mrmetanoia··on CrowdStrike broke Debian and Rocky Linux months ago
The things I build because I'm paid to, in ways I disagree with because MBAs have the final say, are terrible compared to my hobby and passion projects. I don't imagine I'm entirely alone. I hope there's always communities out there building because they want useful things and tools for doing useful things that they control.
mrmetanoia··on CrowdStrike broke Debian and Rocky Linux months ago
in this case would a programmer with a day job that also hacks on linux in their free time be a professional at work and an amateur on anything they do independently? Or really any sort of engineer, contractor, person who makes stuff, etc?
mrmetanoia··on A search engine by and for the federal government
Yeah it's cool. Lately just feels like they're doing work, not all home runs, but they're out there swinging.
mrmetanoia··on CrowdStrike Update: Windows Bluescreen and Boot Loops
so much seems based on sentiment now, might not matter as much as it would have 15 years ago.
mrmetanoia··on He secretly changed this freeway sign, helped millions of drivers [video]
Don't the bouncers usually have the clipboards? And wouldn't they be aware of other people of clipboard status by face/name? seeing a rogue clipboard might prompt questions and credential requests. Clipboards on strangers make me curious, ladders make me glad someone else called to have whatever it is fixed.
mrmetanoia··on Zuckerberg and Peter Thiel on Facebook, Millenials, and Predictions for 2030
Yeah two monsters that got as rich as they are nasty, let's all pull up a chair and listen.
mrmetanoia··on Teaching general problem-solving skills is not a substitute for teaching math [pdf] (2010)
It makes no sense because it indeed makes no sense. People who successfully solve realworld problems understand concepts and ideas and how to apply them, they understand how to iterate and extrapolate.

I've met too many people who can do a specific thing but actually have no idea what's going on for the GP's logic to hold any water at all.

mrmetanoia··on Aboriginal ritual passed down over 12,000 years, cave find shows
yes, many cultures had/have oral traditions that include poetics. The Finnish "Kalevala," is another epic written down from an oral poem/song.
mrmetanoia··on Proton launches its own version of Google Docs
Agreed, happy paying customer but would rather see them investing in improving Drive. Seems like they're trying to get more enterprise-y which sucks.
mrmetanoia··on US family sues NASA for $80k in damages after space debris hits home
It feels like a reasonable amount, which somehow struck me as funny/unexpected in our time.
mrmetanoia··on Gilead shot prevents all HIV cases in trial
One of my in-laws is a full on Fox news nut, but has a rare condition that he received treatments for as part of an NIH study that did him a world of good and Fauci was one of the doctors that worked on it, as a result the bits of nuttery he didn't buy into were attempts to discredit Fauci or anti-vax stuff. Oddly it didn't pull into question any other beliefs he picked up from that station.
mrmetanoia··on Mouth-based touchpad enables people living with paralysis to use computers
I just want this for extra control options in gaming. I bet I could get good at aiming with my tongue. Shorter distance brain to tongue than brain to hands too? Faster response time? Tongue control is going to dominate in esports ;) RGB mouth guards incoming.
mrmetanoia··on Anonymous Source Shared Leaked Google Search API Documents
Forgive my language but I'd expect people here to understand that's horeshit, they absolutely have enough data and patterning to de-anonymize the data. They spent time making it look anonymous.
mrmetanoia··on Tesla Quietly Removes All U.S. Job Postings
Seems like an abusive mind game.
mrmetanoia··on Tech firms must tame toxic algorithms to protect children online
Yes, and stop using screens as a pacifier. People don't like to be told how to parent, but I'd settle for them just parenting. Shoving shit in your kids hand to shut them up isn't parenting.

I used to blame the shitty influencers and internet at large for the selfish greedy brats, but it's their parents. I've met too many exceptions where the difference was just "We limit their screen time." Maybe they end up shitty in some other way, I dunno, but at least they're going to be more functional than my nephews who my SIL is constantly trying to figure our how they get sucked into racism and greed and what to do about it. Stop letting them get all their views from greedy racists online would be a start - can't do that, she'd "never have a moments peace." Idiot human.

Side note, if you let your kids play roblox unsupervised, you're fucking up hard.

mrmetanoia··on Coding interviews are stupid (ish)
I dropped out of school (English literature) because I needed to make money and pay bills due to a life change, and i applied at a place that does internet stuff to do tech support because computers were a big part of my hobbies. I moved up over the years learning as I went and now I've occupied a few 'engineering' roles. I used to feel somewhat embarrassed to hold an engineering role with no engineering degree.

But I stopped worrying the more I worked with software engineers. They were just people, some sucked, some were great, their education almost never had anything to do with the bracket they fell into. The worst one I've ever met has a PhD. The best one I've met also has a PhD.

Then I found more people in these positions that have degrees or no degrees, and the people that work well both with degrees and without had something in common. They can more or less be taught to do anything, they can extrapolate and apply knowledge outside of the specific example initially given, and they understand the big picture/desired end results. I hate to say it so crass, but they are good at identifying the trivial bullshit and addressing it or cutting through it rather than sitting in it. They "Get it." From the ideal to what the business demands, they just get it.

Training competent people is a boon. I don't know how you seek out interested/curious competency and then train it, but if we can figure that out, it'd be cool. I'm really tired of working with people who have degrees and jobs because their mothers told them it pays well. Computer Scientists with no interest or curiosity about computers.

mrmetanoia··on Proton Mail discloses user data leading to arrest in Spain
Proton Mail is pretty good email. I use it since I decided to de-google as much as possible. That said, I don't consider it truly 'private.' Weird key handling in order to make pgp 'easy,' just email being what it is, and courts and governments being what they are.

I'll continue to use it despite some hyperbole on the site, but as long as my mail isn't being fed to an advertising engine it's a step up.

I hope Princess has some mad computer skills.

mrmetanoia··on Meta Horizon OS
This seems kind of interesting to me, it's a shame it's from Meta so I'll likely never touch it because of the toxicity of their core products, but I'm glad to see this, as it seems like it could stimulate some competition.
mrmetanoia··on The forgotten war on beepers
I couldn't believe this worked when one of my friends did it! Felt like such an easy cheat lol

My parents likely wouldn't have approved but this payphone conundrum was what lead to me and my friends attempt to build a red box, which never worked well for us but we learned a lot in the attempt!

mrmetanoia··on The forgotten war on beepers
It wasn't until the two-ways that I even kind of wanted one. I remember being at the mall with a group of kids and one of the girls got paged by her mom and we had to go around to find a pay phone for her to check in and I recall thinking 'well that's stupid, I just check in when I get somewhere and when I leave, she's just carrying an annoying reminder to go find a payphone'

Once kids started sending little messages with them, I wanted one. Then they had fun colors and transparent cases. Luckily my nokia brick phone was just a few years away, half a life-time then, but just a few years in hindsight. ;)

None of my friends at that time were drug dealers, but they liked to joke they were because of the stigma.

mrmetanoia··on Scammers are targeting teenage boys on social media and driving some to suicide
Yes, absolutely morally. Respecting this process is part of maintaining important boundaries for everyone.
mrmetanoia··on Embezzlers Are Nice People (2017)
That's heavy, as it can be true even without crime or hurting others.
mrmetanoia··on What will humans do if technology solves everything?
Humans are spectacular at creating their own systems for abusing and depriving themselves. No doubt we'll still be judging and killing each other for something or other. We might even have more time to decide on things we simply cannot stand the idea of someone else doing or being.
mrmetanoia··on What will humans do if technology solves everything?
aaaah fuck I was hoping it was just where I work that this was the loop.
mrmetanoia··on I Lost Faith in Kagi
Kagi just works for me. I pay a monthly bill and I get a good search engine. Until they do something that disrupts that relationship or signals a disruption to that relationship, the things in this post don't strike me as that, I don't have much patience for posts like these. It's like a child making a "dead game" post for a game that made a change they didn't like.
