mrcwinn··on Claude Sonnet 5
I exclusively use 5.5-xhigh-fast within Codex and find it superior to Opus 4.8.
mrcwinn··on The Boeing 747 begins its final descent
This is such an absurd statement. What US aerospace has created post 1969 is nothing short of remarkable in comparison. (And we can be proud of the Apollo era too.)
mrcwinn··on Previewing GPT‑5.6 Sol: a next-generation model
AI is just autocomplete. -> AI must be regulated. -> We want AI.
mrcwinn··on U.S. government will decide who gets to use GPT-5.6
Wait, what happened to wanting a safety first mindset and government regulation of big tech?
mrcwinn··on Oxide computer 3D rack guided tour
I understand that all employees have equal salary pay (apart from sales people who can earn more and are valued higher). Do all have equal equity and voting rights, at least within common stock?

And since transparency is a core value and principle, will you commit to sharing your cap table publicly?

mrcwinn··on Elastic lays off 7% of employees
That’s not how it works. Investors don’t mandate operational decisions. That’s for… operators. What they do ask for, in exchange for their investment, are things like revenue growth or certain margins.

You can crap on those investors. The answer then is to never take their money. But without money, the job probably wasn’t created in the first place. So the result is the same.

By the way, ever work alongside a really crappy non-executive and wonder how on earth they’re keeping their job? I sure have.

mrcwinn··on SpaceX Drops 14% in One Day, Price Now Below IPO Launch
For the sake of clarity, it's well above its historic IPO price, but near or slightly below where it began trading that day once it officially opened.
mrcwinn··on The AirPods Effect
Yes there were all these people talking on the bus before wireless headphones.
mrcwinn··on Noam Shazeer Joins OpenAI
I would just love to hear your definition of that word.
mrcwinn··on OpenAI Losses Increased Nearly 8X in 2025, with Spending Hitting $34B
The scale of the numbers is exceptional, but the shape is pretty typical for a high-growth, scale startup with a big TAM where a winner can take most. And compute, supply constrained as it is for the foreseeable future, is absolutely a moat. I come away from this thinking OpenAI is actually in very good shape given that revenue is growing fast enough that break-even has a clear path without doing anything draconian.
mrcwinn··on Leaked OpenAI financials show $38.5B loss and compute burn
That’s not how that works.
mrcwinn··on SpaceX to buy Cursor for $60B
This was a fantastically smart deal for both sides.
mrcwinn··on Amazon Announces Multibillion-Dollar Data Center in Missouri
AI works by responding to prompts. So if you’re dissatisfied with what it produces, consider a critique of its user.
mrcwinn··on Treating pancreatic tumours may have revealed cancer's master switch
Only on HN can you get content like this. What a community.
mrcwinn··on Amazon CEO's talks with U.S. officials triggered crackdown on Anthropic models
If this is true, the Trump administration did the correct and responsible thing. All the immediate pouncing last night is a good reminder to wait a moment for the facts. I’m sure there’s more to learn even still.
mrcwinn··on Open Source AI Must Win
Quick, someone start open data center and open energy system and open water supply.
mrcwinn··on US Government directive to suspend access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5
Gosh I sure hope OpenAI had nothing to do with this. That would be awfully surprising.
mrcwinn··on Why I'm Forced to Say Farewell: Google Management Has Lost Its Moral Compass
This is exhausting.
mrcwinn··on Apple decided not to roll out Siri in EU after denied request for exemption
The EU is only interested in interoperability and centralization of data so they can put their citizens under surveillance. I hope Apple continues to exit this market on the edges.
mrcwinn··on Confidential submission of draft S-1 to the SEC
Which is great because the parent comment provides a precise timeline.
mrcwinn··on xAI is looking more like a datacentre REIT than a frontier lab
Elon is controversial, and I know the popular mood is to dunk on this IPO, but in the end he gets a lot right. I think it's very likely the Tesla deal happens, and I further thing that regardless what Google and Anthropic do long-term — SpaceX/Tesla will likely have an awful lot of Optimus robots, and those robots will need an awful lot of compute. I'd be very surprised if Elon lets some frontier lab be the intelligence layer of his robotics stack when he has all the raw materials himself. And in fact, rather than introduce model COGS, he will have had the frontier labs paid for all the CapEx he'll need to run robotic inference using his own models.

Pretty smart if that's what happens.

mrcwinn··on We Think the SpaceX IPO Is Overvalued
>However, we assign this scenario, in which both Starship is reusable and scaled orbital data centers are highly successful, a 7% chance of happening

I may agree with their overall sentiment, but I think this sort of formulation is just silly nonsense from analysts who build models instead of companies.

mrcwinn··on Google to pay SpaceX $920M a month for compute capacity at xAI data centers
This is all just the typical Elon hate. What's desperate about getting paid $920,000,000 per month? If that's desperation, I'd love to start groveling more!

Given extreme supply constraints, it's very unlikely that Google or Anthropic will just suddenly cancel right after the IPO unless their own demand collapses. And even if this were true, what value would that provide Musk? Could you imagine if your newly public company suddenly received termination notices from your two largest compute customers? Disaster.

Try logic.

mrcwinn··on Meta's ships facial recognition on smart glasses
The shame of this is that even if you as a consumer choose not to buy them, others will. And while anyone can take a photo of you in public, you’ll have glasses taking pictures of you and transferring your identity and location to Meta servers (who by the way contract with the government).
mrcwinn··on Meta's ships facial recognition on smart glasses
Please hurry Apple.
mrcwinn··on The desperation of NYTimes
NYTimes is not unique, but yes, they are a for-profit entity focused on audience building and audience retention. Their audience tends to be liberal leaning types, and so their aim is to produce content for that audience. This particular example is disgusting.

My suggestion is subscribe to Breaking Points or try them for free on YouTube. You won't get the breadth of content given their scale, but you will get a more honest approach to delivering news.

mrcwinn··on Elixir v1.20: Now a gradually typed language
Please share that conversation you reference where the community said Elixir doesn’t need types because it is magic.
mrcwinn··on Anthropic surpasses OpenAI to become most valuable AI startup
You're delusional. Anthropic's success is not only the model - it's the harness. I'd absolutely be able to tell the difference between Claude Code and, say, Gemini CLI.
mrcwinn··on Ember.js 7.0
Backbone if you’re a real engineer.
mrcwinn··on Blue Origin's New Glenn blows up during static fire test
That rocket appears to have crashed into an open plain. It was a village?
