaheads but the user has entered more characters and triggered another request. Now you would like to ignore the old one. Since async calls are not guaranteed to arrive in the same order they were sent, it would be nice to cancel the old one instead of maintaining logic to ignore it.
msane··on GitHub lost $66M in nine months of 2016
> I think Atlassian is the company that makes the most out of the git marketplace

Think or know? For enterprise version control, I would be surprised if they made more than Github. I'll take enterprise Github over Stash any day.

msane··on Interview with Max Levchin
I think you nailed it about his drive for successful serial entrepreneurship. Slide was sold for an ok price but was shut off. I don't know how Levchin fared at Google but I assume he probably didn't like working for someone else. I think he chose an area where it was almost guaranteed they would make a lot of money / perceived success. Affirm is definitely that, they will make a lot of money, but it is not far off from payday loans and rent-to-own furniture, no matter how good the PR is.
msane··on Interview with Max Levchin
Do you think retail credit lending isn't sleezy, dang?
msane··on Interview with Max Levchin
Having known Max, I stand by my comment.
msane··on Interview with Max Levchin
appreciated
msane··on Interview with Max Levchin
> He wrote all of PayPal's fraud algorithms and built the entire platform.

And that's pretty difficult for a giant lumberjack!

msane··on Interview with Max Levchin
I can't believe this guy is into credit lending now. A bit sleezy tbh.
msane··on How leaving a corporate job to join a startup fucked me up and sorted my life
Please don't speak like that here.
msane··on Reflecting on the Right to be Forgotten
Force would be misleading, it's more like "enable"
msane··on A Nasal Spray That Was Supposed to Replace Sleep
Interesting story, but meta-clickbait.
msane··on Apple Watch sales to consumers set record in holiday week, says Apple's Cook
Was at Best Buy recently, the Apple Watch display table was much huddled around.
msane··on Show HN: Victory – ReactJS library for building interactive data visualizations
I like the minimalism of the demo charts.

Most charting frameworks tend to have default configurations which demonstrate more features than necessary as an advertisement of their competence for potential users, who are likely to copy default configuration and also take demo charts as cues on what charts should look like. It isn't the only dynamic which causes charts to tend to have superfluous or untuned features but it has some effect.

msane··on AWS X-Ray – Distributed Tracing System
Thanks
msane··on The Django Project Debates User Tracking
Someone proposed tracking django developers using the django command line? What a ludicrous and creepy idea.

edit: why downvote? that's what it says:

> the developer commands: startproject, startapp, runserver

msane··on Uber Now Tracks Passengers’ Locations Even After They’re Dropped Off
It's in the app permissions!
msane··on AWS X-Ray – Distributed Tracing System
Ive been pretty impressed by the latest AWS services. There are a ton of them though. I wouldnt expect anything different from a system designed to accomodate arbitry infrastructure. I'm considering deploying to Lightsail next, which looks like refreshing simplicity for smaller projects.
msane··on We Tracked Down a Fake-News Creator in the Suburbs
I suppose you would watch the world burn.
msane··on We Tracked Down a Fake-News Creator in the Suburbs
Of course. "Do you really think" it's fine to encourage them further?
msane··on We Tracked Down a Fake-News Creator in the Suburbs
Wow. Thanks for the insight into this psychology. It's all greed with you then isn't it? You'll lie to people and de-educate them for good money. Perhaps you would consider being a slum lord or a pimp or a drug dealer for the right price?
msane··on The Case Against Python 3
such smart. impressed. "p2" "p3". knows unique terminology. literal genius. so smart. A dozen programming languages just for fun? You definitely know what you're talking about and have very worthwhile contributions. People should listen to you.

I like what you said about self-obsessed project. It's clear that you have a very well reasoned position, not just opinion. What you say makes irrefutable sense.

msane··on Pipfile for Python
It contains requirements. The format is custom and it's text.
msane··on Children exploitation via YouTube
When it can, detecting thoughtcrime might not be far off ...

AI could soon filter some of this stuff or screen it to alert humans, which will obviously be a good thing.

But I think it's up to us to adapt to new technological environments. Parents shouldn't be allowing their young children to post videos of themselves on youtube for a variety of reasons. And kids should be warned not to do things strangers on the internet ask them to do, just as we warn them about strangers on the street.

msane··on Stoicism: Indifference is a power
I'm not knocking stoicism, it's a great outlook. But it asks us to have some perspective. A weakness of Stoicism is that it can allow people to attribute too much of thier emotional and intellectual success to thier own powers, when lack of physical comfort can be a limiting factor on having any intellectual life at all.

You should remember that stoicism was concieved amongst the elite of their time and place, who worried least.

Modern population density also makes comparisons of the contemporary 3rd world with ancient Greece rather far-fetched.

msane··on Stoicism: Indifference is a power
> Do you really imagine that everyone not in the first world is constantly suffering?

Of course. Water sanitation is a big thing. Access to affordable food, the list goes on ...
