monsterix··on Indian generics and AIDS
> Indian Navy is even involved in protecting merchant shipping lanes off the Somalia coast.

Yes, it is true that Indian Navy/Coast Guard protects and also helpfully escorts maritime around that area [1].

It also protects the original untouched Sentinalese[2] tribes off the Andaman & Nicobar islands on the other side. Historically, our country has NEVER gone and attacked anyone in the past 3000 years. Sometimes because of our own resilience and other times because of our stupid prime minister.

> licence Raj, the paperwork kingdom, that ruins business opportunities all across India.

You're bang on this one. It's those 50-60 odd corrupt assholes on the top which make life hell for the rest of the population. Pretty similar to how things are here in the US, albeit the corruption part(?). Only magnified.

monsterix··on Ask HN: Which song kicks the most code out of you?
Oh I agree, instrumental music is far ahead in execution and it does appeal well to some hackers who are on the bleeding edge. I some time listen to 'Cluster one', Pink Floyd to calm myself.

Added all suggestions on this list to my list. Thanks!

monsterix··on Ask HN: Which song kicks the most code out of you?
Never heard 'em. Added to my list of new music, thanks!
monsterix··on Show HN: WebMenu, a platform to discover new web apps
This is a beautiful undertaking. Webmenu looks nice and clean, good job!

Since it's about helping upstarts and new web-apps you might wanna consider presenting more details about the apps you take up. Like information about what the app does, friction you felt, coolness etc. Just throwing in the logo/icon and the name of the app will not cut it.

In effect a critique which could either be your own or sourced via the community you intend to build will make this offering more compelling.

Most definitely you might want to keep away from presenting logos of Linkedin, Google Docs or even Trello i.e. of big, rising or successful companies. It starts looking like a hypocrisy if you do that, but obviously monetization is one concern in this spot.

Overall, it would be great to have a new web-app review destination which focuses solely on the product/founders and is zero on gossip.

monsterix··on Ask HN: Burning idea for a story you've always wanted written?
A close account of how the world/nations/family/people would look only 50 years from now? - post oil, post-anything that's supposed to die and with whatever that's supposed to be adopted.
monsterix··on Responsive HTML Emails: a Different Strategy
Nice post!

Another challenge on mobile is that most of the times images/ background-images aren't served at all. So as long as there is just text and style on your email this strategy would just work. The moment you decide to step-up the visuals, you'd start thinking why the hell does the world still use email at all?

monsterix··on Adobe Breach Impacted at Least 38 Million Users
> a huge file called “users.tar.gz” that appears to include more than 150 million username and hashed password pairs taken from Adobe.

150 MM looks like that number. Yeah Adobe is good at making things difficult the moment one steps outside of Photoshop.

monsterix··on Adobe Breach Impacted at Least 38 Million Users
At least 38 Million? I have a hunch that this is the total number of paying users that they have for their suite at all. I'd be surprised if this breach and the stolen materials do not affect their business badly.
monsterix··on How Kentucky Built the Country's Best Obamacare Website
I know few developers who worked on Kentucky's Kynect. It's apparently been executed by many contractors like hcentive, CGI etc.

IMO, it would be inappropriate to single out state employees or the contractors and appreciate only one of them. Great execution or bad one is mostly an outcome of how capable and driven the executive team is.

monsterix··on Ask HN: What are you working on and why is it cool?
Wow this looks nice! I wonder how complicated this would become for songs from Satriani, Malmstein or Steve Vai?

Why did you choose tabs which is rather weak (correct me if I'm wrong) notation?

monsterix··on This Obamacare contractor doesn’t take security seriously
> ... a broken contract award process, and decisions makers who don't understand IT.

Those two lines pretty much nail the issue at hand. Not only for IT but for other aspects of Governance as well.

monsterix··on This Obamacare contractor doesn’t take security seriously
> anything that the government funds should be open source.

Generalization to open source everything that the Government does, or taxpayers fund, might not be such a great idea. There are some projects which are supposed to be secret (Like a NSA that's focused only on anti-socials) because they give our Government an edge over others.

Probably a competent agency with an oversight to decide on open/closed aspect can help, but the subject needs much longer and detailed debate. IMO, healthcare, education, civil investigations are perfect examples where we can go completely open source. Or get disrupted the valley way.

monsterix··on This Obamacare contractor doesn’t take security seriously
Totally agree. One of the thoughts that came to my mind is that a public project like this one sh(c)ould be open source right from the beginning. That would solve a lot of quality issues on one hand, and probably the pricing will also be better for the Government/taxpayers.

While I am pretty sure that most congressmen do not get it, but there are some very qualified and awesome technical people who work in the Government. Probably, someone has to have the balls and call it open source one fine day.

monsterix··on Darpa Initiative Will Focus on Advancing Deep Brain Stimulation
That's a really interesting video on this debilitating disease. Are there any notable examples of where DBS has failed or what could entail as "the risk" of undergoing such a surgery?

I have a friend whom I can refer about this procedure.

monsterix··on [dead]
Sheesh! This capture gives me a very strange feeling. It is an interesting situation that the murderers (probably) were captured in the nick of moment. Satellite surveillance? But wow! - can we now fish the body from the lake and trace the killers?

Edit: Ok, this one is false.

monsterix··on Here’s how Apple assaulted Microsoft today — in three crushing quotes
IMHO, people still send the docs or portable files especially when they have to share final and binding contracts. There is quite a bit of lifecycle of a document after it has been created on Google Docs!
monsterix··on Here’s how Apple assaulted Microsoft today — in three crushing quotes
Last check, Google Docs didn't work on the iPad Safari. Has that changed?
monsterix··on Why are Chromebooks still a thing?
Incidentally, I do have a fresh Chromebook Pixel with its box to give away. You're right that they're certainly not for everyone. Especially, not for people who photoshop a lot and have large media files to move around. It's great from touch experience point of view though. To watch videos online, touch-n-play etc. Super awesome for those who use a lot of web apps, Google docs and things like that.
monsterix··on LinkedIn's Series B Pitch to Greylock: Pitch Advice for Entrepreneurs
Brilliant! Thanks for sharing this on HN.

This one line is simply bang on at so many levels:

...we knew that our pitch would need to steer into investors’ biggest concern: the lack of revenue.

And seemingly relevant in the current climate of 2013 again.

Nice piece of work. Can we know how you made 'em? Which tools did you use, steps that you followed? Can people fork it and add those missing glyphs to make it complete?

You might want to read the guidelines[1] before commenting on HN.

"Be civil. Don't say things you wouldn't say in a face to face conversation. When disagreeing, please reply to the argument instead of calling names."

Also do you even read before calling names? You're the only one who took the discussion away from the topic placed in here. Please note that groupthink of seven people who agreed with you doesn't make opinion of others (who disagree with you) any less relevant.

monsterix··on India to launch its first mission to Mars [video]
Compete tomorrow not today. It is a well-known player, indeed.

Rocketry space is under serious disruption [1], and quite rapidly at that. It has often been seen that a well-known player of today is quickly wiped out by a wave that they didn't foresee coming. India is definitely missing the up-starting entrepreneur-ism around rocketry, and that's where the strategy seems to be broken. Like it is for many other fronts, including public welfare.

monsterix··on India to launch its first mission to Mars [video]
> humanity on Earth has always been deep in shit.

Agreed, but at this point welfare, direction, basic education, tactical advantage, military advantage, logical thinking, karma and pretty much everything else is _exclusively_ ignored. Even in 'mericah it is now the private players doing the rocket rounds. Kind of like NASA, the big daddy, making way for the young and restless to come in and take over. Where would the strategy of having 'exclusive ISRO' stand in the near term?

monsterix··on India to launch its first mission to Mars [video]
That data is available for cheap few thousand dollars from whatever other countries have already put up there. However, I do agree that science should be kept on the front burner. Mission to mars doesn't seem a very useful one for climate study though.
monsterix··on India to launch its first mission to Mars [video]
Nice. I hope they put all our politicians on it too.

I love science, and I am from India -- but then there are a lot of other economic machinery related things that we need to figure out first. I mean the usual things which are NOT rocket science. By the time ISRO of India matures up, rocketry elsewhere will move away from public institutions to the more competitive and cut-throat marketplace of private players. So I just don't see the point, enlighten me if there is one.

Besides Indian Government should rather (and at least) be focusing on the more serious issues drowning 'our country in our own poop' -- things like corruption, poverty, malnutrition, malaria, dengue, power outages etc. What not!

[Update: Wow. So many reactions, some name-calling too. All answers address the usual aspects of 'why science should run in parallel and not in series' and other advantages. These are UNDERSTOOD, for if they're not why even discuss?

Can someone explain how ISRO is gonna compete tomorrow, and do the same space exploration at a competitive cost, when the rest of the world would have moved to space industry being managed by private players and even start-ups? Someone indicated below that ISRO operates on a shoe-string budget. Can we fix that at least? No, kill the messenger instead.]

monsterix··on Kleiner Perkins makes major changes
I am curious about the implications actually. Wondering how much is the impact of crowd-funding / public micro-funding on deal quality and deal flow for these traditional VC firms (Mattermark anything?)? Why are the VCs lowering their fund size so rapidly? I know it's still early on to even ask this, but a discussion went on those lines in one of the hallway conversations recently.
monsterix··on Filthy India Photos, Chinese Netizen Reactions (*Graphic Images Warning*)
> what's a few dead bodies and rotting corpses?

'Few' or thousands or may be millions, who knows? Is there some kind of data or statistical study to help here?

Calling that there is filth elsewhere too isn't really a great argument to support your shrug. It is understandable though that it hurts to see one's homeland in poor light. It's a good emotion to have - love your land - should be used to emphasize and drive clean up.
