mrdmnd··on Pilosa: open source, distributed bitmap index in Go
Neat, thanks for the clarifications. Looks like a cool tool.
mrdmnd··on Pilosa: open source, distributed bitmap index in Go
How does this compare to https://github.com/RoaringBitmap/CRoaring?

Is the difference that this one is distributed?

mrdmnd··on Amex, Challenged by Chase, Is Losing the Snob War
I've noticed this too. I'm not actually in the military, but my grandfather was a doctor in the Navy and apparently we've been (literally) grandfathered in for perpetuity. The card has raised eyebrows in places I would not have imagined it would be noticed.
mrdmnd··on Why Virtual Classes Can Be Better Than Real Ones (2015)
Ok, I'll bite - I thought this was an article about C++.
mrdmnd··on Why I Don’t Talk to Google Recruiters

mrdmnd··on Split Brain Does Not Lead to Split Consciousness
I thought this was an Jepsen-style article on some distributed systems at first.
mrdmnd··on Carmakers Are Learning Japan’s Tech Talent Doesn’t Come Cheap
I love the phrase "powerpoint engineering" and I think I'm going to use it in my daily speech patterns now.
mrdmnd··on Show HN: DeepRhyme (D-Prime) – Generating dope rhymes with machine learning
No Free Lunch ;)
mrdmnd··on Racial and Gender Discrimination in Transportation Network Companies
I think this is absolutely true; and you'd want to show drivers locations - I can't think of any way to obscure this, and it does leave a source for discrimination ("don't drive into the dangerous neighborhoods").

I'm not sure I have any good solution to that particular problem, but surely perfect is the enemy of good, and the human anonymization approach is reasonable low hanging fruit?

mrdmnd··on Racial and Gender Discrimination in Transportation Network Companies
Consider a world where you are assigned a random phrase (i.e. "Correct Horse Battery Staple") when you request a ride. The driver is never shown a name. When they are shown the set of people they could pick up, they are not shown a photo or passphrase until they accept the ride. As soon as they accept your ride, they are shown your passphrase and your photo (the former to ensure that they are picking up the right passenger, and the latter to ensure that a previously vetted passenger isn't cheating and providing their account to someone else / buying a ride for someone else).

Wouldn't this go a pretty long way towards removing obvious sources of discrimination?

mrdmnd··on Timing the time it takes to parse time
The TimeIt macro runs snippets for a variable number of iterations based on how long the snippet takes.
mrdmnd··on Ask HN: 5th grader seeking science mentor in California
Great thought. Where in California? If in San Francisco (or the Bay Area in general) I can think of a number of places and people who would be happy to talk in person.
mrdmnd··on What goes wrong in the brain chemistry of a gambling addict?
This is the first I've heard of this - can you elaborate? Is the implication that there exist a fleet of "innocent"-appearing folks carrying vast swaths of money around? Are they identifiable as such?
mrdmnd··on Elon Musk on How to Build the Future
Estimating this is probably futile, but in principle, I agree.
mrdmnd··on Generalized linear models, abridged
A good resource here is Trefethen and Bau's Numerical Linear Algebra.
mrdmnd··on OpenAI technical goals
CTO of OpenAI ;)
mrdmnd··on Expected Utility
I'd add a nit - this is the expected value of the game. I might have a utility preference curve that is non-linear in dollars - for instance, the classic U(v) = log(v).
mrdmnd··on Theranos Is Subject of Criminal Probe by U.S
Well, I know what I'm doing tonight. Cheers! This is great.
mrdmnd··on Theranos Is Subject of Criminal Probe by U.S
I just read a 32 page script and now I want you to write major television shows. Is that your actual job? This is really good.
mrdmnd··on Walking Every Street in San Francisco
You may be thinking of Hamiltonian paths ;)
mrdmnd··on PGStrom: GPU-accelerated PostgreSQL
Pedantic comment: you don't need the previous results to compute the nth fibonacci number; the recurrence has a closed form solution. It is not constant time to compute (unless you assume constant time, infinite precision arithmetic) in practice, but it can certainly be done without the prior terms.

The rest of this post is on point, though. Serialization bottlenecks (Amdahl's Law) prevent a lot of optimizations from making meaningful dents in real workloads.

mrdmnd··on Math for Machine Learning (2009) [pdf]
This is more of a primer on "the first two years of college mathematics" than a primer for Machine Learning, honestly. Still, not a bad resource.
mrdmnd··on A French Scrabble champion who doesn't speak French
I believe Jason Katz-Brown reads this board (@jasonkb) who is the author of the Quackle AI (the strongest scrabble program, perhaps?)

mrdmnd··on Toast
I know you're getting downvoted, but to be totally honest, the first thing I thought of was postgres TOAST tables as well, given the general technical nature of this site.
mrdmnd··on Airbnb Engineering
I used to be an engineer at Airbnb. It's not, in fact, the case that people are doing "unpaid overtime". My favorite example of this: there are a great number of people who work there who were MORE than willing to take a free Saturday/Sunday and host their OWN hackathon with their work-friends when the company-supported dates proved inconvienient for a lot of us. While it's true that a lot of the projects were company focused, a great deal were purely "stupid shit nobody needs and general shenanigans" projects. It's not the kind of place where people feel forced into working in a silly way. It's an awesome place full of rather clever people.

Autocorrelation may also be a useful tool here - have you considered it at all?
mrdmnd··on A Guide to the Regional Ramen of Japan
This is a great write-up. I had the fortune of visiting a national Ramen festival in Japan (and the privilege of being on national Japanese television as the novel white-person!) and I really enjoyed sampling the various regional varieties all in one place. There's an astounding degree of variation that I wouldn't have predicted, a priori.
