mpalczewski··on Monster gravitational waves spotted for first time
Gravitational waves warp space/time. so the distance between two points will be slightly longer/shorter.
mpalczewski··on Apollo will close down on June 30th
Patagonia is pushing polyester with its associated micro-plastics, instead of the renewable natural fibers that they were using before like wool. Good, evil, depends on who is counting.
mpalczewski··on Chegg stock sinks after CEO says ChatGPT hurt growth
They had bad numbers and the ceo went, fuck the stock price, I need everyone to know this wasn’t my fault. I had no faith in management after that. I sold all my chgg stock.
mpalczewski··on Classic fountain pens
I would not reccomend TWSBI for beginners, I find that the nibs are way to finicky. I needed to tune mine a bit before it wrote well. Pilot and Lamy are great out of the box.
mpalczewski··on Ask HN: How can techies influence companies to stop implementing SMS/phone 2FA
Techies can best influence by understanding why sms otp is popular and come up with something better.

Not only do you need to understand what shortcoming sms has, but non cynically understand why other solutions are worse.

mpalczewski··on I use a Raspberry Pi as my daily computer
I bought a used nuc computer on eBay for less than $100 recently. It’s much more powerful than a pi. Used computers are some of the best bargains now.
mpalczewski··on US economy returned to growth last quarter, expanding 2.6%
the mandate is maximum employment and 0% inflation.
mpalczewski··on Write Like You Talk (2015)
As a reader I would prefer the writer not repeat themselves and write less, rather than try to find some fancy way of not “sounding” repetitive, but in reality finding yet another way of repeating. I prefer actual repetition to that.

More precise words aren’t always better either. Having someone easily grasp what you are saying works much better for conveying information.

Complicated writing is lazy writing. “If I had more time, I would have written a shorter letter.”

mpalczewski··on More U.S. companies charging employees for job training if they quit
That’s not inconsistent with survivorship bias.
mpalczewski··on More U.S. companies charging employees for job training if they quit
Probably a case of survivorship bias. Tools that already lasted this long are likely built better.
mpalczewski··on Aerc – a pretty good (terminal) email client
I love it, answers the question. “What would vim be like as a web client” I use it regularly.
mpalczewski··on We should measure well-being instead of failing to measure economic productivity
That post wasn't meant in that way. I'm a supporter of decentralization, a strong local government and a weak federal government (city/county > state > federal), but I wanted to demonstrate how difficult it is to compare different countries. Which was evidently worthy of a downvote .
mpalczewski··on We should measure well-being instead of failing to measure economic productivity
only applies when countries have similar demographics. e.g. most countries are a magnitude smaller than the US(except for China, India). Most countries have a much more homogeneous population(e.g. China, India). Best comparison I can think of is EU vs US, and if you can show that Europeans are happier, then that calls for a very limited central government that is not elected, and states can model themselves after European countries. Scale and demographics are important.
mpalczewski··on What does the ??!??! operator do in C?
Why would you do this? Some weird insecurity?
mpalczewski··on LAPD Officer Killed During Training Exercise Was Investigating Cops About Rape
What's the "Big Lie"?
mpalczewski··on Dextromethorphan-Bupropion in Major Depressive Disorder: Controlled Trial
TLDR: Have some cough syrup with your Bupropion (anti-depressant) for increased efficacy.
mpalczewski··on Ask HN: Do you still buy physical tech books like “Learn Rust” or “Learn Go”?
I do both.

Fiction: almost exclusively ebook. Sometimes there's a special edition that is hard cover and has pages that feel nicely in your hand. I'll buy that. The experience becomes more than just words. In general if it is just words read in order no flipping back and forth, just read the story ebook works really well. You get to read at a comfortable font size, don't have to keep the book open(cheaply made paperbacks can be annoying, imagine reading war and peace or atlas shrugged), don't have to worry about a book mark. It estimates for you how much time left in the chapter. It's rather nice.

Coding: Almost exclusively physical. Code listing don't work that well on a kindle, or iPad. It's nice to read a little bit, go look at the code, read a little more. ebooks suck for this.

Recipe books, reference material, also physical. flipping through an ebook doesn't always work well.

Non-fiction: Mixed. For expediency e-books. To serve as a reminder to read, physical books. If I just read a topic, want to read more on that same topic I'd rather not loose momentum and go straight to an ebook. If I'm traveling, I also prefer an ebook, extra weight to carry isn't always great. A physical book is an object though and experience and sometimes that can be helpful.

mpalczewski··on The Immorality of ‘The Godfather’
Underlying biases are fine, even better when explicitly stated. It’s writing everything like it’s propaganda that’s an issue. Not everything needs to be an advertisement. Not everything needs to have something to argue against. When it does acknowledging that there might be another point of view, might be another set of values, or just understanding the best argument against you shows thought.
mpalczewski··on Note-taking isn't rocket science
For computer note taking, I love vim wiki. I used to use a Google doc but I really like how quick it is to open and navigate in vim.

For paper note taking I like a good notebook with a fountain pen. Writing has become enjoyable once I re-discovered fountain pens for myself.

mpalczewski··on The Immorality of ‘The Godfather’
It's a flaw in the way people have been taught to write and analyze writing.

You don't see people using the steel man very often.

mpalczewski··on How should we handle an over-productive employee?
The comments. The idea of someone doing things really well triggers tons of insecurities.

"Until that guy burns out and crashes."

"Are they abusing drugs?"

"Bob is doing things without really understanding what he’s doing"

"Bob is working far beyond what he’s billing"

"To me, this sounds like the “smart guy” who if left unchecked will leave a trail of destruction."

mpalczewski··on AirPods Pro (2nd Generation)
Apple creates the problem by leaving bluetooth on in the first place. When I close the lid on my laptop, no power, no external monitor, I would expect it to be sleeping. This is also a security issue. Thieves can detect that you left your laptop in the trunk of your car.
mpalczewski··on AirPods Pro (2nd Generation)
This was why I originally loved my airpods pro. Then it started going random and they no longer would connect to the device I expect. Much of the problem is that for some reason even if the laptop lid is closed apple's laptop still connect to your headphones. Right now my bose work better than the apple stuff, they connect to my laptop and headphones and music plays out of which ever one is going at the time.
mpalczewski··on On Corpspeak
You could just substitute "ask" with "request", and it's less corp speak but has all the same connotations. It looks more like tribal signaling.
mpalczewski··on On Corpspeak
you can be neutral without corp speak. "Steve, what did you learn from your recent project?"

mpalczewski··on Thoughts on the potato diet
> It is completely orthogonal to weight but insulin resistance makes it much easier to gain even more weight.

Insulin sensitive women on the high carb diet lost nearly double the weight as insulin sensitive women on the low-carb diet.

Similarly, insulin resistant women lost twice the weight on the low-carb diet as on the high carb diet.

https://bodyrecomposition.com/fat-loss/insulin-sensitivity-a...

> It is entirely possible to be obese without insulin resistance and to be skinny with insulin resistance.

This is what I said

>> Exercise does this most effectively, loosing weight also does this. Low carb diets don't do this directly, only through weight loss.

A more precise way: A caloric deficit can also increase insulin sensitivity.

mpalczewski··on Thoughts on the potato diet
> Indeed it is, and the solution to managing hunger (i.e. returning your whole insulin and leptin system to a more optimal baseline) is NOT going for a 90% carbohydrate diet.

Leptin system returns to a more optimal baseline with weight loss.

Insulin returns to a more optimal baseline by increasing insulin sensitivity. Exercise does this most effectively, loosing weight also does this. Low carb diets don't do this directly, only through weight loss.

Managing hunger is managing your dopamine response. Eating nothing but one food, will make you very bored of your food. You won't be looking for food as entertainment, stress relief, or a cure for boredom(dopamine). You will only eat for true hunger(lack of dopamine can feel similar).

mpalczewski··on Ask HN: How do you deal with managers/customers questioning your estimates?
In that case one must be assertive. Speaking this way does not come naturally especially to engineers.

You don't have to articulate it clearly, you don't have to know why you are making the estimate you are making. It's ok for management to push, in fact it is their job.

I suggest this book. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004IK8Q22

mpalczewski··on Ask HN: Why do I struggle to follow corporate meetings?
> Does anyone struggle with this, or do you have any recommendations for people like me who do struggle to understand what's happening in corporate meetings?

Your brain is functioning well, especially the filtering mechanism. There's nothing going on in those meetings. They are boring. I don't go, get work done and nobody complains.

In general meetings with more than 6 people(this is already too many) are not worth going to.
