mrgaro··on How we migrated onto K8s in less than 12 months
ECS+Fargate does give you zero maintenance, both in theory and in practise. As someone, who runs k8s at home and manages two clusters at work, I still do recommend our teams to use ECS+Fargate+ALB if they satisfy their requirements for stateless apps and they all love it because it is literaly zero maintenance, unlike you just described what k8s requires.

Sure there are a lot of great feature with k8s which ECS cannot do, but when ECS does satisfy the requirements, it will require less maintenance, no matter what kind of k8s you compare it against to.

Kubernetes needs regular updates, just as everything else (unless you carefully freeze your environment and somehow manage the vulnerability risks) and that requires manual work.

ECS+Fargate however does not. If you are a small team managing the entire stack, you need to factor this into accounts. For example EKS forces you to upgrade the cluster to keep in the main kubernetes release cycle, albeit you can delay it somewhat.

I personally run k8s at home and another two at work and I recommend our teams to use ECS+Fargate+ALB if it is enough for them.

mrgaro··on Remembering the First 'Cold-Storage Banquet'
A major factor was inventing a way to keep grass fresh through the year, actually a Nobel worth invention: the AIV solution, named after its inventor.

Thanks Master Ken for doing these awesome posts and participating in the Marc's youtube channel! Both amazing content!
mrgaro··on Booting Linux off of Google Drive
I remember the glorious AIX machines we had which could book from tape backups made with a simple "mksysbk" command. :)
mrgaro··on Language is primarily a tool for communication rather than thought [pdf]
Oh I absolutely agree that our minds are extending our memories and fabricating rest and it's next to impossible to difference what was real.

But getting back to my cinematic memories: I remember the places I've visited (and imagine places which I haven't) and then my mind constructs the cinematics. Fascinating!

mrgaro··on Language is primarily a tool for communication rather than thought [pdf]
Does anybody else often visualie memories as they would watch them via a movie camera? I do. I can see myself walking in places with a cinematic camera movements and angles. Haven't heard much others having the same.
mrgaro··on AeroSpace is an i3-like tiling window manager for macOS
I'm a long time Amethyst user, but going to try AeroSpace out!

Based on the documentation the toml syntax is stretched quite a bit to implement some logic and callbacks. Have you considered some scripting language to make it easier to do, or is the need for this kind of advanced use so little that it's not really a problem?

mrgaro··on Tmux is worse-is-better
What's wrong with that? Computing history has a lot of machines with various co-processors which are used to offload various things from main CPU. Just as an example: Amiga and C64 had both co-processors for rendering text faster.
mrgaro··on The Myth of Loss: Bitboys
Very weird take to call Future Crew a "research group" and Second Reality a "graphics technology". Future Crew was a PC Demo group (in Demo Scene) and Second Reality an excellent and ground breaking demo. There wasn't any magic technology in it, but instead some very clever effects from the members, bound together into an artistic demo.

I cannot comment anything about the facts what came after with Bitboys, but the author doesn't seem to know the history and details on their demo scene origins.

mrgaro··on Ur Quan Masters sequel Free Stars: Children of Infinity, by original devs
I remember playing a game called Star Control 3 ages ago. What happened? Was there multiple attempts of making SC3?
mrgaro··on Loading a trillion rows of weather data into TimescaleDB
Definitively agree here. Once the data is in BigQuery, people will start doing ad-hoc queries and building Grafana dashboards on top of it.

And sooner or later (usually sooner) somebody will build a fancy Grafana dashboard and set it to refresh every 5 second and you will not notice it until it's too late.

mrgaro··on Some colleges will soon charge $100k a year – how did this happen?
Pretty much every company who does not list prices publicly in their website does this. If the vendor recognizes your company name, the price will be bigger :(
mrgaro··on NPM Install Everything, and the Complete and Utter Chaos That Follows
Great work! Package management and supply chain issues are definitely something which have by no means been solved. I appreciate that you did your experiment as it pushes the community forward to think solutions to these problems.

I think you should still build some kind of script to install every available package and then do some interesting analysis from the result. For example I'm sure there are supply chain troijan horses awaiting to be discovered.

mrgaro··on Well-Known URIs
I guess these uris are all under /.well-known/ path, which robots.yxt predates. I didn't know there are this kind of organized list of these.
mrgaro··on SpaceX discloses cause of Starship anomalies as it clears an FAA hurdle
SpaceX is at least known to have some kind of high resolution/precision microphones around the structure recording constantly so that they are able to do 3D triangulation inside the vehicle.
mrgaro··on Home Assistant: Three years later
Would you mind (somehow) sharing the source of your current node-red configurations? I'm having quite the same setup, but I really liked your approach and I would love to speed run by taking a closer look what you have. Free time is especially hard to come by now with a young kid :)
mrgaro··on Show HN: Natural-SQL-7B, a strong text-to-SQL model
Would love to get an ollama Modelfile showing an imaginary database schema as an example!
mrgaro··on Building a Password Cracker in 2024
I just read that Facebook is going to have 600 000 units of Nvidia H100 class GPUs by the end of year. What does that kind of processing power do for password cracking?

Think what if NSA could order FB to run their infrastructure for one hour? How long passwords would need to be to still resist this?

mrgaro··on CNC lasers for cutting and engraving
Please don't. It's so easy to blind somebody with a laser. I always get anxious near laser shows, especially when there's a change it's not done properly as it could still blind you several hundred meters away.
mrgaro··on The art of high performance computing
Thanks, this makes sense!
mrgaro··on The art of high performance computing
Sounds fascinating. Can you give any more details? What kind of nodes are they and how they differ from "traditional" DC hardware, say from Supermicro?
