mostertoaster··on Ask HN: Anyone working 4 day week here, as an employee?
I think in some sense it feels like we want to live off the fat of the land so to speak.

And this totally doable, and I think a lot of people could live in leisure for quite a while.

At some point though unless we live much more nomadically and never storing up for the future, we will need to make sacrifices in life again for some higher goal, to those who come after us in order to once again have the fat of the land.

This is just the way of life though.

mostertoaster··on Ask HN: Anyone working 4 day week here, as an employee?
So this life of total leisure is the thing we all want, and it is for that reason the capitalist system seems to work. Someone has to provide the labor that allows you to continue in a life of leisure.
mostertoaster··on Ask HN: Folks who were around the 2008 Recession
The last one sucked, having graduated from college in 07, and buying a condo in 08, I felt the pain of it.

This one does not feel so bad, but the things that have happened leading up to it feel much worse, and we might look back and say at this time we shouldn’t have even called it a recession, because it might get far worse.

You can’t just shut down the economy and give people tons of free money and not have there be serious consequences.

All we can do now is try to do hard things and make sacrifices that will enable our grandchildrens’ lives better.

mostertoaster··on The Case for C# and .NET
> My hope is that .NET and C# have a resurgence as .NET 6 rounds the corner. With .NET 6, C# 10, and minimal APIs, the language feels more modern than ever and is the perfect gateway from TypeScript/JavaScript on the server to .NET.

Oh please please please let this come true so I can write c# on the backend again. I love typescript because it made JavaScript (i.e. front end web) so much less shit to work on, and I’d prefer it over ruby or python backends still, but c# hits such a sweet spot of ease to write, while still remaining relatively performant.

Go and rust are probably better for certain applications, but c# would be light years ahead of things like ruby or python.

mostertoaster··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
In 2016, Republicans who went to church weekly were far less likely to vote for Trump, than those who rarely or never went.

That means the lower taxes and less regulations were likely desired for their own sake not as a trade off.

Christians crazily believe Christ was conceived by the Holy Spirit and was God incarnate within the womb. As crazy as that may be, it logically follows they would adamantly be against ending human lives before they’re born.

mostertoaster··on Ask HN: CS grad who barely knows any CS
Eh, you probably know more about CS than me, and I’m a well paid software developer.

Get a foot in the door, and be humble and willing to learn, and you’ll do fine.

mostertoaster··on California Sends Democrats and the Nation a Message on Crime
You should probably read some different news sources.

The right hasn’t changed much other than they care less about religion/morality than before.

I’d say leftists tend to be more authoritarian and less liberal in general than the right. Though the right is also full of the authoritarians who just want it for their side.

What the political leaders love is when all the problems are because of the other side. Two wings one bird though.

mostertoaster··on Tell HN: Job interview canceled due to looming recession
But would’ve they predicted the that value of those 300B US dollars would be worth so much less?

Many tech companies during COVID gained legitimate value, just like many housing markets, but most the increase in their US dollar price was simply the value of the dollar being less.

mostertoaster··on Apple Shipped Me a 79-Pound iPhone Repair Kit to Fix a 1.1-Ounce Battery
Yeah if I still lived in Seattle area and drove to work I’d want an automatic.

As it is I don’t deal with traffic so a manual is a more fun “tool” to drive.

mostertoaster··on Apple Shipped Me a 79-Pound iPhone Repair Kit to Fix a 1.1-Ounce Battery
I would definitely buy a manual if I could. Just more fun to drive. I think Honda civic’s lowest model might still have one. Not sure of anything else.
mostertoaster··on Passenger with “no idea how to fly” lands plane after pilot incapacitated
This is just awesome.
mostertoaster··on NY Senate Bill S5474 proposing a universal single payer health plan for NYers
Well maybe our bureaucrats are simply better at getting paid.

Still the healthcare issues being fixed with more government intervention is like someone breaking your leg then giving you crutches and saying “where would you be without me”.

mostertoaster··on NY Senate Bill S5474 proposing a universal single payer health plan for NYers
Crazy healthcare costs are the result of government intervention back in the 30s, and I’m doubtful they will actually be able to lower overall costs. Single payer has the advantage of being able to negotiate the costs for a much larger volume, but my guess it won’t be enough to cover the cost of bureaucrats to administer it.

Still I’m all for them trying it, if it fails miserably and the “free” healthcare leads to never being able to see the doctor and costing more, then everyone else can stop trying to emulate it. If it succeeds and actually saves money and still provides good healthcare, then we might be able to try it at a larger scale.

mostertoaster··on Mapping the “catscape” formed by a population of pet cats with outdoor access
Yeah our cat killed too many birds so we put the bird bait (bird feeder) away.

Still kills a good amount of mice though which is great.

mostertoaster··on Ask HN: It's 2022. Where should I direct the youths to learn about programming?
What is a four letter word that starts with “P”? That’s a big reason I’d guess.
mostertoaster··on DHS Creating Disinformation Governance Board Led by Information Warfare Expert
Sounds like you might’ve believed some propaganda from your side.
mostertoaster··on DHS Creating Disinformation Governance Board Led by Information Warfare Expert
See when one side says your side is spreading disinformation, all we are really saying is your side’s propaganda’s isn’t as good as our sides propaganda.
mostertoaster··on Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources
He might have negative views on trans people.

But the whole blow up was because he did not think the Canadian government should force people to use the correct pronouns. He said he would use them voluntarily if someone asked him, but it was wrong to use force to require others to do so.

Therefore he is a trans hater and an evil person.

mostertoaster··on Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources
It seems like your emotions are all wrapped up in this, and you’re not thinking clearly.

Why would he force trans people out? Elon doesn’t seem like some religious conservative or anything.

This reminds me of how the media and folks fed and ate the narrative that Jordan Peterson is a kind of terrible human who hates trans people.

mostertoaster··on Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources
Someone might’ve said, how is Elon going to make space flight far more affordable?

I have no idea, but he’s a better bet than most other folks I’d say.

Will he succeed? I’d bet not, but I can’t think of someone better to try.

mostertoaster··on My lazy Wordle strategy: same words every time
Yeah this was the exact one I was thinking.

Our wordle slack group lots of people lost on foyer.

I had started with some random word with lots of consonants (all black result), so when I got to having just o e and r, I only had two clear possibilities I could see left with three guesses.

mostertoaster··on My lazy Wordle strategy: same words every time
Since switching to hard mode, I almost never start with “good words”. Too much risk of getting the 10 possibilities with 3 guesses remaining type situation.
mostertoaster··on Why didn't our ancient ancestors get cavities?
Yes I can confirm it was a bad joke.

Personally I thought this whole thread was a joke. Glad I’d be first on your list though, I’m hardly ever first at anything.

Also COVID is fake, the earth is flat, 9/11 was an inside job, and now that you’ve shown desire to killfile(?) a supreme member of the Illuminati, well I don’t know what will happen, but it will probably be semi irritating.

mostertoaster··on Why didn't our ancient ancestors get cavities?
Our ancestors ate less sugar, especially as children.

Next question.

mostertoaster··on Why didn't our ancient ancestors get cavities?
I figured it’s that they ate all the animal. They always boiled the bones and that strengthened their teeth.

I bet if you look at ancient people in tropical areas they had less teeth as well as less need for them.

mostertoaster··on Why didn't our ancient ancestors get cavities?
Because back then bears ate beets. Then we got hooked on them and made beat sugar and now we eat beets. Bears still beat battle star galatica though.
mostertoaster··on Why didn't our ancient ancestors get cavities?
Back in those days she practically got them for free!

It’s why she’s been able to keep her rates so low today, she has a huge backfill from our ancient ancestors’ teeth.

mostertoaster··on Wimbledon Bans Players from Russia and Belarus
This makes no sense.

Must be taking cues from Australia in stupid ways to prevent the best players from playing.

mostertoaster··on Pregame demonstration causes brief evacuation of U.S. Capitol
The demonstration involved US Army members parachuting into the stadium. How the heck are they not on the same page with the Capitol?
mostertoaster··on Show HN: Job board to find venture capital jobs
I both hate and love the startup market.

It seems to be ruled by the mighty dollar, yet is like a force of crazy strength in its ability to naturally select out the strongest.

Sometimes that strength is existing connections and money, though there are those rare times where a truly novel idea breaks free, a truly beautiful design, or something truly good is made.

Is that worth the evil it does?

I don’t know, let the capitalists and socialists fight it out.

I for one will try and be like a hobbit.
