mrd3v0··on OpenTofu may be showing us the wrong way to fork
It is not really hard to put two and two together about what a source-available software company's developer relations person has to gain by publishing a hit piece on community forks that are created to oppose source-available licences.

That aside, it is literally in the title "developer relations." I am not sure what is outrageous in pointing that out.

mrd3v0··on OpenTofu may be showing us the wrong way to fork
The author is paid to make these articles, it is his job to make these points, valid or not. "Infoworld" is putting itself as an outlet for corporate propaganda providing a sneaky disclaimer at the bottom.
mrd3v0··on OpenTofu may be showing us the wrong way to fork
> Matt Asay runs developer relations at MongoDB.

Explains the lack of factual basis. It is literally a PR campaign.

mrd3v0··on Hacker News is not GDPR-compliant
It is easy to jump on defence of the platform one uses using a satirical non-take, but that leaves out details such as percentage of people under GDPR using HN compared to the other laws you mentioned, additionally basic compliance with GDPR, for the most part covers other data protection laws.

Avoiding a monoculture by introducing a VC-backed alternative is just asking for another monoculture.

> then use bridge/gateways if you want to support these proprietary, privacy sapping platforms.

These bridges do in fact send a lot of data still to the proprietary, privacy sapping platforms, even of those who are not using them, no?

mrd3v0··on Awesome-Linux-Minimalism
It is a low quality outdated list, but systemd should be on top of any minimalist list. It is the most violating Linux software of KISS/UNIX principle. So if anything putting it on top does validate the list.
mrd3v0··on Amazon fined in Poland for dark pattern design tricks
> I am honestly baffled Amazon hasn't found a way to compete with Allegro.

If Amazon is being treated just like all the other companies, and protection agencies are doing their job, then they wouldn't be able to use their neo-colonial business model.

See: what Amazon itself has done in the Middle East among Uber, Delivery Hero, and all the other Big Companies With More Capital have done to dominate these markets. It can't work if the governmental watchdogs like market and/or consumer authorities are able to block them.

Most laws in the world have a rationale of using fear to prevent people from doing things, rather than actually hold them accountable.

It is one of many consequences of giving up software freedom.
mrd3v0··on The Mirror (Godot bashed game engine)
Maybe using Figma as an analogy, right after the first paragraph stating a mission of software freedom and ownership, is not advisable.
mrd3v0··on Aegis v3.0 – a free, secure and open source 2FA app for Android
> The fact that it's a community project is also a nice bonus.

It is more than a bonus. This is the only kind of project you know that tomorrow, the day after or a year from now there wouldn't have profit incentives or a pending IPO to completely abuse your experience as a user and extract as much profit as possible.

mrd3v0··on Aegis v3.0 – a free, secure and open source 2FA app for Android
I'd take a more diverse UI experience on Android any day over a more polished yet heavily opinionated experience at iOS.

That being said, I feel like the main complaint about Android apps design is the fact that a lot of apps are just horrible half-assed implementations of old Material UI slapped together on a drag and drop editor like the Android Studio widget system. Offering an incentive for people to build anything and make money off data collection and ads without the corporate tyranny of Apple results in just that. So apps that are on FOSS repositories such as F-Droid are usually much cleaner to use, despite their UI/UX being just as diverse.

mrd3v0··on Arch Linux minimal container userland 100% reproducible – now what?
I am not sure if this is a tongue-in-cheek comment that's above my comedic pay grade, but if it is not:

This sounds like a lot of words that would otherwise mean nothing to any Nix/Guix user. It works. It is not "too idealistic goal", Nix repositories already contain more packages than any distribution around.

It is too late to throw the occasional uninspiring "you are too ambitious." Because they have been doing this for years now successfully.

So you would rather get rid of the government, over a business that bribes officials and sells products that are only needed due to their bribes.
mrd3v0··on Intel to Receive $8.5B in Grants to Build Chip Plants
Any industry wouldn't be "really a startup kinda business" if only a few players are pumped more than everyone else combined by orders of magnitude. Having to scale to everyone's demand is a lot more costly than if the market was fragmented.
mrd3v0··on First beta of Nintendo Switch emulator Suyu goes live
> people gathering to play a multiplayer game and then streaming the matches doesn't inherently constitute any infringement on Nintendo's rights or ability to make money.

Esports and tourneys in general generate a decent amount of money, are recurring and control a decent chunk of the narrative around games affecting their marketing.

Not trying to defend Nintendo or any other company, but their objective as a profit-driven organisation is to generate maximum profits.

mrd3v0··on IP Geolocation Is Twenty-Five Years Old
None of the ways you mentioned are the most optimal, or do I say, even valid ways to achieve a certain social goal.

Content control geo fencing is only recent, and streaming was there and will continue to be there long after IP geofencing stops being a practice. In fact, I believe if the technology wasn't around, streaming would have been accessible to more people.

Any amateur "carder" (what credit card thieves call themselves) knows that IP geolocation is in fact good for them, because they can easily load up a proxy or VPN, making this arbitrary, problematic (read: tracking) factor in their favour to steal money and commit identity fraud. There are easily accessible programs online that provide ZIP code accurate IP proxies.

I can go on and on about how terrible IP Geolocation is for almost everyone.

mrd3v0··on HIV in cell culture can be completely eliminated using CRISPR-Cas gene editing [pdf]
Sorry, can't hear you over a dozen ethical and legal violations I am in the midst of while throwing buzzwords like AI and Machine Learning.

It almost seems like with every technology there is a side that goes all in, risking mass suffering (i.e: AI, Crypto), and a side that abstains completely repeaing none of the benefits (i.e: banning GMO.)

It is almost like electing old, unqualified politicians doesn't yield good or speedy regulations.

mrd3v0··on New Attack Shows Risks of Browsers Giving Websites Access to GPU
I can't get over the fact that RSS is not an integral part of web browsers. Stripping its support was part of browsers digging their own (and the web's) grave.
mrd3v0··on Interviewing at Canonical
The hiring process sounds like it is made to recruit unquestioning human drones.

I guess that makes sense given how closed and hypocritical "the maker of the world's favourite Linux system" is. Employees having any actual interest or passion in what they are supposed to be doing would cause issues.

It is not political nor failure.

It is corporate speak for we cashed out and the new owners bought us to strip us to parts so they can get what they want out of us (i.e: talent, patent/intellectual propety) while dominating the market and reducing (potential) competition.

It is a feature, not a bug for the shareholders.

Capitalism working as intended.

Nah mate, we at Google, (bless them Mozilla crooks giving us control over their extensions), don't care about actual issues, we only update extensions to make money and limit user freedom.

> I am not my governments’ property.

That quickly changes when one has loved ones or assets inside the Fascist country. This has been done to many dual citizenship nationals.

Anyone originally from a country controlled by a tyrannical system should most definitely seize all connections to it otherwise they are opening themselves up to being a liability such as what OP is saying.

And this is coming from one of those people.
