month13··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
The wires really get in the way, even in a seated context. I often use a Rift S for rally games, and the wire will get caught in the backrest, the wheels, my legs. VR is immersive, so you instantly forget and it's a thick and fragile wire so there's a degree of stress.

Not to mention the trip hazard or ripping it out of the PC while playing room-scale games.

I concur, given hardware constraints that a far more slimmed down unit would have been appealing, and more future-proof, but I believe there's still a requirement for onboard compute for inside-out tracking and handling disconnection events, at some point making it self-sufficient (at the time) was seen as not much more expense.

I was really hoping to realise the "Spatial Computing" dream of the Vision Pro, but was largely priced-out of the experience, considering it basically necessitates a MacBook to complete it too.

I would wager a simple browser and terminal session is probably all I need, so was looking forward to this device. However, the screen resolution is likely to be too small, I had done some experiments with Virtual Desktop, but the Rift S was too low-res, everything had to be like 48pt.

Reviews showing the desktop being fully accessible, does give quite a bit of hope, however.

Agreed, this sounds like an odd feature to list.

There's a lot of mods (espescially for Unreal) that can graft VR support onto it, I'd say that's a more viable use case than virtual theatre screen.

I used to do this back in the day with VorpX. Playing the original bioshock via that was an incredible experience, seeing all the environmental storytelling. Utterly terrifying too.

month13··on Personal Computer by Perplexity
Serifs are so back and I'm so excited.
month13··on GPT‑5.3 Instant
ChatGPT kicked off with 3.5, now this is the reverse. Would be fun to drag race these against each other, the harbinger of a revolution against now the fast path serve billions model.
month13··on uBlock filter list to hide all YouTube Shorts
YouTube's hostility is truly remarkable, by far the most egregious that the Subscriptions page in the TV app having a dedicated row for "recommendations" and "shorts" before you can proceed.
month13··on Gemini CLI tips and tricks for agentic coding
Codex CLI switched from a typescript implementation to a Rust based one.
month13··on Someone at YouTube Needs Glasses: The Prophecy Has Been Fulfilled
My latest favorite is now that the Subscriptions panel adds a bonus "Recommended" row at the top, and then two rows down, a "Recommended Shorts"
month13··on Steam Frame
I really hope it's not going to take years to be sold in Australia, like the Steam Deck took.
month13··on Anthropic raises $13B Series F
For those curious, I found this to be a very entertaining retelling of events from Nortel's persepective: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6xwMIUPHss
month13··on Open models by OpenAI
I was road testing tool calling in LM Studio a week ago against a few models marked with tool support, none worked, so I believe it may be a bug. Had much better luck with llama.cpp’s llama-server.
month13··on Compiler for the B Programming Language
This is mainly for fun, really.

Tsoding's main lesson is how simple systems can be and the desire and demand for complex build systems is silly.

month13··on Apple's Software Quality Crisis
You see it in Windows 10, as well. Seeing the "working on it" when navigating folders, as if I'm using 5400 RPM hard disk drives.
month13··on Ruby “Thread Contention” Is Simply GVL Queuing
My problem also. Loved Ruby's object model, but it seems the metaprogramming gives too much freedom to run free and wild. I had a hard time understanding understanding how some gems even achieve, as they crisscross across files and other gems.
month13··on Show HN: I've spent nearly 5y on a web app that creates 3D apartments
Ran into the same payment bug mentioned elsewhere, also would like to mention the tech support gives "Oops a problem occurred" when trying to submit.

Looks schmick tho, and have been looking for a tool to plan out my place before I move in, found most tools expensive or lacking.

month13··on k on pdp11
Yeah, there's really great history and some amazing stories to be heard from the interviews.
month13··on Sam Altman is still trying to return as OpenAI CEO
Twitter doesn't really work at all when logged out. Try logged in or using something like nitter.net
month13··on NewPipe – Lightweight YouTube experience for Android
I was happy paying for YouTube Premium, but they just doubled the price in my geo. So yeah, i'm considering not paying.
month13··on Ask HN: Why did Python win?
Delving into a gem sometimes makes me lose faith in ever using dependencies again.
month13··on Block YouTube ads on AppleTV by decrypting and stripping ads from Profobuf
They train you to do this when they volume boost the ads to blow your eardrums out.
month13··on Ask HN: Could you share your personal blog here?
Count me as loving it, this is a great read.
month13··on Ask HN: Could you share your personal blog here?
Wanted to chime in, been a long time reader, it's great work.
month13··on Photomator for Mac
Photoshop is general image manipulation, layers brushes, all the power.

Lightoom is more for photography. Ingest workflow, applying small changes like colour adjustments and applying them on batches. Non-destructive edits, working with raw images without the need to "render" them into bitmaps.

After Lightoom 6 they moved to Creative Cloud, to a fairly expensive subscription. Furthermore, they did a revamp to become more inline with their mobile offerings, and started feeling even more sanded down.

month13··on Run Llama 13B with a 6GB graphics card
https://bellard.org/ts_server/ may be what you are after.

You can run open-source models, but the software itself is closed-source and free for non-commercial use.

month13··on The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Release
I can't really draw a parallel to those games, probably the closest would be to fallout, the open world 3d ones specifically. BotW & now TOTK have a massive focus on it's world and it's pretty immersive to clamber over mountains and discover things. It has unique systems to interact and traverse the world, improved further in TOTK.
month13··on The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Release
On its own, it's arguably probably worse. There are a few improvements, you start out with a larger inventory and you are showered with parts to use with fuse.

I do not see what Nintendo sees that this system added to the game.

month13··on The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Release
Probably even better, as the overworld will be completely new.

Playing TOTK it's a drastic improvement over BotW.

month13··on Transformer architecture optimized for Apple Silicon
This is an older paper, but DeepMind alleges in their Chinchilla paper that far better performance can be extracted with fewer parameters; quote

"We find that current large language models are significantly under-trained, a consequence of the recent focus on scaling language models whilst keeping the amount of training data constant."

It's difficult to evaluate a LLM's performance as it's all qualitative, but Meta's LLaMA has been doing quite well, at even 13B parameters.

month13··on iPad Pro M2
Hey, they tried really hard with Stage Manager running so poorly it required an M1 iPad in order to run.

They've since walked that back, and while it is being reworked will be coming to a14 models after all, probably sans the external display support.

month13··on iPhones and action discoverability
A related story, shortly after upgrading to the new iPHone. I noticed while driving I got a big album art preview on the Lock Screen while I was driving. However, after customising my Lock Screen it’s gone back to the small activity preview. I have tried a few changes to back, but no dice. New versions of iOS have been successively making the album art smaller and smaller, and i thought this was a return to form, but I guess it must’ve been a bug.
