montag··on SynthID – A tool to watermark and identify content generated through AI
"The watermarks are embedded across Google’s generative AI consumer products, and are imperceptible to humans."

I'd love to see the data behind this claim, especially on the audio side.

montag··on Ban me at the IP level if you don't like me
And while you're at it, start speaking Esperanto, use the metric system, and switch to a Dvorak keyboard.
montag··on Show HN: Game demo made with my homemade game engine
Yes...and it's LOUD!
montag··on Anna's Archive: An Update from the Team
In case the site is down when you read this (as it is now): https://web.archive.org/web/20250819061343/https://annas-arc...
montag··on Abogen – Generate audiobooks from EPUBs, PDFs and text
Very surprising that you're offering this without subscription. Huge selling point. Next time the need arises, I'll come back for WithAudio.
montag··on We'd be better off with 9-bit bytes
Nah…We would have attempted to squeeze even bigger things into 18- and 36-bit address spaces that would have been equally short-sighted. But this is a tragedy of successes :)
montag··on Los Alamos is capturing images of explosions at 7 millionths of a second
I understood the article just fine, despite the spurious hyphen. The HN title could be improved immensely if it just said 7 microseconds.
montag··on Online Collection of Keygen Music
Wow, very nice! Interestingly, uses a completely different set of player libraries compared to https://chiptune.app (chiptune2.js and libopenmpt vs. libgme and libxmp, etc.) Also was started way back in 2015. And yet there are many similarities.
montag··on Sign in with Google in Chrome
I hope the PMs are reading this thread. They misjudged the tradeoffs
montag··on OpenAI investor suspected to fall into ChatGTP-induced psychosis
Wow, nailed it. I take it this is a collaborative fiction project? Not to worry, Gemini explained it to me:

> The core conceit is that you, the reader, have gained access to the internal database of a secret organization. The articles are presented in-universe as if they were written by anonymous researchers, agents, and AI constructs employed by the Foundation.

montag··on Gemini CLI
It's very hard to figure out what resource is incurring charges – and get to a page where you can press "Cancel" on that resource – from the Billing Page. I had to open a support ticket to shut down my Cloud Workstation because I simply couldn't find it in the labyrinth. I gave up and deleted my project.
montag··on Astronomers Just Solved the Mystery of the Universe's Missing Matter
Right, Sabine's channel is the modern version of that "ancient" show.
montag··on Apple introduces a universal design across platforms
I love the switcheroo thought experiment: imagine we have always had transparent glassy user interfaces; for whatever reason, that's what the techology allowed. And in 2025 we have made a breakthrough and finally achieved opaque buttons. Would this change be just as controversial?

No, it would be a massive net positive. Everyone would love these new opaque buttons that obscure the noise underneath so that you can easily read foreground text.

In light of AR glasses, this thought experiment is even more relevant...

montag··on Apple introduces a universal design across platforms
It's really beautiful, but I don't want it on my device.
montag··on What are people doing? Live-ish estimates based on global population dynamics
Could easily extend the idea to zoom in on the map, constraining to various region sizes... The information gets a little "washed out" when you combine all the timezones into one blob.
montag··on Have I Been Pwned 2.0
You’ve got me beat by 1. Congratulations
montag··on Material 3 Expressive
When I was in design school, the dean roasted me for slapping cartoon flowers on a brochure for a female audience. It was hackneyed in retrospect. Kinda like this
montag··on Tek – A music making program for 24-bit Unicode terminals
nit: Renoise; good stuff, thanks for sharing.
montag··on Wavelet Trees: An Introduction (2011)
I think the site just went down.
montag··on Tek – A music making program for 24-bit Unicode terminals
Really awesome UI. Is there a quick YouTube demo?
montag··on A simple 16x16 dot animation from simple math rules
Anybody else reminded of the old Sony logo?

edit: much better with a negation :)

montag··on Plain Vanilla Web
Spend five minutes on webcomponents.org for a depressing ride. Broken links, broken demos, ghost town community and shuttered chat servers. Sponsored and abandoned by the Google Polymer team, or so it appears. Just sad.
montag··on Plain Vanilla Web
There are caveats and warnings already by the time we've added an `<x-header>`, and the attribute boilerplate seems onerous right from the start. It pains me to say that almost a decade on, I'm still not a fan of web components.
montag··on Leaving Google

montag··on Leaving Google
Wha... I need to look into this. Grim.

IWNO, thanks.
montag··on Astronomers confirm the existence of a lone black hole
Thanks, the original article is unreadable on mobile due to the ads.
montag··on Show HN: Unsure Calculator – back-of-a-napkin probabilistic calculator
Thank you, I would have mentioned this myself, but forgot the name of it.
montag··on Variable duty cycle square waves with the Web Audio API
Yes... IMO, the WebAudio synthesis primitives are not particularly useful. You are so much better off discarding these primitives and rolling your own for an audio project of any significance.
