mrcarruthers··on Migrating Facebook to MySQL 8.0
Reading the article, seems like facebook has added support for it in one of their internal patches.
mrcarruthers··on Migrating Facebook to MySQL 8.0
If I remember correctly, 8.0 has them finally. 8.0 seems to have fixed a lot of the weird legacy eccentricities of MySQL
mrcarruthers··on Migrating Facebook to MySQL 8.0
Yeah if you're using Firefox and you have the FB Container, it's working as advertised
mrcarruthers··on Squarespace S1
But they're not just hosting. A website shop will probably charge you a few thousand to build a site and then charge you again whenever you want changes. $150/yr just for that alone is a bargain to someone who cannot do it themselves.

Sponsoring YouTube videos :P
mrcarruthers··on PyO3: Rust Bindings for the Python Interpreter
how does it compare against ciso8601 perf-wise? https://pypi.org/project/ciso8601/

to be fair ciso8601 only parses iso8601 datetimes, but that's enough for 90%+ of my use cases.

mrcarruthers··on Changes to Code Search Indexing
AKA the indexes are too large and we don't want to spend the money
mrcarruthers··on Google Poly is shutting down
colour me surprised google is shutting down another product /s
mrcarruthers··on iPhone 12 does not come with power charger or earbuds in the box
As much as I'd rather they just use USB-C, the problem with it is that it's not standard. None of the fast charging USB-C things are compatible with each other (device, charger, or cable). At least with Lightning there's no chance of accidentally frying your device.

Couple additional things would be interesting:

1. UUID generator (v1/v4, etc...)

2. Text diff checker (two sets of text, show the differences).

3. JSON diff. Show differences between two large-ish json object.

4. CSV to JSON converter.

mrcarruthers··on Black Tom Explosion
So, did you just find that image of the Statue of Liberty on Reddit as well? https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/ixjn27/a... one of the top comment chains mentioned this explosion.
mrcarruthers··on Streaming Is Laying Bare How Big ISPs and Big Tech Work Together Against Users
I'm assuming he's Canadian and the other company is Rogers.
mrcarruthers··on Google to buy 6.6% stake in ADT in home security push
I can tell you that Google does not sell your information to anyone. They horde all of their data so that they can sell advertisements targeting groups of people (scarily accurate groups) but they won't sell data on individuals as that impacts their competitive advantage.
mrcarruthers··on MusicKit JS
Well it's using promises, so you can just await those.

But agreed, the documentation looks like it was written in 2014/2015.

mrcarruthers··on Jony Ive to form independent design company with Apple as client
Even worse yet, once you get the dongle you cannot use your mouse while it is charging cause the port is on the bottom.
mrcarruthers··on Google launches AMP for email
Because HTML in emails is a notoriously painful process to get working even remotely well.

Not all email providers support HTML in the same way. Some examples:

* At one point Gmail did not support style tags and all styles had to be inline. * Outlook for years used the Word HTML processor which had all sorts of limitations. Hell to get a button you had to create it in VML and put a conditional "if Microsoft do this" on it. * Some (up until a few years ago) versions of Outlook ignore either padding/margin on CSS (forget which one) * In order to layout your email so that it works across all clients, forget about using anything remotely modern. You have to use tables everywhere like it's 2000 all over again.

I'm probably forgetting a bunch, it's been a couple years since I had to deal with it.

With all these issues, adding yet another thing onto it is just asking for pain.

mrcarruthers··on My Chromecast Ultra would not start until I began answering 8.8.8.8
My Roku does (almost) the same thing. It defaults to 8.8.8.8 to attempt to block dns proxies, but if you block 8.8.8.8 on your router, unlike the Chromecast, it will actually use the DNS server my router provides.
mrcarruthers··on PostgreSQL 11 Released
One thing that Postgres does not do well is row churn. If you have a table that have rows that are constantly added/deleted/updated, Postgres tends to bloat pretty quickly because of the way they handle updates. Say what you will about using a relational db for that kind of data, but if you need to, Postgres isn't a great choice.
mrcarruthers··on Ask HN: What are some examples of beautiful x86 assembly code?
Someone got the source code for Super Mario Bros and commented it up: https://gist.github.com/1wErt3r/4048722 (not x86 though...)
