You can also do that directly in 'man'.
mrcarrot··on Genoa Bridge Collapse: The Road to Tragedy
I don't read that sentence as saying that Autostrade are solely a PR company (and certainly the rest of the article makes clear that this is not the case), just that they are managing talking to the media for that subcontractor.
mrcarrot··on No Longer a Secret: How Israel Destroyed Syria's Nuclear Reactor
Googling the title from an incognito mode browser session appears to work.
mrcarrot··on Earthsea – A Rival to Tolkien and George RR Martin (2015)
Absolutely. I've found I have a really hard time with how he writes action as well. I always feel as though he's describing someone playing a video game.
mrcarrot··on Freelancer.com has ruined my life
He meant “gist”.
mrcarrot··on Paw – macOS HTTP client for testing and describing APIs
As a self-confessed Paw fanboy, I'm kinda baffled by this. It seems a bit like complaining that you're forced to work with spreadsheets in Excel or text documents in Word. You need _somewhere_ to put the requests, and even if you don't want to have one Paw project per, err... project, you can just create one and then use it for everything and it'll even re-open it automatically every time you open the app.

And, if it helps, you can rename a request in Paw by clicking on its name in the sidebar while you have the request selected or clicking on the name where it shows up as a title in the Description panel in the middle of the screen.

mrcarrot··on Apple Watch sales up over 50% since last year
Exactly, the average person didn't care how they were connecting their MP3 player to their computer, as long as they could connect it and the player itself was convenient size and looked nice.

> ...quick question: what's the keyboard shortcut on a Mac to go to the beginning of your current line? Ah trick question, it's different for every god damned application! And some applications don't even allow for that without highlighting the entire line!

I realise this isn't really the crux of your post, and I broadly agree with you that computers still suck. But the answer to this question is CMD + left arrow. I have no idea what applications you're using where this doesn't work.

mrcarrot··on The EU’s new roaming rules
If you're calling from your French mobile phone? Yes, isn't that exactly the point of the new rules?
mrcarrot··on Proton.B: What this Mac malware does
They have all your saved passwords from your web browser, too, and your mac user account's password. I'd guess there's a reasonable amount of people who re-use at least one of those as their 1password master password.
mrcarrot··on The stupidity of crowds
And it seems like a good example of why more referendums wouldn't do much good in the current UK political system.

Who's going to be setting the questions? Presumably the government? Which means realistically the Conservative party or Labour (generously assuming they can recover to a position of electability at some point). Why would they then ever pose referendum questions where they wouldn't like one of the answers (especially in light of the last referendum)? How does anyone really get more of a democratic voice when you'd just be choosing from options selected by the 2 big parties so that their preferred option is all but guaranteed to win?

"Should we: A) waste £90 million on a complicated new voting system, or B) keep our traditional voting system and spend the money on the NHS?"

mrcarrot··on The stupidity of crowds
I'd rather the UK did something about the effective disenfranchisement caused by FPTP parliamentary elections first.
mrcarrot··on UK triggers the official Brexit process in a letter to EU
Even the current UK government doesn't try to argue that the UK has lost its sovereignty by virtue of its EU membership. Its own white paper on Brexit acknowledged that the UK was still entirely sovereign.

For the record, I'm really not trolling, but my position on the sovereignty argument is that for me as a UK citizen, it just doesn't matter since I have such a minuscule say in how things are run either way. And I tend to find legislation that comes from the EU (like the abolition of mobile roaming charges, or the working time directive) far less objectionable than the laws that UK politicians draw up by themselves.

mrcarrot··on UK triggers the official Brexit process in a letter to EU
That looks like a 'no', then.

The UK not being able to make its own laws (as your original comment implied), seems to me to be a quite different thing to having to adopt EU directives (as you are now talking about), and I feel like it's exactly this kind of confusion (deliberate or otherwise) over the years that has contributed to the atmosphere that lead to Brexit.

mrcarrot··on UK triggers the official Brexit process in a letter to EU
Some of them, probably. Were they the same ones?
mrcarrot··on UK triggers the official Brexit process in a letter to EU
Can you point to any case where the UK could not make a law that it wanted to because of "having to wait for Brussels"?
mrcarrot··on UK triggers the official Brexit process in a letter to EU
Surely "experts" were predicting things would change immediately _after the UK leaves the EU_. Which as the GP said, hasn't happened yet.
mrcarrot··on SQLITE: JSON1 Extension
Yep, I've done something very similar for payment processing (from multiple providers) recently. Have a well defined schema containing the columns that I _know_ I need now for handling a transaction, but also include a jsonb column that stores all of the data that the payment provider provides for the transaction.

For one, this makes debugging easier, and it also means that should business needs change in the future and some field that we've been receiving becomes important for payment processing, it can be extracted from the json field and promoted to a column in the table, without having to _now_ define a load of columns for every possible field that every payment provider can ever supply.

mrcarrot··on New XPS 15 Laptop
Yeah, I can access the URL from Austria, but I'm not sure I'm actually seeing info about the new XPS. There don't seem to be any specs anywhere, so it's hard to be sure.
mrcarrot··on Married to someone with anxiety
> but we all have the ability to tell which of the thoughts occur to us are good ones worth listening to and which aren't

I can assure you, we don't - for some people this is not at all clear, and especially not without outside help.

mrcarrot··on A world without the Mac Pro
I assume he's talking about files in Finder, where you can't just CMD+x, CMD+v like you'd expect (though I think there is some kind of CMD+SOMETHING+V shortcut that will move a file after copying it).
mrcarrot··on How pure is the beer in Germany?
No, but it includes advertising.
mrcarrot··on Switching from macOS: The Basics
There are adblocking plugins available now, yes. Though last time I checked uBlock Origin wasn't one of them, unfortunately.

You didn't buy an iPhone in 'a while', but you imply that you own one where you can (unintentionally) use 3D touch, so either a 6S or a 7. So you didn't buy an iPhone since... last year?
mrcarrot··on Apple Increases Prices of Macs in U.K. By 20 Percent
As far as I know, yes the memory is soldered in.
mrcarrot··on PayPal 2FA Bypass
Nowhere in the article does it say that the POST data was in the URL. As I understood it, he was editing the request body before the request was sent to PayPal's server.
mrcarrot··on [dead]
The media can't be very good at propaganda if they were 'all attacking the right wing guy' and he _still_ managed to poll almost 50% of the vote.

I'm not the parent, but I wrote this [1] a year ago, and I think at least the first section still works for getting JSX syntax highlighting working.
