The UI looks a little dated, but I've been happy with 4K Roku. The UX is more functional if uglier than AppleTV.
mosburger··on Helium Browser
That's my (admittedly extremely limited) understanding. The Mozilla/Firefox people de-prioritized making Gecko a separate linkable library years ago, and it's no longer a straightforward thing to do. Which is a real bummer.
mosburger··on Ask HN: Is your company still hiring junior engineers?
Oh I get it. I tried to convince him of the same thing. I figured the skills would be transferable to something less brutal once he inevitably burned out on the games industry. He started looking at less game-oriented programming jobs but he's now questioning his whole career path and considering going into teaching/education instead.
mosburger··on Ask HN: Is your company still hiring junior engineers?
My son has been looking for an entry level position ever since graduating (last year, in 2024) with a Game Development degree at a pretty decent school. Right now he's teaching kids programming in an after-school program to keep from going crazy. Before that he did an unpaid internship. Things are looking pretty grim for him - I wish I knew how to help him. :(
mosburger··on AI adoption linked to 13% decline in jobs for young U.S. workers: study
The UK seemed generally slightly less strict than, say, Germany, France, or Poland. It sorta felt like it was splitting the difference between the US and the EU.
mosburger··on AI adoption linked to 13% decline in jobs for young U.S. workers: study
Oh it absolutely was a terrible employer.
mosburger··on AI adoption linked to 13% decline in jobs for young U.S. workers: study
My previous employer stopped hiring in the EU (except for the UK, where they were based, and South Africa, where the CTO was from) because the labor laws there made it too difficult for them to fire people, which was a particularly troublesome for them as they had almost quarterly layoffs. They switched back to hiring in the UK and US where there are fewer worker protections.

> Who restarts their IDE all the time?

Xcode users laugh nervously.

mosburger··on Claude Code IDE integration for Emacs
Queue the old adage ... "Emacs is a great operating system, what it needs is a good editor."

I'm not sure there is a rigid enough definition of IDE to say whether Emacs qualifies or not. I think it does by virtue of its extensibility, but I could definitely see a legit argument that it's merely an editor because it doesn't have a lot of the tooling of something more modern. I think what you consider to be an IDE (IntelliJ, VS, etc) is something that didn't exist until modern GUIs. Prior to that, terminal based things like Emacs (or LSE on VMS) were the closest analog.

Nicolae Ceaușescu comes to mind?

EDIT: One could argue whether the United Healthcare CEO assassination meets the criteria, too.

i love frivolous stuff like this. it's art that reminds me of the internet's early days, well done.

Last year I underwent treatments for my treatment-resistant major depression using Ketamine. It was a clinical setting, where you'd get wired up to blood pressure, pulse-ox, and other monitors while you were monitored by an RN via video camera. This was IV Ketamine, so not the inhalants that are available now. According to the clinic, the inhalants (which they also offered) are also generally less effective than IV, and the IV was safer in my case because I have other medical conditions where being able to "shut it off" was a good thing - you can turn an IV off, but once you inhale, you're on your own.

So... this clinic was not entirely unlike what you're proposing w/ DMT.

FWIW, the results were incredible. I was effectively "cured." But unfortunately my insurance changed, and it became no longer covered, and I couldn't afford the $2000 every six weeks for the treatment anymore. And it's not super convenient to take two hours off from work to go to the trip-sitter's to get the treatments.

I hope that they figure out what it is in psychadelics that make them effective at treating stuff like depression and PTSD and make it more accessible because it seems like there's so much potential there.

(Also: fuck Elon Musk for making Ketamine a punchline)

mosburger··on Ask HN: What is your fallback job if AI takes away your career?
I'm a moonshiner with delusions of someday opening a micro distillery.
mosburger··on Brian Wilson has died
I think it'll be someone pushing the boundaries of hip hop/rap/etc., it feels like there's still a lot more experimentation and unexplored stuff that can happen there. And most of the people on HN probably won't really appreciate it much, just like the general population didn't quite fully appreciate Brian Wilson's genius back when he was doing his best work.

I'm not super close to that genre so I wouldn't dare hazard a guess who that might be.

mosburger··on Ask HN: Share your AI prompt that stumps every model
I did something similar recently, trying to describe a piece of art that I couldn't remember the name of (it ended up being Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli) ... it really struggles with that sort of thing, but honestly so do most humans. It tended to recommend similarly to what you're describing with movies - it gets distracted by more popular/well-known pieces that don't really match up with the description you're giving to it.
mosburger··on America underestimates the difficulty of bringing manufacturing back
There are plenty of countries in East Africa ripe for this, unfortunately China is beating us there, too. Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania ... all are pretty well positioned right now for development, but rn China is mostly the one doing it.

mosburger··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2025)
The title says HYBRID 2-3 days, but the text says "No remote work." Can you clarify your remote working policy please? Thanks!

I might be interested, but would need to "commute" from Portland Maine, so it's an important distinction :)

mosburger··on Architecture Patterns with Python
I find repository pattern useful for testing ... it's a lot easier to mock a repository than to mock stuff that SQLalchemy might need to do.
mosburger··on Botswana launches first satellite BOTSAT-1 aboard SpaceX Falcon 9
Until very recently I worked for an international remittances company. It's remarkable how far behind the U.S. is, and I always tell people the first countries to go (mostly) cashless with mobile wallets are in East Africa... e.g. Kenya had a ton of people using MPesa long before many European/North American/Asian countries had anything analogous.

Good coaches and managers adjust their style to the person they're coaching.

I learned that from Bill Belichick. XD

mosburger··on How to protect your phone and data privacy at the US border
It doesn't matter. If it's not our (I'm from the U.S.) fault, then whose fault is it? We all, collectively, are ultimately responsible for the outcome of the election. It was our job to convince everyone, including those who didn't vote, to vote for the opposition instead. We failed.

People who are hurt by the policies of this administration aren't going to say "gee, one third of the United States really sucks." Nor should they. Right now, the United States sucks. The onus is on us, all of us, to fix it.

mosburger··on The US island that speaks Elizabethan English
Yeah, similarly I've heard people say that the Maine accent, particularly "down east" islanders, is similar to an English accent in some ways - I think specifically some region of England, like Yorkshire maybe??
mosburger··on 'So immoral': gig economy workers forced to pay fee to receive their wages
Almost no one uses FedNow (which would theoretically bring the U.S. almost on-par with European Open Banking) because the banks really don't have much incentive to integrate with it, especially if they're the ones making money by issuing debit and credit cards.
mosburger··on I keep turning my Google Sheets into phone-friendly webapps
I wonder if anyone has ever made an ORM adapter that works with Google Sheets as its "Database"?
mosburger··on In Defense of Y'All
I'm in Maine and say it all the time, but I'm definitely unusual in that regard.
mosburger··on In Defense of Y'All
I live in Maine, one of the most northy north U.S. states, and I now use y'all all the time. It's totally fit for purpose.

Edit: In fact I use it so often at work that my very prim-and-proper British colleague now uses it often and unironically, which is kinda hilarious.

mosburger··on Lfgss shutting down 16th March 2025 (day before Online Safety Act is enforced)
In the U.S. we have the concept of "piercing the corporate veil" whereby if you can prove that a LLC (effectively a corporate entity created to shield owner's liability) is a flimsy legal device whose only intent is to skirt laws like this one, you are able to go after the LLC owner personally anyway.

Does the UK have a similar concept?

mosburger··on Pragtical: Practical and pragmatic code editor
Is anyone else getting a "“Pragtical.app” is damaged and can’t be opened. You should move it to the Trash" error when attempting to run the arm64 build on macOS? Really wanted to try it out!

I suppose it could just be some security crap Corp IT installed on my laptop preventing it from installing.

It looks like it's only taking up 7.9MB in my Applications folder so it must be corrupt or something.

mosburger··on People Behind “The Print Shop” (1985)
IIRC Print Master supported lowercase letters whereas Print Shop did not. I didn't see any mention of that in the article link above (admittedly I scanned it pretty quickly). I was also a Print Master person because I had a PC Clone (Tandy 1000EX).

It's kinda funny that the DB that was once a fork of Sybase that was ported to Windows is trying to make its way back to Unix.
