morepork··on Can solar costs keep shrinking?
Even with water heating moving to a heat pump lets you do it using less input energy because you are taking heat from the environment

The risk with an incrementing integer is that your database falls over then you can lose some IDs depending on how often you take backups. After you restore you need to make sure that whatever integer you start at is greater than the highest integer issued beforehand, which may be different to the highest integer in your restored DB. Otherwise you can have clients with the same ID.

I have read that ostriches can outrun humans as they have a much better running economy due to being able to store more elastic energy in their steps.
morepork··on All of Earth's water in a single sphere (2019)
It's interesting to consider that there's about 26,000,000 km^3 of ice in the Antarctic ice sheet, which would give you a much larger ~150 m^3 cube of ice per person. That's not including the Greenland ice sheet or any sea ice.

Outside of Hawaii and maybe Alaska, everywhere in the US would be devastated by the ensuing flood

China's deserts are reasonably far north (latitudes of 30+ degrees), so I doubt they get a capacity factor that high

morepork··on Twitter kills its San Francisco headquarters, will relocate to South Bay
The plan is to run the high speed rail along the same tracks at reduced speed, so if that doesn't get cancelled they'll eventually remove all those
morepork··on Google loses antitrust suit over search deals on phones
The question is not whether Apple could make a profitable search engine. The question is whether they could make a search engine more profitable than the billions they are getting paid each year by Google to make Google search the default.
morepork··on Japan's Nikkei Posts Biggest Single-Day Fall Since 1987 After Weak U.S. Data
On its own I don't think that the rate increases make the carry trade unprofitable. My guess is the large investors can see the potential of the spiral so have started to sell as early as possible before the yen appreciates too much, but in doing so have triggered it. Good for those that already got out, not so much for the rest.
morepork··on Japan's Nikkei Posts Biggest Single-Day Fall Since 1987 After Weak U.S. Data
They went from -0.1% to 0.1% to 0.25% now. It may not seem like much, but the latter is a 2.5x increase, the former, well...

In any case it appears to have caused an unwinding of the yen based carry trade, i.e. borrowing in JPY and using it to purchase foreign stocks/bonds/etc. The unwinding leads to a stock sell off, and a lot of yen buying to settle those loans

morepork··on Is a 'slow' swimming pool impeding world records?
It's nowhere near the difference of a rubber all weather track vs pavement or sand, it's a difference of maybe 1-2%. In any sport different venues can have favourable vs unfavourable conditions that would exceed this
morepork··on Is a 'slow' swimming pool impeding world records?
"it is hosting the diving, water polo, and artistic swimming competitions."
morepork··on Is a 'slow' swimming pool impeding world records?
In Paris they didn't want to build a white elephant swimming venue that will never get filled outside of the Olympics. So instead they converted an indoor stadium, the Paris La Défense Arena that is normally used for rugby and concerts.

You can see in the timelapse video here[1] the pool being built above the surface. They built it to a depth of 2.15m, the minimum required is 2m, but the recommended depth is 3m.

I can only assume that making it deeper would have cost more, and perhaps reduced the sightlines from the stands as the pool would have been higher in the arena?

The time to buy Nvidia was 5 years ago, and you would have had 30x gains (or even earlier). But the upside now does look more limited

morepork··on Horizontal running inside circular walls of Moon settlements
They do mention that an erg doesn't have the full effect wanted:

> Low-intensity steady-state exercise or high-intensity interval training on ergometers may serve to preserve cardiorespiratory fitness [12,25–27] but have little impact on muscle and bone mass.

morepork··on The window for great-grandmothers is closing
Yeah, it seems like great grandmothers at least would have been reasonably common as women had children so much younger than today. If women have children at 18, you could be a great grandmother in your 50s. There would probably have been the odd great-great grandmother as well.

morepork··on Plastic bag bans work
Maybe they should have a deposit that gets refunded if you return it. Say it cost $1 per bag, but you could get it refunded if returned on your next trip you get most of the convenience with little hassle.
morepork··on Plastic bag bans work
There is too much of a focus on recycling, when reducing the amount of stuff we consume would be far more beneficial.

When I was at school they used to talk about the 4 Rs, reduce, renew, reuse, recycle (I'm sure different variations exist). With recycling being essentially a last resort as it's so difficult and inefficient. But now it seems there is barely any mention of the first 3.

morepork··on America Is Missing Out on the Best Electric Cars
That's what this Chinese manufacturers provide.

Here in New Zealand you can get a GWM Ora for 43k (26k USD) or MG4 for 47k (29k USD). These both include 15% GST.

If they could export to the US without penalties, I'd expect the prices to be even lower due to economies of scale in a much larger market.
