mrzool··on I made a super simple diff tool that's free and has no annoying ads
Good point!
mrzool··on I made a super simple diff tool that's free and has no annoying ads
Shouldn't this be a show HN? Also, who’s the target audience? I assume anyone familiar with diff would already know how to use it in the terminal.
mrzool··on Show HN: I made a tool to HTTPS your localhost
You lost me at "AI assistant help".
mrzool··on Apple apologizes for iPad 'Crush' ad that 'missed the mark'
> destruction of low-tech artistic tools triggering non-tech people

This was really poorly worded and sounded very elitist and dismissive, I trust this was not the intention.

mrzool··on Apple Watch Ultra 2 Hacked
> Why the hell would the (hypothetical) attacker lose precious time doing something like that.

Because it’s probably kids messing around.

mrzool··on Why Charging Your Gadgets over 80% Is Such a Bad Idea
Oh I see, I misread :)
mrzool··on Why Charging Your Gadgets over 80% Is Such a Bad Idea
That’s interesting, do you have any source?
mrzool··on Not setting up Find My bricked my MacBook
It’s not a good thing to lock out users who are clearly and demonstrably the owners of a device. Automated protections are good, but there should be procedures in place to handle cases like these.
mrzool··on Show HN: Classic Video Poker
> However in my opinion (at risk of getting everyones ire) - I think the ace is the "1" card.

Except that poker is an established game with clear rules where the ace is the highest card?

mrzool··on NeverSSL
> I think they didn't explain the purpose very well.

I agree that they do a very poor job at that. I found the website interesting only because I had prior knowledge of its main use case — I came across it reading the comic "how airports lie to you with DNS" by Julia Evans:

https://wizardzines.com/comics/airports-lie-dns/

Otherwise I would have probably just closed the tab without giving it a second thought.

mrzool··on A New Heatwave is Forecast for Western Europe as we head into October 2023
> This article is brilliant actually and really brings home just how crazy this year has been and still is.

The entire website is fantastic. I've been subscribed to their RSS feed for several months now, it has quickly become a favorite in my feed reader. Science-based, in-depth weather nerdery without clickbait/sensationalism.

mrzool··on Apple Maps has gone from being the worst thing Apple have ever made to the best
Also in Europe as soon as you leave a major city.
mrzool··on jq 1.7
I understand where you're coming from and often feel the same, but I'm also afraid that this is a clear case of inherent complexity: querying JSON is just a complex problem and requires a complex query language, regardless of how well a piece of software implementing it is designed. The same is valid for regexes of course.

Never heard of them until now...

mrzool··on UltiSnips – Snippet Solution for Vim
Apologies, I haven't logged in for a while. This article by Drew Neil explains it better than I ever could:

mrzool··on UltiSnips – Snippet Solution for Vim
I might be old fashioned, but I think that if you learn the Vim way you'll have no use for a snippet manager. Also, that using a snippet manager will prevent you from learning the Vim way.
mrzool··on The Future of the Vim Project
Ubiquity. I have Vim on every machine I log into without installing anything extra.
mrzool··on Bicycles: An Antidote to Throw-Away Culture
Been riding daily for most of my life (I’m 39) and had to patch a flat maybe 4 times in total. Try thicker tires?
mrzool··on Ask HN: How much do you work, what's your salary and how experienced are you?
Is your contract really for 16h/week, or that's your honest assessment of how many hours you actually work in a week?
mrzool··on Every Mastodon user has an RSS feed
I thought they did when they cut off 3rd party apps and removed the docs, but I might be mistaken.
mrzool··on Every Mastodon user has an RSS feed
I was so happy to see that Nitter kept working after they killed the API. Now I use their RSS feeds to keep up with my favorite accounts since I’m not on Twitter that much anymore.
mrzool··on Every Mastodon user has an RSS feed
That would be unthinkable now. Crazy how things have changed.
mrzool··on Every Mastodon user has an RSS feed
In other news, the blog of the RSS Advisory Board, inactive since 2014, started getting updates again :) It was a pleasant surprise seeing new articles from them pop up in my feed reader again after such a long time.
mrzool··on Photomator for Mac
What's wrong with that? Better than the monthly/yearly subscription model as far as I am concerned.
mrzool··on Learning DNS in 10 Years
whoosh
mrzool··on News Minimalist – Only significant news
Agreed, an RSS feed is the first thing I looked for on the website. Didn't find it, moved on, will probably forget about the website in a couple of hours.

From the footer:

> simply visit newsminimalist.com when you feel like it.

That's exactly what RSS feeds are for, so you can subscribe to a website and get the updates without the need to visit it again or even think about it again.

mrzool··on I don’t want a new phone, but I’m probably buying one
> Starting some apps takes really long, like 10–20 seconds. I think it’s because today’s apps require more RAM than their older versions.

Also SSD wear and tear after years of use can cause a device to become sluggish.

mrzool··on Little Snitch Mini
You just release a new version of the app at full price. Like Silvio Rizzi has been doing with Reeder for 5 major versions since 2010, pretty successfully.
mrzool··on Little Snitch Mini
> turn his company into a very specific type of enterprise software

They would just need to release a pro version of their app you can pay upfront in the App Store, and then release paid updates later following the same model. No need to "turn a company" into anything.

mrzool··on Little Snitch Mini
I have the same exact same issue. Managed Apple IDs are a joke, the only use I have for them is to backup the contacts of my users so that when they get a new device they get their email autocompletion back. Keychain sync is disabled. Using the App Store in any capacity is impossible. There's absolutely no way to use in-app purchases/subscriptions. I got almost laughed at by an Apple rep the other day when I asked if it was somehow possible, as an Apple Business administrator, to purchase extra iCloud storage space for a user.

This is a great article to send to those developers that only use IAP to license the complete version of their apps:
