mr337··on Step by Step: Thinking through and beyond the repair manual
Not going to lie, I never would have thought someone could sell those for $10/each.
mr337··on Linux Touchpad Like MacBook Update: 2023 Progress on Smooth Scrolling
Same here and on my laptops I don't need the extra finger touch. It just works.

I have had a work MPB for years and while the touchpad is nice I just use the other touchpads with no problems.

Then again as I like bigger displays I use an external keyboard and mouse when not traveling.

mr337··on Ultra-processed food exposure and adverse health outcomes: umbrella review [pdf]
Funny enough I recently came across this video [1] about ultra-processed foods maybe being labeled "predigested". It sort of got me thinking but makes an interesting point that if you take a basic ingredient like a potato and break it down into a starch slurry it does sound like it has been pre-digested.

mr337··on Netlify just sent me a $104k bill for a simple static site
I wish that was so straight forward. You can google this incident where an empty lot got a 35K water bill and the water company said it was an error, then backtracked on that and still saying 35K is due.

> Towards the end of 2023, the DWM seemingly corrected the issue. Revive received an email stating: “The prior balance on the account reflected water leakage that was the result of Department of Watershed actions. Once the leak was addressed and the account properly adjusted, the corrected balance for the property is $219.24.” However, DWM soon backtracked and claimed that the $219.24 quote was made in error and that the nearly $30,000 balance still applied.

mr337··on US will relax pollution-limiting rules for vehicle emissions
The OP must be talking about eastern Alaska ;)
mr337··on BMW I3 Owner Confronted with $71,000 Bill to Replace EV Battery
Agree, I wish the manufactures would do something to reign in these costs as it is doing a disservice to EVs.

Anyone on the fence about purchasing a BEV, a headline like this doesn't bode well.

mr337··on BMW I3 Owner Confronted with $71,000 Bill to Replace EV Battery
The only thing I can think of is the high voltage. I don't mind working with 220v but anything higher I tend to shy away with. I think some of the voltage systems in the battery packs can peak at 800v with most of them between 400v and 600v.
mr337··on Ask HN: Best open source and/or free EDA tooling
That is impressive!
mr337··on YouTransfer: Self-hosted file transfer and sharing solution
For one off for technical folks on both ends I like the magic-wormhole cli tool. https://github.com/magic-wormhole/magic-wormhole
mr337··on Aldi: Culture and Operations of a Hard Discounter (2023)
100% agree with #4. Enjoy it while it lasts though. All the Aldis near us for us have removed almost all of the checkout lines for the self check out. They are the worst. Imaging shopping for a large family with a fully loaded card and have to scan 100+ items.
mr337··on Dieselgate, but for trains – some heavyweight hardware hacking
100% agree with this. IMO there are a few efforts to modernize PLC programming but I feel like they are still stuck in the 1990s software development. Take a look at Codesys, got Git support few years ago and in very bad shape. How do you test your code, in the field or buy another Codesys testing plugin....which is in rough shape.

The issue is as machines get way more complex this issue gets worse. Also there are generations of PLC devs that still want to stick with ladder logic. Huge fragmentation.

mr337··on Still no love for WPA3 on the Raspberry Pi 5
There are a few products that take the RPI and turn it into a PLC. Here is an example of one [0].

mr337··on Americans falling behind on auto loan payments at record pace
> For many Americans, rising interest rates and high car prices have pushed their monthly payments above $1,000.

This is insane. I have never bought a new vehicle and never imagined this was the normal.

Edit: Finished a partial comment

mr337··on Americans falling behind on auto loan payments at record pace
> For many Americans, rising interest rates and high car prices have pushed their monthly payments above $1,000.

This is insane. I have never bought a new vehicle and thought having payments like this was the exception, not the norm.

mr337··on Show HN: Mango Mail – Affordable email host with unlimited addresses
I was thinking the same thing. Been using catch-all for about 7 years with zero issues about that.
mr337··on DRM-free e-books are a big deal (2019)
I was thinking the same thing. Either you go Amazon or you don't get it for some book. It is pretty dismal experience to be honest. Of course there are "other places" you can find them and not deal with any of the hassle. Search and download an ebook in about a minute.
mr337··on Monitor bandwidth usage with bandwhich (and build a snap package of it)
If it the popey from podcasts he used to work at Canonical. Actually looking at this confused, popey also came up with the snap removal tool that is handy https://github.com/popey/unsnap

Maybe he has a love hate relationship with snaps lol

Edit: added gh info

mr337··on TPM-backed Full Disk Encryption is coming to Ubuntu
Hard pass. I'm slowly been dumping Ubuntu due to the force snaps down your throat strategy they have. Still irritated I have to jump through hoops to get Firefox without a snap.
mr337··on US broadband grant rules shut out small ISPs and municipalities, advocates say
> 25gbit symmetrical available

Unless I was building a data center, think AWS/Azure, 25gb would not even be an option given I would want to burn money in the US.

I thought resort fees were a Las Vegas thing. Are other places doing it as well? I hope not as it get very expensive very quickly.

mr337··on Remote work requires communicating more, but less frequently
I feel the same, been remote for 15 years and all this reinventing stuff and challenges seem a little weird to me. There was remote work companies before COVID that had been learning through the challenges and optimizing for it.
mr337··on eSIM is altering how consumers interact with operators
Unfortunately it gets worse in other countries such as Mexico.

Most carriers will only provision a eSIM if you are on a contract through them. So lets say you are traveling for US to Mexico with an iPhone 14 (no physical sim) you are SOL. Extremely frustrating.

Only good news is once those contracts are up the used market I hope will force a change in this behavior.

mr337··on GPT-4 API General Availability
> My support requests about being charged for data I didn't have a chance to get have been unanswered for more than 5 weeks now.

I too had an issue and put in a request. Took about 2.5 months to get a response, so 5 weeks you are almost half way there.

mr337··on Terrible real estate agent photographs
I agree, it feels really odd that making a huge ticket item purchase, if something goes wrong the max liability it the inspection price. A drop in the bucket for some issues they should have brought to light.
mr337··on To save money on insurance, drivers agree to intrusive monitoring technology
It is the same in USA as well. After about 2-3 years one needs to yearly check out competitive rates.

I have a hunch that the risk is the longer they keep you the more likely to have an accident they have to pay out. So if you are a good customer, no claims for 3 years your engagement with them has been very profitable. If they keep you for another year and you have an claim then that engagement is unprofitable. Just a hunch as insurance math is complicated.

mr337··on Use of antibiotics in farming ‘endangering human immune system’
2-3 times a week is exactly what is recommended [1]. There are several heath issues with high red meat intake, the biggest and not so fun is Colon Cancer. I know two people that lost the battle with colcon cancer. It is a bugger to diagnose, treat, and recurrence.

mr337··on 916 Days of Emacs
I am in the same boat. Been working a lot with C++ recently and could not get debugging working. Threw in the towel and loaded vscode in about 2 hours had everything humming along and being productive.

I'm pretty sure I did the wrong thing and started with a setup like Spacemacs where random stuff would break and wouldn't even know where to look. Thought I can't seem to loose the muscle memory of vim bindings so evil is a must. On my next round will try dooms or centaur so I learn more under the hood. I do miss magit and helm.
