mortenjorck··on The 2005 Sony Bravia ad
This is probably a colorful way of saying they bought up a couple months' worth of inventory from Wham-O's western-division distributors.
mortenjorck··on Global sales of combustion engine cars have peaked (2018)
The timeframe is even more important due to the macro environment of the past six years - one might have credibly suggested 2019 was a fluke and that 2020-2021 was obviously a major outlier on many fronts, but the trend keeps going into the latest years they have data for, which combined with the increase in EV sales makes 2018 as Peak Internal Combustion pretty much irrefutable from the vantage point of early 2025.
mortenjorck··on iMac G4(K)
Whether or not it will ever see the light of day (and what use case it will actually solve) is another question, but it’s basically confirmed that Apple is in fact working on this!

mortenjorck··on Show HN: Immersive Gaussian Splat experience of Sutro Tower, San Francisco
As a child of the 90s, I see this as one of those rare, genuine examples of the “museum in cyberspace” imagined by the futurists of the day. Thank you for keeping the dream alive!
mortenjorck··on The ideal candidate will be punched in the stomach
The casual, patent absurdity juxtaposed with the ennui of modern life at a corporate job is, in a genuine literary sense, Kafkaeque. Bravo.

That said, this also feels like something of a relic from the zero-interest-rate era when jobs like this were plentiful, before layoff fever swept the American boardroom.

mortenjorck··on David Lynch has died
On the other end, save Inland Empire for after you've seen a lot of his filmography and are in the mood for a challenge.

I wouldn't call it his best work, but it is Lynch at his most singular and uncompromising.

mortenjorck··on Nikon reveals a lens that captures wide and telephoto images simultaneously
Exactly; in other words, a telephoto may just be "a crop of a wide-angle," but in a wide-angle lens, the area any given field of view covers on a sensor will always be lower resolution than than if it were spread across the entire sensor by a telephoto lens.

Given the automotive context of this product, I would expect the goal was to maximize the resolution for center FOV (more clearly resolve objects further down the road) while simultaneously maximizing the overall FOV angle (see closer objects in peripheral vision).

In practice, the raw image probably looks like the old Photoshop "bulge" filter, and then somewhere in the image pipeline, it will get reprojected into a regular image that is quite blurry at the edges and becomes increasingly high-res toward the center.

(Another way of looking at this would be that this is an optical adaptation to the uniform, cartesian nature of image sensors, allowing a "foveated" image without a gradation in sensor pixel density.)

mortenjorck··on Apple acquires Pixelmator
Some people may not be familiar with the fact that BlackMagic Design incorporated its motion graphics and VFX package, Fusion, into Resolve a few years ago. It's an incredibly powerful compositing package, though its node-based architecture may present a nontrivial learning curve for people accustomed to the pre-comping workflow of AE.
mortenjorck··on Apple's M4 Max chip is the fastest single-core performer in consumer computing
Indeed, the $1599 M4 Pro Mac mini beats the current $3999 M2 Ultra Mac Studio on GeekBench 6 multi-core: https://www.macrumors.com/2024/10/31/m4-pro-chip-benchmark-r...
mortenjorck··on New iMac with M4
This is the best steelmanning I've seen of the Magic Mouse charging port design; I'm surprised I never encountered it before. It actually makes a lot of sense considering how stiff the cables typically are, and it also then makes sense that the (immobile) Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad do have a charging port you can use while the device is in use.
mortenjorck··on Rethinking School Design
I went to a middle school in the 1990s that clearly came out of the same 1970s wave of “rethinking school design.” Ours had the benefit of the what-were-we-thinking retrofit walls being proper drywall, but, perhaps in trying to dodge the climate control problems you mention, most classrooms still didn’t have doors.

I wouldn’t learn what the Lindy effect was until decades later, but looking back, it was an instructive early lesson.

mortenjorck··on How Israel’s bulky pager fooled Hezbollah
Curious why this is currently flagged. It’s an in-depth look at what is almost certainly the most sophisticated and consequential physical supply-chain attack in history, and will be covered in security textbooks for years to come.
mortenjorck··on Ask HN: Where After WordPress?
For a small site with relatively technical administration, Grav is unsurpassed. I've been using it for years for my portfolio and various side projects, and it is a joy to build with.

For a larger site with multiple contributors, I'd probably still stick to Wordpress, though. Its admin experience and ecosystem are just too mature to not take advantage of.

mortenjorck··on Forget ChatGPT: why researchers now run small AIs on their laptops
If the simulation hypothesis is real, perhaps it would follow that all the dark matter and dark energy in the universe is really just extra cycles being burned on layers of interpreters and JIT compilation of a loosely-typed scripting language.
mortenjorck··on Hezbollah pager explosions kill several people in Lebanon
Yeah, this should remove any doubt that there were explosives involved. At the 500 to 1000 mA hour capacity typically used in pagers, even tampering with the battery's venting in an attempt to build up gas pressure would at worst result in a pop and some smoke from the top of the bag.

Blowing a hole in the side of the bag and sending debris for several meters is obviously not plausible with that quantity of lithium.

mortenjorck··on Electric DeLorean DMC-12 Conversion Kit
0-60 in under 5 seconds is impressive, but I think the question on most of our minds is how fast it can hit 88.
mortenjorck··on 1913: When Hitler, Trotsky, Tito, Freud and Stalin all lived in the same place
If the Assassin's Creed franchise ever decides to do the Twentieth Century, 1910s Vienna certainly seems like a leading candidate for the setting.
mortenjorck··on Japan's Real First Console? Bandai's TV Jack 5000
I saw a canny observation the other day:

The first three full-3D Grand Theft Auto games, III, Vice City, and San Andreas, all shipped on the Playstation 2.

Grand Theft Auto V, by contrast, has been the latest game in the series across three successive console generations.

mortenjorck··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
Desperately applying to product design jobs as unemployment stretches into a fifth month.

Keeping myself marginally sane by building a custom browsing experience for my “graphic design reconstructed from dreams” project: https://dreambrief.presteign.com/

mortenjorck··on Show HN: Anyma V, a hybrid physical modelling virtual instrument
I’ve been following the Anyma Phi on the synth blogs; great to see you here!

Any advice for someone on the product side looking to get into the synth development scene? I’m a designer and have so far partnered with a DSP developer on one project, a plugin for Reason based on Mutable Instruments’ Plaits (https://soundlabs.presteign.com), but haven’t really figured out where to go next.

mortenjorck··on Panic at the Job Market
It’ll never happen, but I’d vote for any politician campaigning on requiring, across the board, that H-1Bs be in the top 10% of industry comp for the role.
mortenjorck··on How we sped up Notion in the browser with WASM SQLite
All this wonderful optimization, and yet there's still no UI to warn that (perhaps due to a websocket connection being lost?) a comment won't be saved. I lost two Notion comments this way yesterday!
mortenjorck··on Panic at the Job Market
You probably have a job right now.

To me, laid off twice in 18 months, currently three months unemployed, engaging daily with the Sisyphean madness that is finding a tech job in 2024, the author's darkly humorous, off-the-cuff style resonated deeply.

Given the attention it's getting here, I can only presume I'm not alone.

mortenjorck··on Tokyo's oldest train line – in pictures
I was a little disappointed they didn’t include a picture of Tokyo Station in Chiyoda. The place is incredible – the original building is over 100 years old, the complex connects the Yamanote line with half a dozen other lines including Shinkansen that go across Japan, and the retail areas put many American airports to shame.
mortenjorck··on Employment increases by 206K in June; unemployment rate changes little at 4.1%
Is there an org that tracks tech employment more closely than the BLS? I still don’t know what to make of the gulf between my observed experience and the larger job market.

Anecdotally, more people I know have been laid off in the past year than I’ve ever seen before. I’ve been laid off twice in under 18 months, and am currently going on three months without a job.

And with the caveat that they are both echo chambers, the consistent sentiment I’ve seen here and on LinkedIn is that this is the worst tech job market since the Great Recession. Is tech really that uniquely sensitive to interest rates while the rest of the economy doesn’t care?

mortenjorck··on To Be Real: On Emily Nussbaum’s “Cue the Sun”
Some very interesting cultural through lines highlighted here.

> For Nussbaum, the clip shows COPS and America’s Funniest Home Videos (both premiered in 1989) were also “the first draft of internet culture.”

While this comparison is probably as old as YouTube itself, it’s fascinating to look at the evolutionary parallels from those first clip shows to the comparatively far more elaborate reality TV that begins a decade later.

Observe how the prototypical YouTube content, the “cat video,” has long since given way to something much closer in form to the evolution of reality TV described in the book review: vloggers, blending autobiography and contrivance with increasingly sophisticated production values, the rise of the influencer, and its proliferation across platforms including Instagram and TikTok.

mortenjorck··on CriticGPT: Finding GPT-4's mistakes with GPT-4
It is an unfortunately anthropomorphizing term for a transformer simply operating as designed, but the thing it's become a vernacular shorthand for, "outputting a sequence of tokens representing a claim that can be uncontroversially disproven," is still a useful concept.

There's definitely room for a better label, though. "Empirical mismatch" doesn't quite have the same ring as "hallucination," but it's probably a more accurate place to start from.

mortenjorck··on iDOS 3 Rejected by Apple
Original post is from April, but there is an update at the bottom from June:

> Got a call from Apple after 2 months. They have decided that iDOS is not a retro game console, so the new rule is not applicable. They suggested I make changes and resubmit for review, but when I asked what changes I should make to be compliant, they had no idea, nor when I asked what a retro game console is.

We need a DMA over here yesterday.
