Hi there! I'm a CS student at the University of Washington.

mpim··on Engineers in San Francisco Have Mediocre Take Home Pay
This is based on the latest U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data: https://www.mytrove.com/t/cheddar-counter/methodology
mpim··on Yahoo is now giving eight weeks of paternity leave
Facebook gives 4 months of paternal & maternal leave.

I really appreciate it being equal because then both men & women on my team are absent for the same amount of time (and there's no stigma about taking all of it)

mpim··on Facebook has 1 billion monthly active users
And do you still log into those accounts every month?

Probably better to link to the original article instead of a summary: https://www.facebook.com/notes/facebook-engineering/n/101508...
mpim··on Tools for startups along their lifetime
I second the wiki suggestion.

My experience, thus far, with Google Docs:

- Click on link and browse around a bit

- As usual, use backspace key to go back to HN

- Nothing happens, tap backspace key a few more times out of habit

- Accidentally delete most of the presentation

mpim··on AskHN: Should us youngins be taking a Java class as a first programming class?
I was talking to some friends at Berkeley and apparently they're learning Scheme. My first reaction was "meh, that's not very practical". However, I can guess as to why they chose it:

a) It levels the playing field for people who have and haven't programmed before (a much smaller percentage of new students have probably had previous experience with Scheme)

b) It forces students to take on a new way of thinking.

As some other people have said, it doesn't really matter what language you learn. It's important that you learn to think and solve problems.
