montzark··on To YouTube: I'd gladly pay you if your website was de-bloated and fast like this
Firefox seems to work as well?
montzark··on Chrome: Heap buffer overflow in WebP
Imo other related code of the person who made that mistake should be audited, could be there is similiar mistake somewhere else.

Additionally imo possible that some developers would intentionally make such mistakes to sell these to interested persons, there are millions to be made here.

montzark··on Unauthenticated RCE on a RIGOL oscilloscope
Maybe easy fix would be some certification requirement for routers that by default ports to device are closed even from same network? Some time ago there was issue with default passwords and it got solved with default passwords unique to device.
montzark··on U.S. mortgage interest rates jump to 7.16%, highest since 2001
My bad, I'm from Europe. I think here is vice versa.
montzark··on U.S. mortgage interest rates jump to 7.16%, highest since 2001
There is nuance that interest changes over the period of the loan. In or so 2007 some people took 5% Euribor + margin loans, but only some years after it was negative. And since negative euribor was not written to contracs some paid less interest than was margin.
montzark··on German Government Agency warns about using Kaspersky
Thanks! My bad.

Little bit worried about Jetbrains products as well. I think they have development centers in Russia? Not worried about company, but rather some disgruntled employee, for example put this USB stick to your computer or otherwise we will prosecute you or your close one for participating in protests or some fabricated accusation.
montzark··on 10 years of whatever this has been
I'm talking about investing not buying "stuff". Letting someone to make good use of my money to create something and give me some in return.
montzark··on 10 years of whatever this has been
Small inflation is feature not a bug. Imagine money gaining worth over time, no point to invest in anything creating something new, just hold it.
montzark··on We Need Software Updates Forever
Perhaps law needs to be that software needs to be open sourced after some years of product launch or when official support ends - then community can over?
montzark··on Noisy appliances: How loud is your house?
And it's just yearly I think? I think modders will just revert mods for inspection and then redo mods after they have passed.
montzark··on Noisy appliances: How loud is your house?
Appliances are least concern in city. To me most noise comes from cars and motorcycles. This area seems really underegulated, basically anyone can annoy a lot of people at once by making exhaust louder to establish I don't even know what?

Semi-joke: Anyone can do it, just drill holes to exhaust before muffler. I thought that maybe I should do that, like annoy so much people that something would be done in regarding this.

montzark··on Spain is forcing phone makers to give you an extra year of warranty
So you'd prefer a phone without a warranty if it would be cheaper?
montzark··on China’s $4k electric cars tap huge market Tesla can’t reach
Death traps because rest of the vehicles are way heavier and more dangerous (also to pedestrians).

If all cars were like that it would be fine.

montzark··on Ask HN: Please stop writing tutorials/tech articles on Medium
No it was not just you, same here.
montzark··on ElectricityMap – Live CO₂ emissions of electricity production and consumption
True, but we produce 30x less power. Sweden probably has more industries though.

Just the theoretical idea that if you would "nuke" the black countries off the map then evertything is green and fine? Not really. Imo it should be rather based on percentage of total emissions of the world. Then map would show where difference needs to be made.

montzark··on ElectricityMap – Live CO₂ emissions of electricity production and consumption
Estonia looks bad, but taking into account that we only produce 0.5GWh (1100g per kwh) compared to Sweden's 15 (40g per kwh), we produce about the same amount of carbon. Kind of misleading in that sense.
montzark··on USB-C was supposed to simplify our lives, but instead it’s a total mess
USB-C is awesome. Quite cheap (40€) 20000 mAh Xiaomi power bank can output 20V/45W so I can use it to charge my T480s. Also bought cheap usb-c Power Delivery modules (can output 5/9/12/15/20V) which I used to provide power for my TS100 soldering iron. Combined with the power bank it's now a portable soldering iron. TS80 has usb-c even built in, no module needed.
montzark··on The EU is set to declare war on encryption
Maybe technical solution to this without backdoors would be to encrypt everything twice and store both?

One is for intended target and second time with public key provided by law enforcement.

And perhaps there should be a third independent actor who would hold the private key (in hardware without extraction possibility hopefully) and on request basis would decrypt something for law enforcement and provide supervision and statistics for citizens. Ok one problem would be then that if that machine breaks there is no way to decrypt anything encrypted for that public key :D.

montzark··on 18 Years
Not a C developer, but doesn't this look like a backdoor present for 18 years?
montzark··on Money laundering in the UK
It's not on his account, he would have the credentials to make transactions with the account.
montzark··on European Parliament approves copyright reform
I'm wondering if VPN providers are also lobbying for more territorial censorship. They have only to gain from this.
montzark··on Theoretical way to levitate objects with light
Could we use this to make more haptic touch screens?
montzark··on A female engineer's opinion on why there are fewer women in tech
Thoughts about picture "The APMs at a social event in Napa"?

The lady is kind of left out. Not sure if it's american hover-hand culture, but to me it looks one of the problems.

montzark··on Ask HN: What do you want to see in Ubuntu 17.10?
- FLAVOR: Ubuntu Desktop

- HEADLINE: Integration with Microsoft Active Directory

- DESCRIPTION: Would be nice if in enterprise environment single-sign-on (logging on with kerberos) would work out of the box :). Samba shares in nautilus are usually also slow (against windows server, between linuxes is ok) or have some other logging in problems.

- ROLE/AFFILIATION: Software developer using Ubuntu in enterprise, which officially supports Windows.
