moon_of_moon··on Ask HN: What non-technical skill would help you most in your career in 2016?
If the economy tanks, you might find yourself surrounded by people who didn't really deserve to be in their jobs, but floated up with the high tide of a buoyant economy. These are the people who will resort to nasty office politics to keep their jobs.

Ergo, learn to defend yourself from it.

moon_of_moon··on Ask HN: How to find people to develop your side projects? and vice versa
Um.. you do realize that the only difference between the Indian engineers at Google or VMWare in California, and some of the the guys working out of India is that the latter didnt do an MS or get a visa sponsored? Take the sharpest Indian dev you know in Palo Alto -- for every one of him, there are like five guys like that back home working on offshore Engineering teams. They are not doing php on Upwork.
moon_of_moon··on Ask HN: How to find people to develop your side projects? and vice versa
I think what OP means is this: the tech ecosystem in places like Bangalore is booming more than anywhere else and the good programmers in India have amazing opportunities to make good money or are in career paths that heads to a position earning in a stronger currency, and so its hard to find rock star Indian candidates on these platforms.
moon_of_moon··on Judge sends two to prison for 7 years for H-1B fraud
I suppose the main rebuttal is that, if the program enforced an earning requirement of > $100k (or so depending on state) regardless of position, it would not affect a net increase in the available labor pool for a large section of workers.
moon_of_moon··on Judge sends two to prison for 7 years for H-1B fraud
If they made the H1-B system fairer for the immigrant workers, so that they their employability wasn't tied to a sponsorship, it would actually be better for American workers.

How?

Because H1-B employees cannot transfer out easily and live in fear of losing their jobs, because it means packing up and going home. (I can only imagine how much managerial abuse and in the worst case, sexual harassment this situation can lead to.) Employers love this arrangement, because it allows lower wages (the H1B worker isnt going to fight for a higher salary because he knows its dangerous to walk without another sponsor lined up.) and this pseudo indentured servitude arrangement makes for dependable employees.

Now if they took that away those restrictions, salaries would increase and employers would have no incentive to hire an immigrant over a local worker.

No. Interview failed you. Apply better job. Using Debugger easy. Using brains not easy.

moon_of_moon··on A majority of millennials now reject capitalism
q: "do you support capitalism"

a: "not in the way it treats engineers as 'resources', and cronies, friends and relatives as 'management' as but in principal yes"

q: "i need a yes/no answer"

a: ".."

q: "so i'm putting down no"

a: "whatever".

fun fact: If the fortune 500 were a country it would have the second largest GDP in the world.

Most of you here reject or would like to run away from that institutional form of capitalism anyway to a good startup.

moon_of_moon··on US government commits to publish publicly financed software under FOSS licenses
Why is this limited to software?

Why not also publish publicly financed: * legal agreements * HR contracts * management presentations, best practices, and training material * marketing presentations and training material * creative output such as artwork and music

so that the rest of the world can use them for free..

moon_of_moon··on Intel Unleashes Its First 8-Core Desktop Processor
More, in fact.

But your original point is a valid one: AMD introduced desktop 8 core processors a couple of years ago, while this is intels first 8 core desktop processor.

moon_of_moon··on Ask HN: Google employees, why is G+ more important than your users?
So really the only way to identify high quality information is by what some would call "peer reviewed, authenticated content". That means you know something about the person who generated the content and a bunch of people (who you also know something about) review it and vote it up. Thats why a large percentage of high ranked search results come from wikipedia and stack overflow/exchange and quora.

LinkedIn and Facebook are leading the market in the authenticated peer reviewed content business, which is locked in to their platforms, and which search engines cannot index.

Extrapolate ten years down the line, and that means a scenario where existing search engine leadership is severely compromised.

And thats why the push for G+. Its do or die.

tl;dr: the goal is to have search access to authenticated peer reviewed content, and to mitigate the risk of existing market leaders in that space from cannibalizing the search business, and with it the lucrative advertising business.

moon_of_moon··on Google's Current Bid for Groupon: $5 Billion.
Where does all that revenue come from? (I'm not in the US so I don't use the site). Forbes is reporting $500mm annual sales.

Boston, for example, has a deal today for 150 * $15 meals at a restaurant. That's $2250 revenue for a day or about $800k for the year. Assuming there are about 30 large cities in the US thats $24mm annual revenues.

Even if the average deal size (item price * count) is FIVE times that its about $110mm annually.

Also kind of tough to scale when the USP is ONE deal a day right? I mean will this work with two deals a day?

What am i missing?

Thanks.

Pretty sure a real entrepreneur will not view that as embarrassment. This is the only way to start. Build something, put it out, review lessons learnt, improve it, build the next thing...

Bill Gates' first idea for a company was one that made devices that were supposed to be installed at traffic junctions, IIRC. (ref: business at the speed of thought)

Way to go Vasudeva.

moon_of_moon··on Ask HN: What do you want to tell Microsoft?
1. I've used Ubuntu on my desktop for the last 1.5 years. We switched most of our Windows servers to Linux over the last year as well. It would be great to have a free base Windows OS release, with zero bells and whistles, but a fully functional networking stack, and no connection limits. Provide the rest as a paid monthly service. The corporations that are going to pay for it, will pay for bells and whistles. Most of them are currently migrating to Linux, btw; the only thing that stops them if anything is the lack of paid support for the middleware.

2. Price your software according to purchasing power parity. If a book in a B&N store in SFO costs $US49, the same book costs about $USD10 in book stores in Bangalore. Do the same for Windows and MS Office. (Require that its paid for by a country specific credit card if you must).

3. Open an office somewhere more exciting than Seattle. Remember that most of the crew pulling all nighters and doing the death march are < 30 y/o, think about what they want from life.

4. Send me money, and I'll tell explain in detail how to turn around the online business.

moon_of_moon··on Ask HN: Experiences with PayPal? Would you recommend or kill it with fire?
If you lose your password, the hoops you have to go through to recover it are amazing. Pro tip: don't ever lose your password. Or better, as others have suggested, sweep money out as soon as it arrives.
moon_of_moon··on [Ask HN] Best way to generate thumbnail of websites?

moon_of_moon··on HN: How can I contact Google?
<i>I suspect you will find that if you are not capable of making this a PR issue for Google ... </i>

Although op's PR skills in the social news aggregation space appear to be remarkably good. But the arguments still hold that this stuff is valuable if it has users, not because of the tech.

moon_of_moon··on How would you serve 100,000 simultaneous comet requests with Node.js?
Amusing thread.
moon_of_moon··on What stops population growth? [video]
First to summarize what he says:

It used to be short life expectancies led to people having more children. Not anymore, as most countries are in the high life expectancy group.

Basically better family planning, womens rights, and health care leads to higher life expectancies leading to: SMALLER FAMILIES.

Now I will add:

i) Divorce laws, and strict enforcement of it. I think this contributes heavily to lowering populations. But you need that because of point (ii) below.

ii) The lack of religion leads to a lifestyle that breaks down the family unit. Once the patriarchal mode of life goes out of the window, so does the population growth. In other words, women's rights. So its a trade-off.

I'm looking at you Europe.

moon_of_moon··on 2000-2009: Microsoft's Decade of Shattered Dreams
Sorry this article is borderline ridiculous. Comparing for example, Amazon S3 to NTFS is like comparing an online storage platform used for building web services on top of, to a local file system used for storing files on desktops. Oh wait.

Seems to me like its a hurried piece of negative PR in part of a much larger war. Probably a response to the "Top 9 products Google killed" story somewhere else on the internets.
