Don't _ever_ use Hola! It's a scam / malware designed to funnel traffic through your internet connection.
mrmondo··on Show HN: Easily connect to a VPN in a country of your choice
Most people don't understand whys secure and what's not, remember we live in a society where people generally don't know that connecting to a 'free' wireless network without a password means that all your traffic is completely unencrypted.
mrmondo··on Show HN: Easily connect to a VPN in a country of your choice
I couldn't agree more, and in JavaScript to top it off!

Seriously people - don't just randomly connect to VPNs: you're essentially bridging your computer / network to a completely untrusted network that's more than likely to have all manor of people doing nefarious / dangerous things on it - do you really want to put yourself at risk as well as be associated with them?

From memory Microsoft was also the first major company to willingly onboard and work secretly with the NSA to deliver mass surveillance and interception of people's private information, data and metadata internationally without their knowledge or consent as part of the PRISM scandal.

Awesome! Well done that's quite a sprint ;)

MI'm unable try it out today but can't wait to tomorrow perhaps, my personal music collection is sitting around 1.4TB and until recently I had a big wall of 1600 or so records as well as the usual obsessive compulsive hifi hardware everywhere.

I personally ensure that I dedicate at least 8 hours of uninterrupted time each week to music discovery, in reality it often ends up being a lot more than that likely often averaging around 20+ hours a week and is often just commonly limited by how many times I feel / wish to listen to a newly discovered artist or album before I sort of mentally have them etched into my mental catalog of music if that makes any sort of sense.

Music, musical discovery and interrelationships are such deeply rooted, important part of my life that when things come along that actually help that process it can have an immensely profound impact on my energy and happiness, if this tool / toolset ends up helping me I will forever be in your debt and if it doesn't I will try to hold back on logging millions of isssues against it ;)

Neat! I'm usually very cynical of JavaScript based projects but a lot of my life outside of work I spend digging deep into obscure genres from strange small towns around the world, I generally find the best discovery mechanisms are last.fm (yes it's still got a fantastic recommendation engine), what.cd used to lead me to a lot of new artists / albums, digging through various forums and subreddits and pandora's music genome project has been quite useful as well (also they just finally launched their all HTML5 interface because flash.... well it's flash) and I end up posting and sharing music with friends on https://mondotunes.org because everyone knows me as the music digger and geek and asks what I'm listening to all the time, ironically for the sake of ease I generally link to poor quality YouTube clips of songs which is somewhat intentional so that if people enjoy it they might purchase the album or go to a gig etc... I currently subscribe to Pandora, Apple Music (which is improving very, very quickly), Spotify (which I might drop soon) and last.fm because I like to support their work.

Brilliant landing page at present, I must say!
mrmondo··on Ask HN: Is there an open source equivalent to Palantir?
This looks really very interesting! Thank you for the link, I think I might have a few use cases for this if it's easy to work with.

if by people you mean me as the person evaluating the site and looking for information about the production, I'd want to see the source code to give it a once over to see how / where my data was being handled and if it was a sensible choice to recommend to friends or relatives.

No I don't get the source code for all of Facebook, although they do open source a number of projects, they're widely known or at least suspected of misuse of peoples information and / or meta data and because you can't see the source it's a good reason not to use the platform, and I for one no longer do.

Twitter and google are the same story, they open source many projects and services that run and monitor their platforms, those are trustworthy and it shows an investment in society in general, the bits we can't see however are the parts of I am wary of.

I personally would like to export point-in-time state of contacts before / after sync A) in case anything wrong B) for my own personal trending / information over time

Hey congrats on launching your project, regardless of feedback and however it goes you should be proud of the work you and those around you put in, don't forget to reward yourself and reflect on the experience.

---

Feedback, now, it is negative, but please don't take it personally, it's purely intended as an honest, transparent brain dump from when I landed on the page.

1. Rather than telling people something as you see it in the main paragraph - tell them WHY this product is needed in your minds and WHY you made it, I don't think many people are going to read that paragraph to find out why the app exists and why it might be important or valuable to their lives.

2. The front page is very noisey, I didn't know where to look and it felt 'too bright', I don't know why but when I saw the bright baby blue it made me think of either something disposable or something to do with babies / baby care (no idea why!), so the blue makes me think of immaturity for some reason and the yellow makes me think of danger or healthcare for some reason (again, I don't know why healthcare, it's just what came to mind so I thought I'd mention it).

3. Source code - where is it? If it's not open source why? and if it uses some open source components what are they?

4. Privacy / Security information, independent audits or the source code would be useful to instil trust. What data do you store / share / ask for / share with, how and where is it stored and handled (or classified) and why.

5. 'The possibilities are endless' - sounds like lorem ipsum title, from what it looks like the possibilities are actually very limited and that might be fine but saying that this product gives or opens you to endless possibilities, as a side node, I can't see the reason to clutter the page with # tab-like titles that scroll you down just a few lines as the landing page isn't that long, on my desktop for example it's not even 1 full scrollbar from top to bottom.

6. Facebook is dying and quickly, why not integrate with other platforms or do something decentralised / network neutral? When I think of Facebook in 2017, I think of out-of-touch social meetup groups, privacy concerns, a different kind of blue (yes as in the colour), siloed culture and social bubbles. I just don't see it as relevant and I watch as more and more people say similar things every few months.

6. Can you export your 'data' at any time? and if so to what formats / where can I sync it to?

7. Silly, petty thing that doesn't _actually_ matter but your site / app just launched but the page says copyright 2016, I know it's silly but it caught my eye for some reason.

Again, _please_ take this just as constructive criticism, I'm probably not your target audience, I just wanted to give honest feedback and it shouldn't put you off want to improve / change the product, create new products dream of ideas or down right disagree with me - that's all fine and I really hope you keep whatever passion and ambitions you have rolling forward.

About me as some random internet person that saw the site and brain dumped for you: Male, early 30s, works in IT engineering (ops platform delivery in a very devops like culture), I have 330 apps installed on my iPhone 7+, I use macOS on my work desktop and laptop as well as my home desktop, I have a couple of Linux (Fedora) laptops / handhelds and I also have an Oneplus 3 Android phone just for playing with. Location is Melbourne, Australia, Personality is driven leader and enabler, overly outspoken (as you can tell), know what I don't know (which is a lot) and this is now sounding like a dating profile!

Hope that helps in some weird way!

-Sam.

I really wish I could have a bookmarks bar with just favicons showing in safari, it's something that's a key part of my workflow in Firefox and I actually really like safari and other than that and the annoying wide tabs thing which I'd probably get used to if use it more often.

Hey Mojah, I'm trying to contact you to find out about your old mailing list viewer project, I was wondering if the source is available as I'm sick to death of reading through ugly mailing list archives i.e. http://lists.ausnog.net/pipermail/ausnog/

Any chance of getting in contact with me re: this project and if it might be able to implement it for a few other lists / self host it?

Took the words out of my mouth. It's saved me from having to install complex or insecure VMs or additional machines so many times I can't count. I also enjoy using it to bundle applications usable on Linux and MacOS that otherwise were locked in to windows.
mrmondo··on Facebook isn't necessary
I found that Facebook lost all relevance and provided really... nothing to me, my life, my friends or my family around about 3 years ago. I'm not one of those elitist 'I quite facebook' people but, I did and my life did improve, and guess what? It wasn't social media or the distraction that was the problem - it was the medium. Since then my twitter usage has grown like crazy and I absolutely love it, I learn things, I laugh, I ignore some things but over all - I really love the platform.

And they swarmed the issue and found the issue (within the nginx config) very odd-ball one indeed that didn't affect everyone, fantastic troubleshooting by all the Gitlab engineers, excellent communication and top-notch support like I've never experienced from any software vendor before. A+++ would commit again ;)

Another smooth upgrade minus one bug with people on chrome trying to approve and accept merge requests (I've logged ee bug #1575 for this).
mrmondo··on OpenSSH Keys: A Walkthrough
Howdy, just a FYI here - your site doesn't display properly on mobile devices, it's all squashed into a tiny column in the middle of the page and the text wrapping is warped in places, additional if you're using Safari the 'reader view' is not available to clean the page and make it more readable.
mrmondo··on Ask HN: Do you use LinkedIn?
Yes, and although I'd probably land a job in a day from it - I hate it and will likely delete it soon.
mrmondo··on Ask HN: What would make you want to work for a non-profit as an engineer?
Hahaha I most definitely meant communities, thank you for pointing that out! Damn autocorrect...
mrmondo··on Ask HN: What would make you want to work for a non-profit as an engineer?
I'm ops lead at a non-profit. I took _huge_ pay cut when I moved from the private / government sector to NFP space but I'll tell you what - it was worth every dollar. You can't put a price on happiness, freedom and the value of the visibility of the impact to communities and disadvantaged / at risk people from them work you do. Do a good job with a real impact and work with (not for) an organisation that genuinely strives to make an impact and is transparent and you'll earn respect.

mrmondo··on Screwdriver: Yahoo's Continuous Delivery Build System for Dynamic Infrastructure
Please don't be sorry! I'm genuinely surprised that several people experience a different association with the acronym with relation to technology and open sourcing 'things' especially in the HN space. I grew up with CDs, however as I mentioned in another comment I haven't used or had the means to use optical media in over a decade nor do I see optical media present at work or with friends so it's quite interesting to me, I'm not convinced that I'm in some sort of 'bubble' but more that perhaps that it could be something like a generational association. If you don't mind me asking, in the name of science - what age bracket do you fall under? I'm 30 or there abouts and for me I think optical media became something irrelevant or perhaps irreverent in my technical / cultural experiences in around the time of 2006-2008 and continuous delivery / integration became a valuable focus of product delivery and technical engineering at around 2010 and something that I've been experienced since around 2011ish.
mrmondo··on Screwdriver: Yahoo's Continuous Delivery Build System for Dynamic Infrastructure
IMO let's not waste the mods time with this, I feel that 99.9% of the visitors would associate the term CD with continuous dilevery and not compact disc
mrmondo··on Screwdriver: Yahoo's Continuous Delivery Build System for Dynamic Infrastructure
Heh, first thing that sprung to mind was what.tape, I hear it's the new big thing. Seriously though - there's no good reason for anyone to embrace standard cassette tapes, vinyl I understand - not because of any audio quality based arguments which are easily debunked but because the large format tactile experience of the physical and visual experience of the playing a large rotating medium with friends can be quite compelling. </endtangent>
mrmondo··on Screwdriver: Yahoo's Continuous Delivery Build System for Dynamic Infrastructure
I was kind of thinking the same thing, the last time I had a computer or laptop with an optical drive must have been something like 8+ years ago and even then I can't remember using it for years.
mrmondo··on Screwdriver: Yahoo's Continuous Delivery Build System for Dynamic Infrastructure
Honestly - I don't think most people would confuse this unless they're still on dialup

*Edit: sorry, my comment was intended as humour but was actually a bit negative
