mrmondo··on National Broadband Network CEO says Australians don't want super-fast broadband
Here's some pricing: http://ufb.org.nz/pricing-plans/
mrmondo··on National Broadband Network CEO says Australians don't want super-fast broadband
*Update: Just called an old mate still back in Christchurch, he's on 500Mbit fibre but he said that most people he knows are still on around 100Mbit.
mrmondo··on National Broadband Network CEO says Australians don't want super-fast broadband
It was common as anything in Christchurch, most of my friends had between 40 and 500Mbit at home either on fibre (up to 1Gbit to the home at the time back in 2011), VDSL (I think up to 200Mbit if you're close to the exchange back then) or the old Cable network which was 100Mbit.

At my work we had two 1Gbit internet links at our primary site and anywhere from 1Gbit down to 50Mbit~ way out in rural areas and we had between 500Mbit and 10Gbit dark fibre between sites.

I remember moving from New Zealand where I'd had 100-200Mbit/s fibre for several years to Australia in 2012, when I arrived I moved into a brand new apartment in the first suburb to get fibre to the home, turns out it wasn't to all homes... and I was stuck with 2Mbit/s, which is what i had when I started high school in NZ many many years ago. 2017 is here now and I literally spent over an hour today trying to help someone figure out how to get better than her 2.5Mbit/s ADSL to her house which is not at all far from the CBD, turns out there's nothing she can do. Up until recently I was paying for 3x ADSL lines all set to annex-M and peered together using PFSense because all you can get in most of the cities is 100~ year old copper that's falling apart thanks to the hard right governments that are anti-technology and often anti-education from what I can tell. Recently I gave up on my three links and managed to get a point-to-point 5ghz wireless link from a beam off the top of my roof to a large building in line of sight which is better but obviously won't scale well.
mrmondo··on Build a fast deep learning machine for under $1K
Well it's all cheap kit with the exception of the disks, I guess you could just go online and have a look at what those parts cost you in your country etc...
mrmondo··on Microsoft open-sources Graph Engine
I too had this, forcing the site to load also shows a number of page errors too.

*Edit: checking the site on my phone now and it seems to load, pretty poorly designed site though IMO, unbalanced layout but at least it loads now.

My home server has an i7 4790K, 32GB DDR3 and... a GTX 1080 Gamer Edition that's doing... well, bugger all. Why is the graphics card in there you might ask? Well, it was sitting on my desk collecting dust as I wait patiently for a Pascal driver for eGPUs on macOS but Nvidia had delayed these for long enough that I thought I'd chuck it in my home server, it is being used by ffmpeg for x265/HVEC transcoding with Plex media server but I'm really not even touching it's capabilities - not even close when transcoding a 120GB+ 4K 120FPS video and streaming it wirelessly to my TV that's running a Plex client. The server is running CentOS 7 and has 10x 8TB SATA drives in BTRFS RAID 10 for storage, two Intel NVMe 750 series 1.2 TB SSDs for the OS as well as a couple of 2TB Crucial MX300 SATA SSDs that aren't currently in use for much.

So, I have been sitting here wondering how I can make better use of it while it's practically parked in my server while I wait for some Pascal drivers to drop. I'm not so interested in robots / live video processing but it'd be neat if I could leverage its power for something fun or to assist the servers compute performance in some other ways that might be useful or interesting. I was running KVM with PCIe pass through passing the GPU to a guest VM running Steam as a steam streaming box but I got sick of having an OS on the network that I had to worry about Virus's, Malware and annoyingly slow and unreliable updates being installed when you least want it to happen and I got lazy and went back to playing PlayStation when I needed some time out from constructive work / research.

Open to ideas to any software I could tinker with if anyone has any interesting suggestions?

Yeah it has this weird UI lag, it always feels like using a website rather than an app to me, one of the reasons I always go back to sublime text (3) after trying out releases now and then to make sure I'm not being foolish or missing out on something better. I like the idea that it's open source but I really don't like the idea of it being a heavy javascript app, on my slower laptop you really notice it's memory usage after a short while also.

yes that's what I thought the post was about until I saw the domain it came from as well...
mrmondo··on Ask HN: What device do you use to read academic papers with?
I agree on distance but there is a massive difference between an 8" device with 300+ PPI and one that's 224~ PPI, and if I'm getting a slightly larger device I'm going to want it as sharp as possible, it's a bit like having a 27" monitor - they look dreadful at 1080P, and I think they're only just good enough at 2160p which is generally 163 PPI - now you can really see the difference between that and a 27" 5K display at 218 PPI which lots a lot clearer.
mrmondo··on Ask HN: What device do you use to read academic papers with?
$400USD is with 40% off too! and it's really low ppi, not even up to my personal minimum of 350ppi which really makes for decent, clear reading.
mrmondo··on Ask HN: What device do you use to read academic papers with?
I really wish e-ink triton was updated and deployed on a Linux (not android) tablet with a decent resolution and enough RAM to mark up PDFs, render markdown, use standard tools like git for version control and libreoffice with any other tools you wanted to install. Even a cheaper Chinese tablet but with a decent e-ink screen would be really useful but they just don't seem to exist.
mrmondo··on Why Don't We Have a General-Purpose Tree Editor? (2014)
Went to try it out but it requires signing into your twitter account and they get access to:

- Update your profile.

- Post Tweets for you.

That's not cool.

mrmondo··on Why Don't We Have a General-Purpose Tree Editor? (2014)
I use Gephi quite frequently, it's interface leaves a bit to be desired but I've quite often quickly dumped some data into it and come up with some interesting relationships I wouldn't have thought of until it was visualised in Gephi.
mrmondo··on Why aren’t we using SSH for everything? (2015)
While I agree with all the pros of SSH, the only issue for me is that you're spawning a remote shell which if not properly maintained / configure _could_ be a security risk, not because of ssh / key based authentication which are both great - but because you're one layer closer to the underlying OS - again which is fine if it's configured and secured properly but from what I've seen it's becoming more and more prevent for people to deploy servers / instances without truly understanding platform operations to a level where they choose a sensible OS distribution, keep SELinux enabled, run services in cgroups, automate patching etc... etc... and I think that's fine from the devaluing of operational experience and the whole replace one (modern) ops engineer with 5 devs mentality without considering that it may be more efficient to hire people and create roles based on their skill set and passion where they'll thrive best.

Tip: the landing page looks like something that wouldn't inspire me to trust the design or whatever the product is going to deliver. For example it the colour pallet and the use of times new roman (or similar) font makes me think of Geocities back in the early 2000 / late 1990s.
mrmondo··on Ask HN: Question to data visualization tools' users
I'd like something open source that can take say a PostgreSQL database, an Elasticsearch index and some sort of analytics like Newrelic, Phomethus or Kibana and work some magic to give output potentially interedting information that can be easily graphed / represented
mrmondo··on Retina iMac owners can greatly improve graphics performance of many applications
As of 10.12.4 you won't need f.lux as the functionality for night shift is built into macOS.
mrmondo··on My Farewell to Twitter
Honestly - I've been on twitter since the start, in 2015,2016 and now 2017 I find myself enjoying and benefiting from it more each year.

mrmondo··on 'Check Your Backups Work' Day
Indeed, If one day a year is what it takes for you to remember to care about backups, you probably shouldn't be involved with backups. This could happen to anyone from a person losing their home photo collection, to a hospital missing critical data within a patient management system - I know because I've been involved or seen first hand both of these exact scenarios. It's what we learn from our mistakes that defines our future, not the people telling us we made them.
mrmondo··on 'Check Your Backups Work' Day
I could not agree more @soheil, let me also say that Sid aka @sytse is not only a top notch CEO but he's also a hard working, caring individual who truly not only cares about the product but the whole community so, so much.
mrmondo··on The future of iOS is 64-bit only: Apple to stop support of 32-bit apps
So glad this is happening, it'll be a nice forced purge of old outdated apps, also there is no good reason to have a 32bit app in 2017...

It shouldn't, the default is to keep 6 recent kernel packages.

mrmondo··on Ubuntu 16.04: “Out of memory” errors after upgrade to 4.4.0-59
I use FPM all the time, but it is not a 'nice' way to package things, it's an 'easy' way to package things ;)
mrmondo··on GitLab Database Incident – Live Report
Note for the person that downvoted my comment: GitLab are fantastic, I'm a big advocate for their product & support. My comment to Sid was in support of helping based on some of the notes I saw in their very transparent report, Sid & I have talked several times in the past & I have quite a bit of PostgreSQL experience - so my comment was a positive one offering support when / if needed, not a negative / piss take if it came off as such.
