mrintegrity··on DraftKings Is Using AI to Behaviorally Target Chronic Gamblers
I worked in a large and well known online casino as a technical account manager. I promise you, for all the "responsible gaming" stuff they have written everywhere, if a big account decides to stop playing (let's say they just want a break from gambling), their personal am will be arranging free trips and vip treatment to keep them on the tables. I have seen it happen and it disgusted me. I no longer work for such companies
mrintegrity··on EU to crack down on TikTok, Instagram's 'addictive design' targeting kids
My girlfriend's mother is visiting, 60 years old and constantly looking at instagram. I was sharing my data plan so she could use her phone outside the house but started lying that my plan had run out. Gives "parental controls" a whole new meaning!

mrintegrity··on Meta and YouTube found negligent in landmark social media addiction case
How does that work when nicotine products that are every bit as addictive as tobacco exist, maybe you're just not aware of them? Sitting here with non tobacco snus (Swedish nicotine pouch) under my top lip, something I have been utterly unable to quit. I believe "nicotine free" tobacco would be completely non addictive.
mrintegrity··on Global warming has accelerated significantly
As you are probably aware, the op didn't say that it was
mrintegrity··on Fentanyl makeover: Core structural redesign could lead to safer pain medications
I think you are both talking about slightly different things:

* Herniated disk in the spine * A "hernia": is the abnormal exit of tissue or an organ, such as the bowel, through the wall of the cavity in which it normally resides.[

mrintegrity··on Ai, Japanese chimpanzee who counted and painted dies at 49
Thanks, they seem like more than just random splashes of color.. possibly I'm anthropomorphising but it feels like it was straining to draw something specific like a young child would.
mrintegrity··on Ai, Japanese chimpanzee who counted and painted dies at 49
Would love to see some of his paintings, let me just google "AI chimp painting" .. oh..
mrintegrity··on I replaced Windows with Linux and everything's going great
I configured gnome to look like win 95/98, tried to use it for a while but the novelty wore off quite fast. Weirdly the mouse pointer still looks like win95 randomly in certain applications, guess I didn't clean up thoroughly!
mrintegrity··on Rob Pike goes nuclear over GenAI
No RMS? A shocking omission, I doubt that he would appreciate it any more than Rob Pike however
mrintegrity··on Divine D native Linux open-source mobile system – Rev. 1.1 Hardware Architecture
First time hearing about this, couldn't find any info about who is behind this or if it's a real project with a chance of success. I hope it is, carrying around an incredibly powerful computer in my pocket but not allowed to use it the way I want because google/apple says no sucks, we need this.
mrintegrity··on Cloudflare Global Network experiencing issues
It would have been ironic had this https://www.thewebsiteisdown.com/salesguy.html been hosted behind cloudflare.
mrintegrity··on Cloudflare Global Network experiencing issues
Now is as good a time as ever to look at moving our eggs into some other baskets
mrintegrity··on Cloudflare Global Network experiencing issues
It's insane to me that big internet uptime monitoring tools like Pingdom and Downdetector both seem to rely on Cloudflare, as both of those are currently unavailable as well.
mrintegrity··on Unofficial Microsoft Teams client for Linux
You can also try this user script which I am using in Firefox https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/552472-allow-pip-in-teams-...

It works great

mrintegrity··on ChatControl update: blocking minority held but Denmark is moving forward anyway
Because it's not popular, and they are a populist party. I'd wager they will be all for it if they were to achieve power.
mrintegrity··on Pixel 10 Phones
I guess that's better than nothing! Still, it wouldn't allow connection to a thunderbolt dock with 2 displays, network and peripherals I guess.

Ideally it would run stock Linux with Android apps via waydroid.. reliance on banking apps makes this fully converged experience using only open source a bit of a pipe dream :(

mrintegrity··on Pixel 10 Phones
My dream is to have a phone like this that supports thunderbolt host mode, runs grapheneos or similar and can drive a couple of displays via usb-c docking station. With the memory and CPU this phone could easily replace my work laptop (vscode and ssh for the most part). Sadly I haven't found any phone that would make this possible (Samsung Dex doesn't count because it's proprietary)
mrintegrity··on Did California's fast food minimum wage reduce employment?
Sweden does not have a minimum wage but does have strong unions which negotiate wages on behalf of workers.

Norway has minimum wage for some sectors (including unskilled labor), these minimums are also due to strong unions and collective agreements which have become law.

Denmark, no minimum wage but strong unions and collective agreements.

Finland has no legal minimum wage but also collective bargaining mandates minimum salaries.

All of these countries have strong social security nets.

mrintegrity··on A novel nematode species from the Siberian permafrost
Newly discovered nematode individuals have been reanimated from Siberian permafrost after remaining in cryptobiosis. Preliminary analysis indicates that these nematodes belong to the genera Panagrolaimus and Plectus. Radiocarbon dating indicates that the Panagrolaimus individuals have remained in cryptobiosis since the late Pleistocene (~46,000 years)
mrintegrity··on Fuck dopamine, we're voluntarily breaking our own brains
I wrote a "funny" email to a colleague who asked for a formal request to do a task I asked him for. I took it seriously and wrote extremely formal ("Dearest Steven... " Etc). He laughed and said "did chatgpt write that?".

It made me irrationally angry, no, I spent two minutes of my own brain power to come up with those five sentences. This kind of thing happens constantly now, everyone assumes everyone else uses gpt's for everything and I find it a bit depressing to be honest.

mrintegrity··on Who's this dick bschmidt711 that's spamming HN?
Let's see, childish, kinda sad, certainly lonely. Elon Musk is my guess
mrintegrity··on Microsoft is killing Skype
Discord missed an opportunity to become the video calling and chat king, the smoothness of joining and leaving a group video chat when you please and the high quality video, audio and app support was exactly the kind of "just like being in the office but virtual" experience that teams, skype, slack, zoom, meet, etc lack. During peak covid it was a godsend having calls with friends and playing games together.

My dream service would be very like discord but with scheduled meeting support and completely open source and self hostable.

mrintegrity··on Laser mapping reveals oldest Amazonian cities, built 2500 years ago (2024)
you mean "large" relative to human populations or large relative to the entire Amazon rain forest? Your sources indicate that there was cultivation widespread around the amazon but not that the /entire/ amazon is as it is due to cultivation. Maybe i misinterpret the intended message of your comment.
mrintegrity··on Fermat's Last Theorem – how it’s going
> The crowd went wild

I am curious what a group of number theorists "going wild" looks like.. were they throwing chairs or are we talking slightly raised eyebrows?

mrintegrity··on Top internet sleuths say they won't help find the UnitedHealthcare CEO killer
This reminds me of Ken McElroy [1], murdered in broad daylight with ~40 people present yet no witnesses.

Did this CEO deserve to be shot in the back? No, and vigilantism shouldn't be celebrated. Instead we should invest time in understanding why our laws and society structure allows (even promotes) the kind of corporate exploitation of the public that is enough to drive someone to murder.

mrintegrity··on I Followed the Official AWS Amplify Guide and Was Charged $1,100
>Instead they have some pencil pushers calculating that they can milk thousands here and there from "user mistakes" that can't be easily disputed

User mistakes of this type must be a drop in the bucket for AWS and in my experience they seem more keen to avoid such issues that can cost more in damaged reputation.

AWS is not cheap, and in some cases it's incredibly expensive (egress fees), but tricking their customers into accidentally spending a couple of hundred extra is not part of their playbook.

mrintegrity··on Surveillance Watch – the hidden connections within the surveillance industry
Firefox on Android mobile works! With unlock origin also which is nice
mrintegrity··on PostmarketOS updates: new homepage, pmbootstrap v3, sensors, libcamera
Postmarketos is great, far from perfect but making calls and sending sms worked well for me on an op6. My dream is thunderbolt support so I can dock and just use a phone instead of laptop, not sure if any postmarketos phone supports that yet though
