mrmondo··on Disney acquires own streaming facilities, will pull Netflix content
Howdy, I have been running both macOS and iOS betas on my personal devices and both iTunes and Music have had a significant UX overhaul on macOS 10.13 and iOS 11, they’re not perfect - but it’s a good step forward.

A bit high level but here’s my list of pros:

- I’ve found a lot less missing tracks / albums, especially for more underground / lesser known artists I had real problems with this on Spotify.

- Significantly less bandwidth usage compared to Spotify.

- Unified interface to my music library (1.2TB~) and streaming / downloadable music on both the desktop and phone.

- The ability to have my own music uploaded as part of my library and available on all desktops/laptops and my phone.

- Apple Music data is unmetered on my mobile provider (I average around 8GB/mo of mobile music streaming on my phone)

- The Music app on my phone is /really/ good at figuring out what music/playlists/albums to sync (prefetch if you will) onto my phone, I set the data limit (to 128GB) and it just figures it out nicely, often when I go to listen to a new album from an artist I follow / like - its already there for me (note: I believe this is opt-in functionality)

What I don’t like about Apple Music / think needs to improve:

- Playlists, They’re not as nice or as fast to manage as on Spotify but at least tracks don’t go missing randomly.

- Artist/Album workflow performance, at times it still feels very ‘webframe’ (if that makes sense?) when browsing artists and their albums, the UI latency really annoys me and I liken it to the feeling that JavaScript ‘apps’ give you.

mrmondo··on Disney acquires own streaming facilities, will pull Netflix content
This and I want as much content as possible in 4K/HDR, I’m really sick of the second tier streaming services being limited to highly compressed 1080p.

If a service came along that truly had the TV and films I wanted with a preference for 4K content, I’d happily pay $40-$60AUD a month for it.

Right now I subscribe to:

  - Netflix
  - Stan
  - Apple Music
  - Usenet related services
  - Audible
  - Plex Premium
  - Getflix content unblocking services
And in recent times:

  - Pandora (cancelled as they’re leaving Aus)
  - Amazon Prime video (cancelled as they have hardly any content and a terrible interface)
  - Spotify (cancelled as I prefer Apple Music)
  - Last.FM streaming (cancelled when the service went EOL)
  - Several private trackers (avoid BT now)
There’s a lot of opportunity for consolidation there, I realise I’m probably not in the majority but I WANT to pay and I WANT media creators and artists to take my money.
mrmondo··on A checklist of marketing ideas for side projects
Yes this would put me off immediately.
mrmondo··on Stagit – A static Git page generator
Yeah then it becomes even more interesting to me ;) especially when it comes to NUMA etc...
mrmondo··on Stagit – A static Git page generator
Do you think it’s possible to calculate the relationship between the depth of the git data and the number of I/O operations?

This is purely out of interest, our storage performs at around 2-4M random 4K read IOP/s per node and I was wondering (just for fun) how it might look thrown a good I/O crunch task like this.

mrmondo··on AMD Ryzen 3 1300X and Ryzen 3 1200 CPU Review
While I absolutely agree and want to see much more competition - I believe we /need/ to see ECC across the board and of course lack of an integrated GPU seems like it renders the most common deployments of this range of CPU less attractive.
mrmondo··on Samsung ends Intel's 2-decade-plus reign in microchips
I care about this, my colleagues care about this.
mrmondo··on AWS is having widespread issues
If there's "elevated packet loss" to/from EBS, which is your disk - does that mean that people had to rebuild or redeploy instances using EBS storage?
mrmondo··on Ask HN: What are the 5 websites you visit almost daily?

  - My RSS feeds (I use feedly for this)
  - HN
  - Twitter
  - Fastmail
  - GitLab
mrmondo··on Show HN: Chromeless – Headless Chrome Automation on AWS Lambda
Indeed, so many of AWS’s IP ranges are used for DDoS and malicious behaviour they end up getting blacklisted due to their poor reputation. It’s a bit like using one third party resellers shared IP ranges in your mail relay - you’re asking to end up on reputation based lists. There’s a lot to be said for your IP reputation on the internet and when you outsource that - you outsource your freedom to maintain your reputation risk.

Likely privacy, cost and performance.

That’s fantastic and no JavaScript! Thank you so much for your time / effort on this!

mrmondo··on Myspace lets you hijack any account just by knowing the person’s birthday
It’s another Murdoch ‘asset’ I believe.
mrmondo··on Ask HN: Does success in work bring you happiness?
I've spent a /lot/ of time working through this and for me - Yes, 'Wins' at work directly correlate to my overall happiness both at work and home. I even graph my happiness at least 3 times a day and if its above or below average I try to tag it with something like #workproblems or #workwin
mrmondo··on Show HN: Eul – a lightweight desktop client for Skype, Slack, Gmail, and more
Hey - I wanted to give you a BIG thank you for creating a native / non-JavaScript client for this, JavaScript (no matter the framework) has been the death of me and my peers with regards to desktop ‘apps’ for the last few years and it’s so damn good to see someone stop, think and give a $#!+ about performance. I’ll add that the last thing I (and I’ve heard my team say the same) want is another app that has to run in a web browser.

When I get to work tomorrow I’ll be trying this out (knowing it’s in beta) for XMPP / Jabber, if it doesn’t already support OTR encryption - that’d be a killer feature. A big problem I see is that a lot of places want to or do run internal XMPP/Jabber because they have engineers working that don’t want to / can’t run ‘enterprise’ rubbish like Skype or those of us that are sick of JavaScript heavy SaaS apps like slack - but then you’ll have a few managers or project managers that still run Windows likely for excel or out of habit etc... and they have to use Pidgin - which while it works across a lot of IM systems - is very awkward and ugly as anything, so it gives the better protocols a bad name, on Mac there’s Adium which is a pretty decent multi-IM client but has stagnated somewhat. So a clean, easy to use, stable and well performing chat client that supports XMPP/Jabber with MUC and OTR would be an absolute killer.

mrmondo··on Radiohead album hides an app that only runs on an '80s computer
Oh that’s a good point you have there and app is just an abbreviation of Application which I think philosophically was a subset of Programs / Programmes.
mrmondo··on Radiohead album hides an app that only runs on an '80s computer
Hahaha yeah, I’m a kiwi living in Melbourne and at first before Apple had added New Zealand to Siri’s input localisation I had it set to Australian and it’d get everything wrong, I found that instead setting it to British English it worked a lot better and then better again when New Zealand was added, regardless I keep Siri’s voice set to British Female as it sounds the most natural to me.

For those that aren’t familiar with Australian vs New Zealand ascents - they’re /very/ different despite how close the countries are physically located to each other. When spoken New Zealand English has more of a British / South African - ‘rounder’ sound, where Australian is generally (especially as you move north or west up the country) more nasal and closer to American English with more emphasis on E rather than O if that makes sense.

I’m still left wondering how this is not even near the top of HN even this long after it’s posted time...
mrmondo··on Symantec explores selling web certificates business
Very good point, in your eyes does that suggest inevitable liquidation / similar or something more like running the company at a loss as a write off and on the chance something might come from it as a spin off?
mrmondo··on Symantec explores selling web certificates business
Being one of the least trusted, yet large CAs currently in existence this may not be a bad move for the company. However I do wonder what that leaves the company as far as popular assets go, their ‘enterprise’ antivirus offering was once the best-in-class but since the demise of AV and the companies general reputation declining year on year (citation definitely needed and obviously my opinion through observation) it still makes me wonder how long the company will last. Oh and of course I should remind people that Symantec owns Blue Coat...
mrmondo··on Life Is About to Get Harder for Websites Without HTTPS
If you can’t control your clients - maybe use a captive portal style landing page with a link to install the local certificate or something along those lines, it’s also useful to have a wireless network (SSID/VLAN) for BYOD that just has internet access and as such doesn’t need the very and one that has access to internal services that does.
mrmondo··on Fedora Loves Python
Personally I can't stand when I have to get language specific packages from one of their many package managers, that's the point of having a distribution - so it can be distributed.
mrmondo··on OpenBSD and the modern laptop
Yes likewise, I’d be annoyed if AC1300 / 80Mhz didn’t work so lack of 40Mhz is a big no no for me.
mrmondo··on Ask HN: What are some of the better Hacker News apps?
Yeah I've stuck with it for years now and while trying others every so often as it has bugs with voting and editing your own posts I think it's still the best by far.
mrmondo··on I'm a creep. I'm sorry
I think there's been a misunderstanding, I was making comments about general workplaces - not about the situation in the article.
mrmondo··on I'm a creep. I'm sorry
Yes, that's part of my point - that's why it's called /asking/, a world where people are not free to ask - I can only imagine would result in a world where people take, and that - I think we've all whitnessed at times.
mrmondo··on I'm a creep. I'm sorry
Exactly my feelings, I wouldn't hire someone into my team that I didn't think couldn't become my friend should the situation play out as such, it just seems logical to me.
mrmondo··on I'm a creep. I'm sorry
Nature and humanity right? We're all humans, I find it fascinating but also infuriating how often people forget that most people just want to be happy and if they find love with those near them then I'm happy for them, far be it from profiteering companies etc... to tell people not to make connections with others.
