mradek··on High-documentation, low-meeting work culture
In America when we can’t explain something we print more money and redo the solution. Often creating more problems but that’s our flywheel we’re talking about!
mradek··on Self Hosting a Google Maps Alternative with OpenStreetMap
Google maps with its massive places data set is just too good. It’s expensive but I find it is always consistently up to date and mostly reliable. Have found some bugs with the places api which I reported, such as it not working for some queries which are off by 0.001 lat/lng
mradek··on Amazon Alexa is on pace to lose $10B this year
I can turn it off or stow it away somewhere, and it’s fine. Not the most convenient to do that with Alexa
mradek··on Ask HN: Why do you like Visual Studio Code?
It’s got extensions. That work.

It’s easy to install and start using. Immediate.

It’s customizable. My workspace is perfect.

I have just one keybind customization and that’s to cmd + J or ctrl + J to switch between integrated terminal and editor. Without making the terminal disappear.

I was using spacemacs prior to VSC and now I spend more time coding and not fiddling some settings all the time.

mradek··on Ask HN: How to deal with co-founder betrayal
99 range?

In all seriousness these kinds of stories are why I’m focused on going slow and learning a ton and doing things solo. A lot of my favorite artists are solo musicians and while they’re not super popular at least they’re lifestyle musicians.

mradek··on Ask HN: Why don't people learning to drive use simulators?
I’m sure in a few decades people won’t even need to drive. Let alone know stick.
mradek··on Why Twitter didn’t go down: From a real Twitter SRE
Tangent but I do hope that Musks trim down results in orgs that have less “executives” and a layered cake of a org structure, and more autonomous small teams that execute on shared overarching initiatives.

I really don’t understand why so many tech companies have like 8 layers of engineering levels. If the argument is that you need more money so more levels, just have a bigger band. Don’t chase titles they don’t mean shit. Not to mention the management stacks that seem to just hang out in meetings and take pvt. I haven’t worked at a proper startup but I’ve been on projects where a dozen or so people rebuilt apps used by tens of millions of people in a few months, or launched completely new applications for bigger companies.

Now that I work in a tech company (not big tech, but still a multibillion dollar corp) I’ve noticed that since IPO we have added a ton of bureaucracy whereas back in the day we were small teams building completely new and at times complex features. Literally was in a meeting earlier this month where people were patting each other on the back because we added a single attribute to a table. I’m obviously reducing the entire initiative to a small thing but it kind of explains all we had to do. It’s soul crushing but with the economy the way it is I must deal with it. Hell I’m down to show up next Monday and work for Elon if he wants a go getter. At least I’ll get to DO stuff. Or any other startup in SF if they are hiring.

Thanks for the laugh I needed that
mradek··on Amazon Alexa is on pace to lose $10B this year
Still boggles my mind that people willingly put these kinds of devices in their homes.
mradek··on Bell Works New Jersey
Used to go there daily for a project a few years ago. Pretty interesting campus and spent some time walking the hallways. They had some ancient looking computers which was interesting.
mradek··on NASA’s Orion spacecraft reaches the moon, flying 81 miles above the surface
Because it’s NASA and the primary audience is American tax payers who funded this.
mradek··on Mercedes Makes Better Performance a $1,200 Subscription in Its EVs
For sure. My next car will be an EV. Maybe a model X if I am financially able.
mradek··on Mercedes Makes Better Performance a $1,200 Subscription in Its EVs
More reasons why I’ll be keeping my ICE until I have to get an EV again. Total operational cost per month is about 300-400. My Tesla was nice (but cost me about 1500/mo) maybe by the time I have to get a new car the interior quality will be much better.
mradek··on Bob Iger back as Disney CEO
Maybe they can lower the production costs of these shows.

Most media these days is basically all CGI and kind of crappy. Add some Disney cooking shows, talk shows, and stuff like that to bring in grandmas and busy moms. Add some nerd Star Wars podcasts and bring in people like me who want to nerd out on Mandalorian. Don’t always need to spend 50-200m on cgi heavy shows.

mradek··on South Africa's national electricity crisis to worsen
Not a fan of crypto but this is a legit use of btc buy and sell on the other side.
mradek··on Hyundai’s Ioniq 6 EV makes its US debut
I'm also in California in a city environment, maybe that's why? Otherwise yeah I am getting ripped off D:
mradek··on Eye contact marks the rise and fall of shared attention in conversation
I am terrible at eye contact. First of all my eyeball FOV is set to like 60 and I wear glasses so when people are too close it’s hard for me to make eye contact because I just see their whole face lol. Also when I talk to some people who make strong eye contact I feel like they’re looking into my soul and it’s uncomfortable.

I know it’s a me problem, just my experience tho lol.

mradek··on Hyundai’s Ioniq 6 EV makes its US debut
How old are you? I bought a model 3 performance when I was 27 and sold it a year ago. I was paying 285/month with Allstate (before Tesla started offering insurance). I drive my old ICE now and pay 108/month. Clean record.

From what I understand the older you are the less you pay.

mradek··on Ask HN: What is the most impactful thing you've built?
Very cool! Thanks for sharing.
mradek··on Mozilla revenue 2021 increases 20%
Been using Firefox since I switched to Debian full time for my Linux box and backend development. Really happy 4 them.

mradek··on The Kalevala (Crawford Translation, 1888)
I'm Indian guy and I have always been super into mythology since I was a kid. I remember reading an English version of this when I was in 5th or 6th grade and it kind of traumatized me with some of the tragic aspects of the story, but overall it was awesome. It also got me into Ensiferum and various metal bands lol.

Huge fan of Indian, Egyptian, Nordic, and N. & S. American mythology.

mradek··on React Native made me give up a project today
Use flutter if you’re looking to build something quick for cross platform iOS android.

Upgrading versions or dependencies isn’t a nightmare.

Dart is easy to use and a pretty good language.

Lots of community support and dependencies.

It works.

mradek··on How to hack the simulation?
There’s no way this isn’t a simulation lol. Like how can something not have a beginning or ending and just exist? Infinity is such a trippy concept. At least to a average intelligent guy like me.. maybe it’s kubernetes and when a universe fails it just gets restarted.. but then who made the k8s lol

Hopefully the hack is something like an ultra dose of shrooms or something biochemical like that which is the GUI into comprehending the various components of the simulation, because it’s simulations all the way down and above. A simulation for the simulation for the simulation. And a simulation that wraps that simulation.

I feel like I might go insane just thinking about it. Maybe I’ll deal with this Postgres bug tomorrow. What is tomorrow?

mradek··on Ask HN: Work instead of tech?
I tried this but eventually I think about money in the bank not growing and it makes me sad. It’s just the sad reality.
mradek··on Ask HN: What technology seems like magic to you?
Plumbing. I’m from a developing country and when I moved to USA the plumbing here makes me feel super impressed. Somehow it works.
mradek··on Musk’s Twitter Buy Makes No Sense – Unless It’s Part of Something Bigger
TFW you’re debating what to order at Panera bread while thinking about some bug you found. Meanwhile ppl be out here plotting and playing out world domination.
