mountainriver··on Anthropic surpasses OpenAI to become most valuable AI startup
Anthropic believes they are the only people who should control AI.

That alone is terrible. Also OpenAI has done actual work to try and mitigate the downstream negatives effects with UBI experiments.

Sam isn’t perfect but it’s deeply unclear that he’s worse

mountainriver··on Anthropic surpasses OpenAI to become most valuable AI startup
The idea that intelligence will be commoditized is completely counterintuitive. It comes from the belief that it can’t exceed our own. This is almost certainly not true at the limit. There will likely by many super intelligences like we see life in the wild
mountainriver··on Anthropic surpasses OpenAI to become most valuable AI startup
100%

The belief structures here are really interesting. Blind tests would likely illuminate a lot of why people think that

mountainriver··on WH proposes rules giving political appointees final approval on research grants
That’s why they put on such a big parade for him. Trump is essentially the fulfillment of their strategy, and is easily played by stroking his ego
mountainriver··on Headway Therapy Patients Forced to Scan Their Faces to Keep Getting Care
That is unbelievably terrifying
mountainriver··on Announcing Rust 1.96
With AI assisted coding I imagine no one will notice

It’s a new world for breaking things

mountainriver··on Anthropic raises $65B in Series H funding at $965B post-money valuation
Huh I thought AI didn’t have any use cases /s
mountainriver··on Show HN: Hallucinate – Massively Multiplayer Online Rave
Most raves are just EDM shows now. In the 90s they were secret warehouse parties, and instead of Molly it was “Ecstasy” Molly can be an unbelievable experience but please be very careful if you have mental illness.
mountainriver··on Roku OS's home screen now features a large, permanent ad
If they have to do this (which I doubt), they should have just made it a feed. I wouldn’t mind seeing the latest shows out with an understanding that a lot of the spots were paid for
mountainriver··on I think Anthropic and OpenAI have found product-market fit
CATIA with plugins can go up to 100k a year. That’s what we currently pay
mountainriver··on I think Anthropic and OpenAI have found product-market fit
How could extremely capable artificial brains ever pay for themselves?
mountainriver··on Use boring languages with LLMs
I think that's fair, but I honestly can't tell you if I'm writing python or rust anymore. When I review I just ask Claude to add comments to all the code to make things clear as I review
mountainriver··on The VibeSec Reckoning
We do it, it’s fine. From what I can tell just about every company does it now.

Review your code, have integration tests, rollout feature incrementally with feature flags.

All the things we previously did for all the really bad human developers which AI is way better than

mountainriver··on Use boring languages with LLMs
Why choose a significantly worse language when you are writing it in the same English either way.

It’s increasingly obvious that whole swaths of developers will just continue using the language they did before LLMs “just cause”

It’s more identity based at this point. My LLMs write Rust for me and I couldn’t tell you the difference outside of it being way faster and more reliable

mountainriver··on Phantasy Star IV – 1993 Developer Interviews
How can I play with you all!?
mountainriver··on Phantasy Star IV – 1993 Developer Interviews
Phantasy Star Online was so far ahead of its time. I remember connecting it up to my early modem via phone jack.

Gameplay was amazing, story and graphics were great, the community was really fun.

Oddly it’s also the last MMO I ever really played. As I got into high school I focused more on music and whenever I would try a new MMO game they never felt nearly as good as PSO.

mountainriver··on Jensen–Shannon Divergence
Why not use this instead of KL in reinforcement learning?
mountainriver··on The Eternal Sloptember
My guess is the models just continue to get better and better

When I got into agentic coding a year or two ago I was sure it was only good at autocomplete. Something happened earlier this year where the models hit a new level of capability.

Everyone I know now just does agentic coding, and it’s really amazing. I think we should just try pushing this as far as we can possibly go, it really feels like the acceleration of the human race is upon us.

mountainriver··on Migrating from Go to Rust
I love Go and used to write it heavily for anything non LLM based.

Now that we have agentic coding I just write everything in Rust and couldn’t be happier. The struggle with rust was writing it, go was made so it was easy to write for mid level engineers. Now that we have agentic coding I’m not sure Go’s value prop holds up anymore

My rust services have been nothing short of amazing from a performance and reliability perspective

mountainriver··on Was my $48K GPU server worth it?
Running LLMs on Macs is still terribly slow. They simply lack the optimizations other platforms have.

An RTX 6000 pro Blackwell is a pretty good card

mountainriver··on Python 3.15: features that didn't make the headlines
Same, I’m not sure how Python survives this outside of machine learning.

All of our services we were our are significantly faster and more reliable. We used Rust, it wasn’t hard to do

mountainriver··on Learnings from 100K lines of Rust with AI (2025)
I’ve been writing almost exclusively Rust with LLMs and rarely ever hit this. I guess maybe the kind of work you are doing?

mountainriver··on ESP-EEG is an affordable 8-channel biosensing board
Anything less than a 32 channel system is mostly a toy. You can stack them but synchronizing the clocks is hard

mountainriver··on If AI writes your code, why use Python?
or the language was fundamentally designed to make mid level engineers more productive...
mountainriver··on I'm going back to writing code by hand
Writing machine learning kernels. Writing low level geometry libraries. Writing compilers...
mountainriver··on I'm going back to writing code by hand
Certainly not back to hand crafted code unless you want to be left in the dust
