montag··on Meta's Muse AI agent is building a dossier on you
I sure hope it is. Otherwise I will switch to a product that understands me better.
montag··on A Stupid Idea for AI Alignment We Came with by Looking at Specification Gaming
In case the title is unclear, this is about gaming the specification, as in “gaming the system.”
montag··on PageRank explained
Really?? And not BrinRank?
montag··on Falstad Math and Physics Simulations
Legendary
montag··on Playing with Georgia
I was on board until “fake a medium weight”… faux bold is one of my pet peeves. How hard would it be to turn Georgia into a true variable axis font?
montag··on Show HN: Isopolis – Isometric pixel map of SF
Really cool. I can see some issues, like Starr King park turned into a lake for some reason, but it’s so much fun to look at. Do you have any way to patch errors and discontinuities at the tile boundaries?
montag··on Fasttracker II clone in C using SDL 2
I agree. The limitations forced composers to be economical and creative.

As for modern OSTs, I like VA-11Hall-A. Never played it though

montag··on Increasing the lifespan of a bulb makes it worse in every other way
Misled
montag··on 98.css
I used 98.css as starting point for the Winamp theme in https://chiptune.app. It was very easy to modify and extend, thanks!
montag··on I wrote an bash enumerator because I was sick of xargs
Hm. Underrated comment
montag··on I wrote an bash enumerator because I was sick of xargs
I thought -- was typically a separator for passing a list of arguments directly to some subcommand
montag··on Show HN: ClipTunes, string together trimmed YouTube video clips
This would be really cool for putting musical samples back-to-back. Like 50 versions of Paganini's Caprice No. 24 in 2 minutes.

I did a double take on the domain name, it's very similar to mine https://chiptune.app :)

montag··on Your 'app' could have been a webpage (so I fixed it for you)
That is a great analogy! I still remember the day my cousin explained that there was a whole internet outside of AOL…
montag··on The art and engineering of Sega CD Silpheed
Agreed :) lots here to play with: https://chiptune.app?q=silpheed
montag··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (July 2026)
It’s pretty. Lots of people have anxiety around the big question. A tool like this can really help.
montag··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (July 2026)
Have you thought about building it as a plugin, e.g. for Jetbrains?
montag··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (July 2026)
Wow, that’s neat. Perfect for a hyperlight drifter style game.
montag··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (July 2026)
Wow, nice.
montag··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (July 2026)
I am working on https://chiptune.app.

Most recently, adding SID support, and adding timing information to the emulated formats that don’t have any tagged song duration (e.g., converting NSF to NSFE). This means playing the songs one by one and watching for repeated sequences of writes to the sound chip registers.

What is subitizing?
montag··on EU Parliament greenlights Chat Control 1.0
I think this is basically correct and aligns with Facebook’s massive push toward e2ee in Messenger. They don’t want to be on the hook, and didn’t do e2ee just for the fun of it
montag··on Tacky men with ridiculous glasses want you to wear them too
I agree that VR goggles hit a ceiling due to simple inconvenience. Whether smart glasses will suffer the same fate is a very interesting question. But the article would be much more effective without the cheap “tech bro” ridicule. Ultimately, after calling every product ugly, the analysis put forward by this author comes down to “short battery life and privacy concerns”.
montag··on Bobby Prince, composer for Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, and Duke Nukem 3D, has died
Wondering About My Loved Ones is one of my favorites. Appears also in Spear of Destiny https://chiptune.app/?play=C-eWH0LI
montag··on How many of the 170k English words do you know?
The test hardly seems adaptive (if at all) and yet it made the HN front page. That’s impressive.
montag··on How many of the 170k English words do you know?
You’ll have to ask quiz takers for their SAT/ACT scores to estimate the (probably extreme) sample bias
montag··on How many of the 170k English words do you know?
Not to mention, N=1
montag··on Hetzner Price Adjustment
It sounds like "know-your-customer" is not the problem, but rather the quaint assumption of a permanent mailing address is the problem. Isn't some manner of KYC an essential part of a society with laws?
montag··on GameBoy Workboy
Where are you seeing this?
montag··on Show HN: Putt.day a daily mini golf game
The score card should reflect your latest playthru even if it “doesn’t count.”
montag··on Show HN: Hallucinate – Massively Multiplayer Online Rave
Suggestions:

- make the controls work like a typical FPS (i.e. WASD controls should not rotate the player but just strafe)

- make spacebar jump, and a different key to talk, like T

- make the jump work like a platformer where you start falling as soon as you release the button. so people can make small hops to the beat

- stop dancing after a few seconds of inactivity
