motles··on Show HN: A self-hosted, AWS-based secrets manager
Feedback: you need to state very clearly, high up on the page WHY someone would want to use a non-managed solution vs SecretsManager or SSM Parameter Store.

The website has way too much information that is basic credentials store 101. I know why I’d want a secrets manager already.

and if you are targeting users/builders on AWS (which you are implicitly if you can’t run off AWS) you need to be clear as to why anyone would waste time with an unmanaged solution

motles··on A case for moving away from the cloud and embracing local storage solutions
> a one-time payment for an external hard drive may be a more economical alternative over time.

If you care about your data, you are playing with fire.

Drives do not store data forever. Data must be read and rewritten occasionally to maintain it, from old media past its lifespan to new media.

Good storage software, with the ability to write your data with either mirroring or striping of some sort is able to routinely scan your entire data set and detect bit rot - and rewrite sectors that contain bitrotted data to new media.

You simply do not get that level of protection buying a single external hardrive alone.

Most enterprise storage systems do this. Most cloud storage does this. It’s worth paying for if you have data that is valuable.

Uh.

23 billion was the gross profit

12 billion operating income

-1.9 billion net income

Ie they lost money in 2022 when all was said and done.

Also no company that has taken outside money from investors can just give their profits to employees and not share the profits back to the investors.

No investor would ever give money to a company where their share of the profits - which they were duly owed because they took a risk and put money into an enterprise - is not returned to them - and instead shared to employees because it’s the righteous thing to do.

No CEO or CFO would keep their jobs for long if they did this.

That’s just not how capitalism works.

motles··on Ask HN: Is there a future in which password management is sane?
I think you’re pointing out a problem which mobile has begun trying to solve - passwords are probably not the right long term solution to authentication for the majority of the population or usecases - the right solution is something more like an automatic biometric scan that doesn’t require remembering anything - just presenting yourself ie. Fingerprint scan, retina scan, faceID etc.

Devices which support these authentication method need to become ubiquitous and their APIs need to be open and widely integrated with, including by web applications and laptop/desktop applications.

There are some hard problems to solve in the way.

You either need to make a central authority that manages the scan data or you need to figure out a way to cryptographically hash the output of a biometric scan such that it can be reliably checked against a stored value in a database. Or perhaps our AI experts on HN could comment on if there is a not too computationally expensive verification method…

But it would be nice. Overtime users could remember less.

motles··on Rancher Desktop, a Docker Desktop Replacement
Can you clarify? Like are people saying that Dropbox is easy to replace with OSS? Like ALL it’s functionality?
motles··on Rancher Desktop, a Docker Desktop Replacement
Is this true? I know developers that pay for IDEs, managed git, jira, and CI/CD services. Developers that use Postgres might pay for postico etc.
motles··on Fired NY credit union employee nukes data in revenge
I feel like this shouldn’t be a problem for most enterprises. File storage solutions can easily be purchased or set up with automated snapshotting mechanisms.

Even if she were to wipe all the data and the bank just held a once a week or once a day snapshot on a Qumulo or Isilon or Netapp, that shit is reversible within 48 hours max.

Another way to look at it is - you can work on those SQL queries and deep technical problems, but you can't stop short at checking in the code and not telling anyone, or only mentioning it to your colleagues for engineering cred. Show people the performance impact, how much better the user experience is now. Especially those who are likely to trumpet it to the rest of the company (managers, sales people, marketing people, executives).

I used to be an engineer and now I'm a product manager (since 1 year ago). It's so funny being on the otherside and seeing how engineers claim "well not everything is demo-able, it's hard to quantify customer value" and in reality, I'd say 80% of the stuff they work on could be explained in a way that still has a visible outcome to me and to customers. But they want to write user stories like "As a developer, I want to refactor the controller manager to use new rust traits from the bind system blah blee bloo". But then during demo time, they show that actually now, a new feature that wasn't working before now works.

Guys. Lead with what you are going to actually change in the product that you can show me, not the technical change you are making. I know it's hard to get out of the details/weeds - but if you can uplevel a bit to what is going to be different when I'm done with this - sell that!

motles··on A Slow-Motion Trainwreck Facing the Meal-Kit Industry
The one difference between Groupon and meal kit services to me is that the meal kit services actually provide value over and over for something I actually need to do every day, 3 times a day: Eat.

If I don't use the meal kits, that's fine, but I'm just going elsewhere - restaurants, delivery, take-out, grocery store.

I don't need discount yoga classes or buy one get one froyo coupons every day. You don't need discounts to survive. You can just buy less. Discounts are not a commodity that I wish to purchase often. I have used groupon once, and have been innundated ever since with constant spam about new deals for things which sound like good deals but probably I wouldn't even give them a second look at full price. So I don't bother. I don't need half that stuff anyway.

I hope meal kit services continue to thrive, despite negativity from investors. They are a service that I truly value and will probably keep my subscription to BA going until BA service quality drops or the food stops being as good. So far, they haven't done either.

But for god sakes BA, EASY ON THE GARLIC. You don't need to send me a whole bulb every time when the recipe just needs 2 cloves.
