mrbig4545··on Jeff Bezos Says Amazon Won’t Tolerate ‘Callous’ Management Practices
I always thought HR was there to manage the resources the humans need, e.g. teabags. That and justifying their existence by making more resources for the humans. It really does strike me a non-job that requires a lot of work to keep in existence

That's about the only dealings I have with them. I guess that's a benefit of working at a small company :)

On a serious note though, you're right, HR is not your friend, it's there for the companies sack, not yours. I personally have more faith in my immediate manager that HR, at least you have contact with them, vs the nameless/faceless myth that is HR

mrbig4545··on Resize.ly – Images resized, responsive, and retina ready
That it works. Those gifs have weird layouts and transparency things going on, and to get them to scale correctly is tricky.

I guess what I was getting at is they're my acid test for image scaling

edit: also I mean the smaller image, on the left of the big one. The big one is probably a copy of the original

mrbig4545··on Resize.ly – Images resized, responsive, and retina ready
I can't edit, but here's the code, https://gist.github.com/anonymous/1cecd2288ebef0cf90f1
mrbig4545··on Resize.ly – Images resized, responsive, and retina ready
it's a tricky task, but it can be done.

mrbig4545··on Resize.ly – Images resized, responsive, and retina ready
No problem, I only know this because I had to use it yesterday. It's not fully supported yet, but it's good enough as long as you keep using src as a fallback

http://caniuse.com/#feat=srcset

mrbig4545··on Resize.ly – Images resized, responsive, and retina ready
Nice one for that, I didn't know this existed!

seems I pass this one ok, https://thisaintnews.com/view/picture/138385/downscale-test

Thanks to https://metacpan.org/pod/Imager

Although I passed this one no problems, I find animated gifs to be the worst thing to resize, especially the ones where the changes are part of a layer over another layer

e.g. look at this one in gimp/photoshop

https://thisaintnews.com/static/user/pics/1218067200/1218395...

layer two is just enough to cover layer one and make the hand move, the rest is transparent. but at least the layers are the same size

some animated gifs have the new layer not the same canvas size as the layer underneath, so you have to adjust the layer offsets correctly or they end up all over the place

Infact I have a few evil gifs for testing this

https://thisaintnews.com/view/picture/138386/test-gif-1

https://thisaintnews.com/view/picture/137264/test-gif-2

https://thisaintnews.com/view/picture/137265/test-gif-3

https://thisaintnews.com/view/picture/138387/test-gif-4

I can't remember the exact differences, but I do remember they go from easy to hard to resize correctly

mrbig4545··on Google Hangouts 4.0: now simpler, faster, more beautiful
They should just concentrate on making it work properly on android

The amount of times it thinks I'm in a call and I'm not is far too many. Or it doesn't dial. Or doesn't ring. And if turn the video on there's a good chance it'll crash so hard I'll have to force stop it.

Which is a shame as I really like hangouts

Also the sms part should be better integrated, why can't I view/send sms on my phone from gmail?

mrbig4545··on Ask HN: How do you deal with getting older?
one day at a time ;)

but seriously, that's how i do it. i never worry about the future, it'll be right. and if it's not it's not, no point worrying about what might be

mrbig4545··on L. Condoms (YC S15) Provides Safe Sex, On-Demand
And they say we're not in a tech bubble.

In what world is this a viable company? It's not, you can get condoms everywhere, and it'll be fsater than this, and cheaper.

But because it has an app, millions of dollars will be thrown at it to keep it afloat, but in the end it will sink and the money will be wasted.

What's next, an app for getting 2 slices in under an hour for when you want a sandwich?

mrbig4545··on Why Rent Is So High and Pay So Low
I don't know, I haven't worked in the south. But I earn £45k, my rent is £650 for a house with a big garden and a garage, a loaf of bread is 75p and a beer is in the range of £1.30-3, usually around £2.20

When I was in London, I couldn't get a beer for less than a fiver

mrbig4545··on Why Rent Is So High and Pay So Low
My rent is low and my pay is high. North England is good for that.
mrbig4545··on Monkey the Cat Hunts for Dinner
I did this when I had 3 cats a while back.

It's hard work, but it goes like this (over a couple of months!) only move onto the next step when the cat is comfortable

  1. move the litter box next to the toilet
  2. slowly raise it to toilet height
  3. put it over the toilet seat
  4. make an insert for the toilet with litter in, and small hole for drainage
(i used a sheet of 5mm pvc iirc, and a heat gun to mould it into a bowl that sat over the rim of the bowl)
  5. slowly use less litter
  6. when there's no litter left, make the hole slightly bigger
  7. keep repeating making the hole slightly bigger
  8. when the hole is full size, take the insert away
1 cat hated it, I think the splashing noise scared him. The other didn't mind. The youngest loved it.

In the end I went back to the litter tray as it was distressing cat 1 too much.

The worst thing about this training is it takes months, and I only had one toilet, and removing the inset litter tray was a huge pita!

There was something quite odd about going to the toilet and it being occupied by a cat though!

Here's a pic of cat3, happy as larry. Even after I put the litter tray back he carried on using the toilet for a few weeks

https://thisaintnews.com/static/user/pics/1219881600/1220319...

I think it would work best if I had 2 toilets, so it wasn't such an effort for me and guests to use it, and if there was only 1 cat instead of 3.

It's too much work trying to train 3 cats to use it at the same time, and to convince them the floor is not a better option

mrbig4545··on Monkey the Cat Hunts for Dinner
I've taken a chance and decided to trust you. So I've ordered this book, don't let me down random internet stranger!
mrbig4545··on Monkey the Cat Hunts for Dinner
I'm going to use it to train my cat to close doors after she opens them!
mrbig4545··on Firefox exploit found in the wild
I guess now is a good time to change my ssh keys. joy

even though I don't use pdf.js, have ublock and a strong key password, I'm not risking it.

I have access to so many servers, I'd rather spend 30 mins changing keys than take the chance

mrbig4545··on Why pre is better than post production code review
we use gitlab, it makes doing pre code review easy. when your code is ready, send a merge request, someone else has to review it to merge it.

most of the time it doesn't catch anything, but every now and then it does, so that's cool.

it also means we can revert features easily most of the time, should the need arise.

all in all, gitlab is really good and you should check it out

mrbig4545··on How I Gave Up Alternating Current
sorry, but I can't take someone who doesn't cook because soylent is more efficient seriously.

edit: ah, he's the creator of soylent. even less reason to take his seriously. humans are not supposed to live off a drink. I've always assumed it was a joke product, but I'm begining to realise that unfortunately it's not.

Still, he can drink his algea, and I'll keep eating what I eat. Each to their own

mrbig4545··on Ask HN: Do you use Vagrant or Docker for active development?
Vagrant and puppet. And it's the same puppet we use for production, so we're as close as we can get.
mrbig4545··on Ask HN: Why use Docker and what are the business cases for using it?
Sure, this is the one I used, with private internet access.com , https://github.com/jbogatay/docker-piavpn

I'm sure you could easily change it to work with other VPN providers

mrbig4545··on Ask HN: Why use Docker and what are the business cases for using it?
This is not something that is unique to docker though. I could just as easily set up a hook to deploy our site without docker, but it's not something I need.

I prefer to manually deploy, it's only one command, and I can make sure it's all worked correctly.

That said, I will be moving that command to a chat command, as I like that. But even then, it'll be a manually triggered command.

I have auto deploy setup for CI testing, as in that case I do want to know that those branches are ready for deployment to prod, when I want to.

mrbig4545··on Ask HN: Why use Docker and what are the business cases for using it?
I never figured it out, we could do everything we need in production with LXC, puppet, carton and perlbrew. Combined with a vagrant box for dev, we have no issues.

Although I do use docker to run deluge in a container with openvpn on my home pc, but only because someone else had gone to the trouble of writing the dockerfile and getting it to work.

It seems to break a lot though, when I have time I'm going to get rid of it and replace it with a systemd-nspawn container, because there's less handwaving involved and I can get it to work correctly.

mrbig4545··on Montreal cracks down on UberX; seizes 40 cars and fines drivers
In Manchester, UK (I don't know if it's like this in the rest of the country), uber is a normal registered taxi service, it's not normal people using the app to give people rides. It works really well
mrbig4545··on Pre-Pooping Your Pants with Rust
I don't know the wtf metric, but whatever it is it's not about "poop". So I'm going to say it's different.
mrbig4545··on Pre-Pooping Your Pants with Rust
I tend to keep him updated with rust news, so that when the day comes, I've laid enough groundwork to be able to do something in it without having to explain what it is and why etc.

And part of that is showing flaws, and how they're resolved/worked around and so on.

mrbig4545··on Pre-Pooping Your Pants with Rust
I couldn't agree more. the article is well written, but the title puts me off a lot.

How am I going to show this to my boss, and have him take it seriously with such an infantile title?
