moogly··on The problem is not AI code, but not knowing about system architecture or intent
No human will read that though.
moogly··on How the Chorleywood Bread Process transformed British bread
The US also has insane stuff, yes. Romex stapled to studs, impossible to change, fix or renovate without tearing up the walls.

Balloon framing itself isn't crazy though: look at Scandinavia (maybe excluding Norway since their electrical system is a bit... special) for the same type of home construction (Western Framing Construction or whatever it's called), but with in-wall conduit and star system like in continental Europe.

moogly··on Tesla workers balk at training Optimus humanoid robots as replacements
Cute optimism.

Attractive people: shipped off to Epstein islands

The rest: medical experiments, weapons testing and biomass

moogly··on Nobody wanted an "AI PC," so Microsoft stopped calling it that
Cool, can I get my right Ctrl key back? Didn't find a solution to un-Copilot it for my HP laptop on Linux since its keyboard firmware immediately sends a keyup after 3 ms even when the key is held down.

Harsh but true. It's the same phenomenon as defending the BS 1363 power plug that needed an embedded fuse because their domestic postwar electrical wiring was Not Great -- to save on copper.

But we all do this with our own stanky poop.

moogly··on I resigned from Anthropic today
If they truly, truly believed that, would they be speeding towards building it? If yes, that would make them truly insane, right? Not as in a quaint "off their rocker" but more "non compos mentis".
moogly··on Isar Aerospace reaches orbit and deploys payloads on second flight
I think the missing word there might be "private", because there's also Esrange (for smaller satellites as of now).
moogly··on Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1
Today, Opus talked about "rotation slabs" in relation to logging. (and not log rotation). I didn't even bother asking what that was supposed to mean and switched over to Sonnet.
moogly··on Israel's far-right competes for votes with increasingly extreme visions
Ah, another article doing the "oh this extremism thing is just because there's an election cycle; they don't really think like this" defense. Similar to how the western media did in the 30s.

But then we also have the "the democrats are mega extreme now and they want to destroy America and make Hasan Piker their God-Emperor" thing that the same media organization are pushing. Traditional US media is completely fucked and captured.

moogly··on Smaller reactors bring nuclear power closer to fulfilling its promise
Fission reactors in multiple European countries had to shut down due to heatwaves. And in Scandinavia (Sweden), they are "routinely" stopped for scheduled and most importantly unscheduled maintenance.

But those don't have scary sounding German names, I guess.

moogly··on The model picker is a dead end
> The choice matters.

Yeah this is where I stopped reading.

moogly··on Andreessen Horowitz is investing billions into a bleak future
Hard to say Flock is the worst... There's a lot of competition. I'll throw Toka into the ring.

moogly··on Initial focus for our partnership with Motorola is a regular non-folding device
> Supporting a flip device with vertical folding would be a new form factor for GrapheneOS. The main use case for those is a tiny phone to use with one hand in the folded form factor.

So, I've been using flip phones now exclusively since the Samsung Z-Flip3 (and will never go back to slab phones unless the flip segment disappears), but I almost never use the outer screen. Maybe that is just me, but I have a feeling it's pretty common.

moogly··on California's new tire efficiency rules could save drivers $1B a year
Railway dust contains quite a bit of PM2.5, PM10 and NOx.
moogly··on How does IKEA come up with names for its products?
Similar trivia with a Swedish connection: the original name of the Honda Fit/Jazz was Honda Fitta, but then they found out it's the Swedish word for "cunt" so that was a no-go.
moogly··on Israel creates fake think tank in likely attempt to dupe AI chatbots
Liar.

> “Not just those who pose an immediate threat — there are people there who are not worthy of life. They shouldn’t live. They’re not even people.”[1]

moogly··on Israel creates fake think tank in likely attempt to dupe AI chatbots
> These pile of rocks were funded by Qatar and that money could’ve been used to build schools

Just so Israel would have had more schools to bomb.

moogly··on Idea for flying Tesla Roadster has been around 'since the beginning'
Why stop at flying? Just go for teleportation.
moogly··on Anthropic CEO says the way for AI to win over the public is to cure cancer
Is anyone using it for that though? Or is it being used for double-tapping girl schools?
moogly··on Abdominal fat predicts heart disease risk better than BMI
> Just buy unprocessed, basic food, fruit and veg.

I have the problem that I absolutely abhor most fruit and veg and would rather not eat anything (which you can do for a couple of days at most). It's hard to get full on onions and sundried tomatoes.

moogly··on Migrating from Tauri to Electron: Performance Comparison
I recently did this (with Opus 5) for a private project and was content with the result. There were 2-3 minor things I had to fix afterwards, but overall it went well.

I can now finally (and easily!) build AppImages that work on multiple Linux distros. I still have to use XWayland (like I did with Tauri anyhow) due to an upstream Chromium bug w/ global hotkeys, but it should land soonish, so then I'll be using native Wayland too.

As a bonus, it also fixed a drag 'n' drop issue I was unable to work around on Tauri (scrolling viewport with mousewheel while dragging an object), plus scrolling perf is night and day.

Reminder that this isn't true market share, but data coming from ProtonDB user reports.
moogly··on Zigbee vs. Matter over Thread:Understanding IoT Protocol Performance in Practice
As someone with hundreds of Zigbee devices w/ zigbee2mqtt in a network (actually 2; one in my standalone garage, and one in the house), I'm hoping Thread/Matter will not take over because _for me_ it does not have a single improvement over Zigbee 3.0 and I have had 0 inclination to adopt any Matter devices so far. Probably why Zigbee 4.0 is a thing.
moogly··on Apple is getting this wrong
He's done that forever. For a while he stopped doing it, which made people think everything he posted was ChatGPT.
moogly··on Israel's $50M Experiment to Change U.S. Public Opinion
Pariah state flailing around.
moogly··on My car's OTA update broke Android Auto, and it's a indictment of modern software
Does MINI make their own software? I thought it was the same as BMWs with another skin. My BMW gets quarterly updates. Only once in the past year I've had it did I notice anything new (new voice assistant), otherwise it just resets my driver screen and sets my interior lighting on full blast every time it updates.

If Android Auto stopped working I'd also be livid because I don't use the built in crap.

moogly··on My car’s OTA update broke Android Auto
Did you just come off the Mayflower?
moogly··on TypeScript 7
A minor version bump? Exciting times we live in.
