Have you looked into row-based presentation of the images? I usually feel like pages with row-based image grids have a higher-quality look to them.

See e.g. [1] and [2] for more info and [3] for an implementation.

mrccc··on How to be productive when you don't have external structure
Hey HN, I recently wrote an article on my personal productivity system. This is what keeps me going since a few years.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Cheers, Marc

The chord progression generator doesn't return correct chords, as it uses the Chromatic scale, while it should probably use a diatonic scale.

So for example for I-IV-V it gives me C, D#, E while it should give me C-F-G (https://www.justbuildthings.com/chord-progression-generator)

This should be easy to fix, though. To point you in the right direction, see e.g. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_numeral_analysis - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chord_progression

Fascinating topic, keep up the work!

While the answer to your question is "no", there is still something you'll be able to do: to express yourself and to understand spoken language.

Like other people said here, understanding will probably still be limited, esp. in writing. But expressing even complex things becomes easier.

E.g. instead of saying "Do you have medication against migraine" at a pharmacy you could say "Do you have something for pain here" while pointing at your head.

This is what we call fluency, and starting at 800 words I would argue you have basic fluency in the language. And also regarding understanding spoken language – those words might be enough to express that you haven't understood something and ask people to simplify.

Words are not enough, though – pronunciation and grammar also play their part.

If you haven't yet, I'd recommend to check out the FIRE movement (Financial Independence, Retire Early). You probably need much less than 8-10 million to exist and pursue your interests indefinitely. I'd recommend the blog by Mr. Money Mustache as a good entry-point.
mrccc··on Ask HN: What's on your home server?
I can recommend paperless. I am running it locally in a Docker container and sync database/files with iCloud (so they are backed up). I've been thinking about putting them on the actual web to access them anywhere, but so far having paperless "just" on my computer was enough.
mrccc··on Ask HN: What is your new year's resolution?
What worked really well for improving my self-control regarding porn was putting money in the game. Whenever you trip, I have to donate 100€ to an organization I don't like (in other words, hate). It should be really painful to donate this money.

I once tripped and it was extremely painful. Don't want to do this again.

Depending on how important this is to you, I'd increase/decrease the amount of money on the table.

It's very helpful to do this together with a friend, to keep each other accountable.

Thanks for the feedback. I updated the description to make it clearer :)

The idea is to click the numbers in ascending order – start with 1, 2, 3 all the way to 25.

Thank you for the feedback, I've decreased this time a by a lot now.

btw there is an unofficial leaderboard in the GitHub Readme [1]. I didn't think it was worth it to implement a proper one yet (I guess it would be quite easy to cheat there)

Good idea, thank you!
mrccc··on Show HN: I'm challenging your clicking speed with this game I rebuilt
Good idea with the reset button! For now, just reload the page :)

I already added this, but it only happens after about 4-8s. Would you suggest decreasing that time?

mrccc··on Show HN: I'm challenging your clicking speed with this game I rebuilt
What do you mean with "it made me wait"? I added some wiggles to the button so it's easier to find, but you should be able to click the button immediately after you've completed the first.

Can you try clicking the button before it wiggles?

I was thinking about reducing it to 24 cards on mobile so that there isn't one left that sticks out
mrccc··on Show HN: I'm challenging your clicking speed with this game I rebuilt
I think you're right. It's more about scanning the page and your "reflexes" than the actual speed of your clicking. I would say, though, that once you found the number you want to click on, the _accuracy_ of your clicking is important.
mrccc··on Ask HN: How will the content on Hacker News change with AI tooling?
In a way, ChatGPT predicts that the content will shift towards AI content on Hacker News – and maybe some philosophy.

I think it is currently true that emotions, values, and opinions can't be fully captured by AI – but even this will change at some point. I don't see why it shouldn't be possible to at least give the appearance that it "feels".

Based on this answer, I am also curious where this leaves sites like Wikipedia. Will it still be necessary?

mrccc··on The Most Effective Way to Learn New Words
Thank you for the suggestions!

Personally, I like using recordings of native speakers to get used to their sound. I am not sure if I can always get it right myself in the beginning.

BUT recording yourself is invaluable nonetheless! I usually do this in a separate exercise by using transcriptions (which I encountered first in jazz – see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transcription_(music)). As you suggested, saying the word out loud before Anki plays the recording is important, too.

Maybe. ;)
mrccc··on The Most Effective Way to Learn New Words
After thinking more about the process, I also found that it is quite cumbersome. Especially in the beginning, it takes a lot of time to create new cards. And because of the effort, most people will probably not attempt this. But after a bit of training, I can create new cards in a matter of seconds. When you've already opened all the tabs to Dictionary/Google Images/Forvo/Reverso, it's actually simple enough.

But yeah – I'm still thinking about how to automate the boring (i.e. non-valuable) part.

Hey HN! At the beginning of this year, I decided to learn French. In Mai, I moved to Aix-en-Provence (which is in the south of France) and spent three months learning the language. I think I've succeeded

During this time, I found a method that worked very well for me to quickly learn new vocabulary.

In short: - Use a spaced repetition system like Anki[1] that quizzes you on words the moment before you forget them - Use images instead of translations on your flashcards to make them super memorable - Create mnemonics if words don't stick, either through a story or visually using StableDiffusion/Midjourney

I'm just getting started and will continue to write more posts on language learning in the next few weeks. I already wrote an article[2] about the principles of language learning that might also be useful to you. I'm curious about your thoughts.

I wish everyone a great weekend :)

PS: I'm resubmitting this in hope for a bit more traction. I hope that this is okay as stated in the HN FAQs?

I‘m hoping that messaging apps will add a feature that allows you to transcribe voice messages after you received them. I find it rather annoying to listen to five minutes of audio when I could read a message in less than a minute.

In Europe, this might be illegal: > Merchants operating in the European Union must give customers 7 business days’ notice before changing the price of their recurring billing plan; 7 business days’ notice is also required before billing customers if it has been 6+ months since their last payment. If you don’t operate in the EU, these notices aren't required (but they're still good practice).
