mouldysammich··on Spotify Optimized the Largest Dataflow Job Ever for Wrapped 2020
listenbrainz has gotten pretty good in the last while for keeping track of your music stats. Its got a nice weekly stats page etc. Its also not ad laden like last.fm
mouldysammich··on Emacs minor mode for d20 tabletop roleplaying games
I use emacs for keeping track of my character sheet/notes for a dnd session. its pretty good, i just want an org exporter of 5e.tools or 5ewiki or something to have all my spells.
mouldysammich··on Pidgin – A Universal Chat Client
Chatty, from librem uses libpurple, which pidgin is built on, for its sms app so it also supports xmpp, i dont think itd be hard to support the other services libpurple supports, i found it pretty easy to add purple-facebook support
mouldysammich··on Show HN: Beeper – All Your Chats in One App
I was also a little confused, you'll get an email in a bit explaining that there is a queue for signing up and they'll inform you when you're in and that kinda thing.
mouldysammich··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (January 2021)
Where would be sensible to apply? I'd be very interested.
mouldysammich··on Show HN: Thruhikes – A list of long distance hikes around the world
ooh cool, I hadn't seen this before, but its enlightened me of several hikes near me! Exciting!
mouldysammich··on Amazon Location Service
Pelias is great, I ran it + open route service + a custom router all on one server for 30€ a month + a few other non maps related services. It made for a surprisingly coherent maps experience.
mouldysammich··on Gmail having issues
yep, i've found it to be extremely worthwhile having your own domain. Its more effort but once its setup its way easier to avoid lock in to a company.

I also run my own and its been easier than expected, especially with maddy: https://github.com/foxcpp/maddy

mouldysammich··on AWS CloudShell
Tramp will run whatever commands you want to run on remote server if you're running commands with `M-!`

I use it for work sometimes, that + vterm and ssh makes for a fairly pleasant remote editing experience in emacs. LSP even works over tramp (kinda)

mouldysammich··on Sponsoring Open Source Developers
That is very cool of you to do, and I'm sure goes well appreciated!
mouldysammich··on Facebook being investigated in Germany for tying Oculus use to Facebook accounts
I really despise that you need to login for it, especially as it used to be optional. I wanted to try remote play on a psvita[1] but did not want to so someone has made a thing to let you use geforce experience without a login[2] and i found it worked reasonably well.

mouldysammich··on Rga: Ripgrep, but also search in PDFs, E-Books, Office documents, zip, tar.gz
https://github.com/tesseract-ocr/tesseract seems to be written in c++ not python
mouldysammich··on Pinecil: Portable USB-C RISC-V soldering iron
Soldering irons generally are not expensive. Antex which is a fairly reputable soldering iron brand (as far as i understand) sell them as low as 10$ on amazon
mouldysammich··on Pine64 November Update: KDE PinePhone CE and a Peek into the Future
I think dino has patches for it to run better on small devices. the default texting app runs on libpurple so it has support for jabber, i dont know if it constitutes decent though, I have nobody to talk to on jabber :(
mouldysammich··on Apple unveils M1, its first system-on-a-chip for portable Mac computers
Very cool, thank you.
mouldysammich··on Apple unveils M1, its first system-on-a-chip for portable Mac computers
WRT the pinebook, i didnt know it could do that. can it be done at runtime or do you have to change it at boot time?
mouldysammich··on GitHub Source Code Leak
His product is, however, free and open-source, which follows that goal of avoiding centralization of free open-source software.
mouldysammich··on Show HN: Greg – a simple “cal” clone written in C
Semi unrelated, but I had never seen that webasembly site wapm, its pretty cool!
mouldysammich··on Facebook Container for Firefox
Itll show a color next to the tab to indicate that its in a container
mouldysammich··on Krita 4.4.0
Its a painting program not an image editing program. they dont compete.
mouldysammich··on Oculus Quest 2
I used ALVR and found it quite easy to get setup with + its FOSS which I prefer

https://github.com/JackD83/ALVR is the fork to use, its instructions arent super indepth but I got there its not too hard. And then steam views it like a regular steam vr headset. Its pretty cool.

mouldysammich··on Oculus Quest 2
the whole mandatory facebook thing has made me want to sell my quest. Its a shame, I think its truely the best device out there. I was able to play have life alyx totally wirelessly and enjoy the full experience, and I dont think there is anything close out there to emulate this.
mouldysammich··on Statement Regarding the Zen Programming Language
This is the purpose of the FSF as far as I understand. One of their goals is enforcement of the GPL
mouldysammich··on Implement BeamAsm – A JIT for Erlang/OTP
I imagine developers as experienced as the creators of this evaluated the C options and decided C++ was in fact not more of a detriment than a gain.

It has its problems but blindly being anti C++ is silly.

mouldysammich··on Reddit app got 50M downloads by making mobile web experience miserable
there is also https://github.com/ccrama/Slide Its very nice.
mouldysammich··on Nessie – Lightweight Web Browser
itd be neat if microsoft opened up their web engines now that they've moved to blink.
mouldysammich··on Embrace, extend, and finally extinguish – Microsoft plays their hand
There are an awful lot of people in the comments here calling this an advertisement and being upset about it. How are those that are upset about it not upset that this is an obvious conflict of interest and advertisement for microsofts github platform.
mouldysammich··on WireGuard support in Mikrotik RouterOS v7.1beta2
its very handy, I like having a gui to set wg up.
mouldysammich··on Placeholder – Offline Coarse Geocoder Backed by SQLite
I can attest to pelias (the regular fullsize version of this) running quite well on a 16gb ram server, it was just one country but the server had many other services on it so it might work for you depends on your usecase I suppose.
mouldysammich··on NetSurf, a multi-platform web browser
I've played around with NetSurf a little for fun recently. It performed surprisingly well on a few of the sites i use. old.reddit, hackernews both rendered ok with some issues, also miniflux which i use for rss reading worked well too.

I think its a very cool and admirable project
