mrcactu5··on Beautiful Online SICP
this must have been so much work. SICP is an intricate masterpiece. So many projects like this fail mid-way. Even if all you do is change the CSS style, that's an accomplishment in itself.
mrcactu5··on The Technique of Gregorian Chironomy (1955) [pdf]
those curves on like every other page, are those the conductor's hands?
mrcactu5··on With a 10-day supply of opioids, 1 in 5 become long-term users
every few years I get an operation, this year it was 4 wisdom teeth extractions. they gave me 21 oxycodones, I took 18, threw 3 down the trash. (this was on top of maximum strength ibuprophen)

for acute pain, discipline.

mrcactu5··on University of Tokyo Graduate School Entrance Exam – Mathematics (2016) [pdf]
this is graduate school of information science, not the mathematics department of University of Tokyo

here's the exam (in Japanese)

mrcactu5··on Rookie Doctors Will Soon Be Allowed to Work Up to 28 Hours Straight
don't you mean work with hippa?
mrcactu5··on Children prefer to read books on paper rather than screens
you can't write on a computer screen -- even with touch screens it's rather clumsy.

books took several thousand years to evolve.... give them some credit.

mrcactu5··on CIA malware and hacking tools
Just something totally ridiculous. These spyware / malware competitions remind me of poker in that these are games of imperfect information and we just throw hoops tring to gain a tiny bit more information than the next guy, to improve our bets.
mrcactu5··on Hydrogen – An advanced drum machine for Linux
everyone on Instagram puts music tracks to their videos. they could be ironing their clothes but they will attack a hip-hop track our country music tune and get 10000 views quickly
mrcactu5··on Tutorial for Wykobi – A C++ Computational Geometry Library
these tutorials read like a computational geometry textbook. I have gotten stuck even on simple algorithms like the intersection of two lines. at least in the beginning it may be hard to compute bugs
mrcactu5··on Inside the Knotty World of ‘Anyon’ Particles
These diagrams may be helpful in discussing the entanglement of the anyon worldlines

mrcactu5··on Aheui: Esoteric programming language designed for Hangul
this isn't esoteric at all. We are discriminating against Korea when we do not accommodate their alphabet.

China and Japan obviously have to accommodate themselves as there is no possibility of having one key for each Kanji (or Chinese character). There was a nice documentary showing arcane Chinese characters or different descendants of the same Chinese characters.

Does this encode the font or merely the character (as an entity)?

mrcactu5··on Making math more Lego-like
all these wonderful graphic languages exist. now it's time to put them into practice!
mrcactu5··on New Number Systems Seek Their Lost Primes
I have had trouble understanding class numbers. Usually they measure the "failure" of unique factorization. So how does these failures become a special type of number, that multiply to form a group?

Here is an article explaining why exp(pi*sqrt(163)) = is near an integer: http://mathoverflow.net/questions/4775/why-are-powers-of-exp... http://math.stackexchange.com/questions/4544/why-is-e-pi-sqr...

I have met all three of the mathematicians pictured.

mrcactu5··on Ask HN: Good public speaking course/resources?
have you considered creating an instagram channel and just talking about things you like?

when I record, I get to see my own body language, my phone changes my speaking voice and picks up my very strong Bronx accent.

mrcactu5··on Mathematicians becoming data scientists
I remember asking why i was rejected from Palantir and vaguely recall the phrase "too mathematical".

After years of trying I have been unable to make the transition from Mathematics into Data Science and have since shifted my attention to other things.

mrcactu5··on A Man Stopped Thousands of People Becoming HIV-Positive
HIV is a pretty rare disease. About 1 in 300 people in the USA. So I don't understand 1 in 4 gay men are HIV+.
mrcactu5··on Machine Learning from scratch: Bare bones implementations in Python
sci-kit learn is excellent, but their implementations are a bit to complicated to learn from.

this is for people who don't just want to tune parameters but build the whole thing from scratch

I can buy buy a pie all the fix-ins from a bakery, or I can buy the ingredients myself, and make it to exactly my liking. it may not be a professional.

mrcactu5··on Big Picture of Calculus (2010) [video]
I was a teaching assistant at UC Santa Barbara for 3 years, I can tell you, students might slug through the calculations , but none -- or a precious few -- really get the big picture.

Mostly, it is that calculus pedagogy is a disaster. And it hasn't been updated to include recent advances in technology (such as Data Science)

Strang is an amazing lecturer. I can tell you, that far into your Masters and PhD these same basic issues resurface. There's at least one project I can think of where the entire problem hinges on taking one derivative.

mrcactu5··on Raymond Smullyan has died
this is very sad. I live blocks from Lehman college but that was a few decades before my time (if he taught in 1979). Unrelated, there is also Melvyn Nathan who does additive combinatorics.
mrcactu5··on Show HN: Rumuki, a prenup for sex tapes
i observe it was written in Haskell

https://github.com/rumuki/rumuki-server/tree/master/app

mrcactu5··on Ellie – An Elm Live Editor
it's a little bit pink for my taste. There's a way to change the CSS, right?

im a huge fan of the Elm broswer. and have been using Elm with atom along with elm reactor. That has worked adequately. Most difficulties are ironed out by making sure the Elm code compiles. Then at least all the parts are fitting together.

But maybe I have written code that compiles, but doesn't express what I am wanting.

mrcactu5··on Oxford Deep NLP – An advanced course on natural language processing
coookie monster and the fairy keep exchanging apples <----> bananas

how does this help me solve NLP

mrcactu5··on Ask HN: What device do you use to read academic papers with?
i read arXiv on my android smart-phone using Xodo PDF viewer , which lets me highlight and underline in color.

Reams of paper saved and I can read anywhere... but I can't do scratch-work on my cell phone!

mrcactu5··on Google fixes a problem with AMP, lets you view and share publisher’s own links
as an end-user, I was suspicious of AMP because it changed the websites slightly and didn't let me share the URL.

now I see there are legal (intellectual property) reasons why that is wrong as well.

mrcactu5··on The State of Go
i love languages and i am enjoying seeing Go mature as a language. At the moment I do have my hands tied with Elm and Haskell.

Originally I am a Python programmer. Any advice for people transitioning for Python? What are some of the advantages of Go?

mrcactu5··on Lychee identified as cause for mystery deadly childhood illness in India
Sorry for being too Western. I think of Lychee's something as a rarity and a delicacy but I can find them in Chinatown.

When I was in mainland China, near Guangzhou, I remember a woman trying to sell me lychees by the pound -- or whatever unit of measure -- if only I could understand the price she had wanted.

If I understand correctly, these are children from impoverished regions, who only eat Lychees? and they get a type of food poisoning?

mrcactu5··on 6.S191: Introduction to Deep Learning
we are discussing Deep Learning at the math meetup @ BuzzFeed!

mrcactu5··on Using rational numbers to key nested sets [pdf]
this could be helpful to iterate through tree-like structures. Such as trees. * I was going to mention Calkin-Wilf * discussed below.

Conway games also take values that are fractions but only dyadic numbers (2^k as denominator) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_Numbers_and_Games

mrcactu5··on Proofs are Programs – 19th Century Logic and 21st Century Computing (2000) [pdf]
i am having my doubts these days.

i would like to read my programs as proofs. then I ask myself what is the Amazon.com front page proving?

we talk about proof writing in Haskell or Agda. What about Python? Can we prove things there?

And finally I think about the statements I would actually like to prove? Much of mathematics requires second order logic or beyond, such as the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus.

So for me the triad between Math and Logic and Computer Science is less than air-tight and will remain that way.

mrcactu5··on [dead]
i am intrigued by this. Discrediting NYT and CNN and that fact the checkers are themselves fake.
