mrintegrity··on CrowdStrike Update: Windows Bluescreen and Boot Loops
Many years ago an Ubuntu tech sales guy demoed their (openstack?) Self hosted cloud offering, his laptop was running windows..
mrintegrity··on The Delusion of the Polygraph
>Old adages sometimes stick around forever though- especially when there is money to be made in keeping them alive.

Don't forget to make your swap space double the size of your ram!

mrintegrity··on The Limited Value of Multivitamin Supplements
>If you really care about this then find and do a simple general blood test for your micros/vitamins. It will show you where you are deficient and can focus on supplementing on only those.

Presumably this will only show what you are deficient in based on the previous few days diet, right? So to have a decent measurement you should already have a very stable diet. If you eat like I do, random things from day to day, then your vitamin levels should differ from week to week, or are they much longer lasting?

mrintegrity··on Mozilla.ai did what? When silliness goes dangerous
It seems clear that the author has an axe to grind, conflating the blog post and "Mozilla corporate policy" kinda gives away the bias
mrintegrity··on How I Made Google's "Web" View My Default Search
It won't be long before google removes or butchers this feature. Like the feature that used to exist where you could easily block domains from being returned in a search, I guess it was too popular, as this "web" view likely will be too
mrintegrity··on Debian on xz-utils: revert to version that does not contain changes by bad actor
In other discussions the Chinese person in question has been spoken about at length
mrintegrity··on Teler: Real-Time HTTP Intrusion Detection
Seems like the "refactor" to a completely new project also includes new license restrictions with Elastic license for the core application. Can't say I blame them and at least it's not the damn BSL, but I still don't like it very much.
mrintegrity··on TrenchBroom: A cross platform level editor for Quake-engine based games
It's many years since I dabbled with quake based game level design (rtcw, sof2) and back then I used Worldcraft (now Hammer). From the video, it looks like Trenchbroom is a fair bit more simplistic, what is the benefit of this over Hammer?
mrintegrity··on Earth just experienced its hottest 12 months in recorded history
Those rapid temperature swings were related to / resulted in mass extinctions and had various natural causes. The current rapid temperature swing is caused by human activity as is well accepted by any scientist who isn't a crackpot.
mrintegrity··on Coffee machine camera at Amazon warehouse raises concerns about surveillance
Maybe in the UK or US, not in the parts of the EU where I have lived, in Sweden there would probably be some serious discomfort if an employer put up cameras to record office workers
mrintegrity··on Amelia Didn't Know Radio (1993)
Would love to read some sources for what you say, most info I have read about her don't say anything about her supposed incompetence.
mrintegrity··on Apple announces changes to iOS, Safari, and the App Store in the European Union
Possibly stupid question, but if I install an "alternative app store", approved by Apple, can i not just use that store to install yet another app store (assuming there would be one) that isn't approved by apple and doesn't care about their restrictions (and doesn't pay apple anything?)
mrintegrity··on Culture Change at Google
I was at a big conference in Dublin years ago where a Google talking head stated to hundreds of people that "google only hires the most intelligent people" with a grotesquely smug look on her face, instantly turned me off from ever considering applying to work there. Incidentally RMS was also there and screamed from the back "WHICH BSD LICENSE?" when the Google drone said google uses "the bsd license", which I thought was hilarious.
mrintegrity··on The failure of self-checkout technology
Not triggered at all, had you mentioned wheelchair access from the start I might have agreed that it could be better (not that I have any personal experience). I will be sure to observe these things from now on. No need to get snarky friend :)
mrintegrity··on The failure of self-checkout technology
>Another thing I really hate is that I've seen locked exit barriers that open when scanning the receipt. In sweden there is a real disregard for workplace safety :(

Here in Sweden you can just push those out of the way (it sets of an alarm but if you push it back to closed position the alarm stops). FYI Sweden has strict workplace safety rules, not sure why you think there is a real disregard for this.

mrintegrity··on We switched to Java 21 virtual threads and got a deadlock in TPC-C for Postgres
Totally off topic but I am getting tired of the AI generated images used on nearly all blog posts nowadays. They are instantly recognisable, it just seems low effort and lowers the feeling of quality one might otherwise have
mrintegrity··on DARPA Moves Forward on X-65: Plane with no moving control surfaces
Your aviation example is not good, that reddit thread is rife with memes and "in jokes", very little informed discussion that I can see.
mrintegrity··on Linux 6.8 Network Optimizations Can Boost TCP Performance by ~40%
Is it likely there would be significant performance improvements on AWS graviton based instances?
mrintegrity··on New study shows Small Magellanic Cloud is two smaller galaxies
All houses are built nowadays, people abuse that word too much. How do you get a house without building it? yeah exactly
mrintegrity··on TikTok is making users give their iPhone passwords for unclear reasons
Is there a better source for this? Nypost is one of the worst scandal generating clickbait sites out there
mrintegrity··on FFmpeg lands CLI multi-threading as its "most complex refactoring" in decades
Parent post is getting down voted to oblivion but it seems a reasonable belief for someone who is not highly engaged with AI. I have only the vaguest understanding of how it works (and it's probably wrong) and to my layman mind it also seems like a totally fair assumption, based on experience as a user and the constant flood of news. Please explain why the suggestion that a future AI / sufficiently advanced LLM could refactor a complex codebase is so preposterous.
mrintegrity··on I Hate MFA
I use Aegis authenticator on my phone which supports export, I import them into gnome authenticator from where it is incredibly fast and easy to get the code into a web application login:

* Press "windows" key * Type the first letter or couple of letters of the name of the code, press enter to copy (which also closes the expose style view and returns to the previous application) * Paste

Very smooth, with this setup I have no issue using 2fa with codes.

Not sure if it can be simplified to this extent on other operating systems / window managers

mrintegrity··on Why does Gnome fingerprint unlock not unlock the keyring?
I was wondering that myself, and just this moment tested it. Interestingly, I pressed cancel on the keyring dialog instead of entering a password.. everything seems to work fine!? I can view saved passwords for wifi networks in gnome network manager, firefox passwords can be viewed in it's manager too. So what exactly does this system protect?

It seems I have either misunderstood it's functionality or it's completely broken. Is it literally only protecting the "login keyring", in which case what is the point when I can still login and seemingly do everything anyway?

In the gui "seahorse" I can view all openssh and gpg keys without having unlocked the login keyring.. very confused by this!

mrintegrity··on Making games in Go for absolute beginners
This is great, the dificulty goes up rapidly. I only got to level 3 before quickly dying (playing on mobile Firefox)
mrintegrity··on Trying to make sense of why Otis exploded en route to Acapulco
I also noticed that but have assumed it's because of a change in reporting methods. It's hard to find a forecast that includes the confidence level of a prediction. The bbc weather forecast used to show the % chance of rain for example. Now most apps and websites just show a grey cloud.
mrintegrity··on Croc: Easily and securely send things from one computer to another
Perhaps you missed this https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37608110 but it has given me fresh, sceptical, eyes with which to read cve reports.
mrintegrity··on Linux gives up on 6-year LTS kernels, says they’re too much work
How? It's open source and Free Software, literally guaranteing the right to "repair" your code. Maybe I don't understand your question but it seems totally unrelated to the concept of an open source support cycle
mrintegrity··on I built Excel for Uber and they ditched it
I get a strangely dystopian feeling from this article, like it's almost about a character in a black mirror episode
mrintegrity··on Sweden Sans
There are quite a few grammatical errors on that page which is surprising, as much because of the sites subject as the fact that Swedes excel at English
mrintegrity··on Light sensor achieves “magically” high efficiency of 200%
Could this be another step towards Star Trek style tricorders?
