mperham··on Socialist ends by market means: A history
99% of zoning is just class-based segregation.
mperham··on Copenhagenize Index 2025: The Global Ranking of Bicycle-Friendly Cities
No, but I think it’s because e-bikes have only come into widespread use in the last decade. It takes decades to build high quality infrastructure and those countries are the ones that could make bikes work for the general population before e-bikes were available.
mperham··on Copenhagenize Index 2025: The Global Ranking of Bicycle-Friendly Cities
Are you a time traveler from 2010 who's never heard of e-bikes?
mperham··on What they don't tell you about maintaining an open source project
Really: add a zero to your price. These companies burn millions on procurement bureaucracy. Make them pay for your misery.
mperham··on I am stepping down as the CEO of Mastodon
He's stepping down as CEO. He'll still contribute. Most gifted technical people are not strong organizational leaders so it's mature to recognize your own limits and find someone else who can fill that role.
mperham··on Minisforum Stuffs Entire Arm Homelab in the MS-R1
More than anything, reading this review acts as an ad for the Mac Mini M4. $600, with performance and efficiency well beyond the other options.
mperham··on The Rust Foundation Maintainers Fund
It's interesting to note that this doesn't actually discuss any funding details. Who, how much, when, how? The devil is always in the details.
mperham··on Tiny electric motor can produce more than 1,000 horsepower
There’s no area in the world that allows e-bikes with more than 750w motors. A 3kw motor is illegal (cf Surron), unless you are talking about an e-moped requiring registration.
mperham··on ICE and CBP agents are scanning faces on the street to verify citizenship
I presume this is powered by data collected by the face scanners at airports when you go thru security?
mperham··on Rivian's TM-B electric bike
You build bigger lanes. Paris and London are quickly learning this lesson.
mperham··on Scaling request logging with ClickHouse, Kafka, and Vector
Seems weird not to use Redis as the buffering layer + minutely cron job. Seems a lot simpler than installing Kafka + Vector.
mperham··on We found a bug in Go's ARM64 compiler
Did they ever explain why netlink was involved? Or was that a red herring?
mperham··on We found a bug in Go's ARM64 compiler
The frame pointer was updated non-atomically in two asm ops. An async interruption between the two ops would lead to a corrupt frame pointer.
mperham··on Gem.coop
Well maintained? Rubygems has had no commits in the last 10 days and that's not a good sign. I don't think you can find a window with no commits for 10 days in its 15+ year history.

History has shown over and over that when a for-profit org takes over public infrastructure, maintenance is cut to the bone.

mperham··on Why I'm not rushing to take sides in the RubyGems fiasco
The eventual rate paid by Ruby Together settled on $150/hr and has remained that amount for the last decade. Justin’s data is far out of date.
mperham··on Shopify, pulling strings at Ruby Central, forces Bundler and RubyGems takeover
Correct. Thank you for the kind words. If you want to support me, support Sidekiq and Faktory.
mperham··on Microsoft has urged its employees on H-1B and H-4 visas to return immediately
[flagged]
mperham··on Ruby Central's Attack on RubyGems [pdf]
I clarified the toot.
mperham··on EU court rules nuclear energy is clean energy
You should check out these things called batteries.
mperham··on U.S. Added 911,000 Fewer Jobs in the Year Ended in March
I will point out that our labor data can no longer be trusted as the organization is no longer politically neutral. Pushing the jobs record down means more blame for Biden and a much lower bar for Trump to meet in order to "improve" future jobs numbers.

> Trump ordered McEntarfer's removal on August 1 after data showed a surprise weakening in the U.S. labor market last month. The BLS employment report revealed meaningful revisions to job figures for the prior two months that raised investor worries that the Federal Reserve may need to play catch-up with interest rate cuts.

mperham··on U.S. Emissions Rise 4.2%, China's Fall 2.7%
> a boom in solar that saw the country [China] add 92 gigawatts of capacity—that’s 92 billion watts—in a single month in May, compared to all-time U.S. installations of 134 GW.

That's an insane stat. China added 92GW of solar in May 2025 alone.

mperham··on Amtrak's New Acela Trains Are Here. They're Moving Slower Than the Old Ones
> cheap and easy travel across town (in your car)

It's only cheap and easy if you discount omnipresent traffic jams, 50,000 deaths per year, ever-worsening climate change and the inability to walk/bike anywhere anymore.

Aside from that, it only costs the average American $1,000/mo to keep that cheap and easy transportation!

mperham··on Nitro: A tiny but flexible init system and process supervisor
I think I would have gone with nitr0.
mperham··on GitHub is no longer independent at Microsoft after CEO resignation
I guess you speak for everyone?

I very much do look very negatively on Microsoft as a collaborator with modern fascist regimes, along with Meta, Palantir, X, etc.

mperham··on Ask HN: How can ChatGPT serve 700M users when I can't run one GPT-4 locally?
Have they considered replacing their engineers with AI?
mperham··on Torqued Accelerator Using Radiation from the Sun (Tars) for Interstellar Payload
He’s an incredible scientist and educator. His back catalog of videos is well worth watching.
mperham··on Two narratives about AI
One could mostly ignore Bitcoin. AI usage and its network effects are much more widespread and often place additional work on me, even if I choose not to use AI directly. Incorrect issues or pull requests, unmaintainable heaps of code, etc.
mperham··on Ask HN: Startup getting spammed with PayPal disputes, what should we do?
Same here. Our nail salon often has a McLaren parked in front.
mperham··on Trump administration halts Harvard's ability to enroll international students
It doesn’t matter, the damage is done. If you’re an international student, are you going to risk an El Salvador gulag?
mperham··on O(n) vs. O(n^2) Startups
Don’t forget about us O(1) solo entrepreneurs!
