mquirion··on The Paradox of the Distance Runner
I run 5-6 times a week, and I've run many half and full marathons. I've never loved a run. I always love the feeling of being done with a run.
mquirion··on Popover API
Glad I'm not entirely alone in having this thought.
mquirion··on Ask HN: 9-yo son wants to build a game, I'm lost. What can I do?
Our local community college had a game dev camp in the summer, and that was a great start for my 9yo b/c it had a program for him to follow and kids like himself with whom to learn. Then this past holiday season we built a game together. I've built software for 23 years but never a game. He taught me so much! I taught him things like how to get something deployed so his buddies could see it online. Great fun.

And since the camp was thru the community college, it was very affordable. I think it was $150 for the week.

mquirion··on Kids’ competitive activities lead to debt for parents
It's probably all the "travel teams" pushing up the averages.

In my region travel teams for all sports are out of control. So long as you're willing to pay, your not-really-talented kid can play. And if your kid can't make the original travel team, or the one after that, or the one after that, someone is happy to fund their boat by creating another team.

mquirion··on The A.I. business influencer guys must be stopped
EMPs to kill the AI.

(I kid. (mostly))

mquirion··on AI clones teen girl’s voice in $1M kidnapping scam: ‘I’ve got your daughter’
This is very concerning, but I think my bigger, more immediate worry - and one I suspect will happen at a much larger scale in the US, if not the world - is the use of these tools in bullying, particularly among school-aged kids. The detrimental effects on kids (and thus, eventual adults) due to the misuse of these tools could be cataclysmic.
mquirion··on Where have all the sacked tech workers gone?
Not OP, but reasons that are pretty easy to imagine: - Living in America and suffering from either cancer, heart disease, or any chronic illness. - Have any number of children and not having a family member available to care for them before they are of school age and after school from Kindergarten until whatever local laws permit for the child to be home alone for a few hours a day. - Buying a home at the wrong time and taking an absolute bath on the "investment" once some unforseen circumstance forces you to sell the home while upside down on the mortgage. - Experiencing various forms of fraud. - Experiencing a lawsuit in America, whether you came out as the winner of said dispute or not. - Being 50 and having had the poor but not unreasonable "luck" of having worked for the wrong start-ups in 1999, 2007, and 2022.

Those are just top of mind.

mquirion··on Mercury Vault: money market fund and up to $3M in FDIC insurance
Exactly. It's an abject failure of journalism if a dozen national journalists aren't currently sorting out why this was the case.
mquirion··on Mercury Vault: money market fund and up to $3M in FDIC insurance
How is this different from an insured cash sweep that practically every other bank offers?
mquirion··on GitHub to lay off 10% and close all offices
This is right. The dot-com crash was an absolute crash. Not "we're laying off 5-15% of our company." It was a lot of "This media darling that had an IPO after 2 years of operations no longer exists."

In my social group of about 30 folks, I think at ~25 of us all experienced months of unemployment, at the least.

mquirion··on Ask HN: Where are all the parties?
Based on what you say about your parents, I have a feeling a lot of your success here is because you've grown up being shown the way. Congratulations. It's a helluva skill. Many, many people grew up without such examples.
mquirion··on How ‘One Hundred and One Dalmatians’ Saved Disney
I'm a bit of a Disney geek, not for their content, but for their business history. I got reading a bio on Walt years ago and was astonished by how much Disney really is a "start up" in many of the ways we think of them today. Walt and his people were wildly inventive and incredibly driven. And that inventiveness, though not always perfect, is still very much within the company's DNA today. And I think it plays as much a role today in Disney's dominance as their IP.
mquirion··on Apple asks staff to return to office 3 days a week starting in early September
You're forgetting the key bit: It was during a pandemic, and so especially during the first 6-12 months, people didn't feel safe being around others. They also often legally didn't have any space outside they could enjoy. Suburbs bring personal space and the legal right to be in your back yard.

A city is an entirely different experience when its residents are allowed to use parks and can enjoy dining out, walking to a market, strolling to the cinema, etc...

mquirion··on Covid vaccine: First ‘milestone’ vaccine offers 90% protection
It's a 2-dose regimen, needs to be stored at -70C, and Pfizer already said they'll only have 1.5B doses over the course of the next year.

It's going to be a very slow roll out.

mquirion··on Looking for Voter Fraud (In Old Elections) with Data Visualization
This is a really poor understanding of several things, including, for instance, how the USPS actually handled the ballots. This "randomly shuffled" thing is flat wrong.

There's actually a lot of really good data about how many mail ballots were requested in each state and the return rate. Many of the states even have data about which party did a better job returning the ballots.

https://electproject.github.io/Early-Vote-2020G/index.html

Several of the "modelers" out there used such data to basically know by ~1am Wednesday morning that Biden would likely win PA, for instance. It was just a matter of time.

mquirion··on Vilified early over Covid-19 strategy, Sweden seems to have scourge controlled
Wisconsin is already heading in that direction.

North Dakota has 22 ICU beds left in the state.

mquirion··on Discovery of a druggable pocket in the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein
NyQuil and Alka Seltzer would beg you not to kill the cash cows.

Plus NyQuil and AS can be produced and sold in such a way as to net a profit. We don't know that's the case for a cold cure.

mquirion··on Discovery of a druggable pocket in the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein
I almost never comment, but the answer here is simple: markets.

The common cold doesn't kill. There's almost no economic impetus for a cure. Note, I said "almost." There may be some, but there's still not enough to drive R&D in a corporate lab, and certainly not enough to drive policy in a government lab.

There are 100 other questions that would follow from science to logistic once you answer: Can we create a drug that kills infection in clinical tests?

mquirion··on It's not too late to ditch the ad-based business model and build a better web
And then the ISP just sells the data in a marketing profile.

mquirion··on It's not too late to ditch the ad-based business model and build a better web
Yeah. Your grocery stores have known more about you than anyone for decades. And it doesn't look like that's going to change anytime soon, frankly.
mquirion··on Twitter Pays $36 Million to Avoid IBM Patent Suit
Oh yeah. This sounds familiar (6 years at IBM). Very familiar. I wasn't even in the software division. I was in GBS. EVERY thing we did would get discussed and executives would ALWAYS ask if it could be patented. Half the time stupid, normal stuff like making AJAX requests to improve a web page's UX or embedding a browser in some piece of software would be cause for execs to encourage us to try to get a patent for it. It's insane. IBM will one day be the world's largest non-practicing entity.
mquirion··on My Latte is Worth It - No Fun Allowed
This isn't a trade-off that most consumers would consider. The "it's just the cost of a coffee" pitch is a marketing pitch for the mass market. And when the mass market hears it, they'll buy it on a whim. Essentially the same pitch has worked at grocery store checkout lanes for decades.
mquirion··on Show HN: My friends' new Flower E-comm Service
I'm the OP. Just wanted to share a site some old college buddies started. I think it's a very nice setup. They control the supply chain entirely. They have both an on-demand and subscription model.

Personally I like it b/c I can get flowers sent to my wife regularly. And I really like that they wont resort to the old bait-and-switch that I always see from the likes of FTD where the advertised of listed flowers are $19, but the eventual price somehow reaches $60.
