monort··on Behemoth, bully, thief: how the English language is taking over the planet
Ancient Romans just didn't use weeks, so the translation is probably a modern one. The closest to a weekend is a market day: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nundinae

monort··on Nordic Ice Skating on Thin, Black Ice in Sweden Is an Art and a Science
I think the first use of that sound was in War Of The Worlds in 1953, they didn't even had lasers at the time :) I couldn't find any explanation, how they arrived at the sound (it's supposedly just electric guitar + reverberation).

monort··on Survival of the Richest
I don't think the threat level changed greatly, the most likely scenario is a mistake launch and crazy officer. Do you know Russia has a system of automatic retaliation attack?

As for the war threat - both sides had their hotheads during the Cold War, but in the end they were overruled.

monort··on Palliative sedation, an end-of-life practice that is legal everywhere
Even under general anesthesia some patients feel the pain

monort··on Survival of the Richest
Russia and US have 1600 deployed warheads each, ready to fly any minute. I don't understand why most people don't consider this as threat. We are living with a gun to our heads.
monort··on Plastic recycling is a problem consumers can't solve
Maybe it depends on the city, but often it's a municipal government granted monopoly. E.g. in San Francisco it's Recology.

https://www.aoausa.com/magazine/?p=4982

I bet, each city, that enforces waste sorting, has a monopoly.

monort··on Plastic recycling is a problem consumers can't solve
I can get the car picked-up for repair if I want to. Where can I subscribe for a service "picking up unsorted garbage"? The problem is that garbage collectors are granted monopoly and use it to extract free labor from customers.
monort··on Show HN: B2blaze – A Backblaze B2 library for Python
Speed of light affects latency, not throughput. TCP works bad with large delays, that's why it's recommended to use several TCP connections to saturate the link.
monort··on Botswana MP proposes lifting elephant hunting ban
How would you answer the same question from a vegetarian? We eat meat for "fun" too, though we would be able to survive on plants.

The answer is that most people don't care about animal suffering.

monort··on This Is What a Nuclear Bomb Looks Like
Mutual nuclear disarmament is the obvious answer (lookup the START treaty), unfortunately it's a slow process and hopefully there will be another president by the renewal time, as Trump doesn't like the treaty.

Regarding the access to the button, would you prefer to have egoistic, emotional man or rational and cold one, like Gen. Buck from "Dr. Strangelove"?

monort··on Model predicts we're the only advanced civilization in the observable universe
This logic makes any birth unethical too. You are just confining your children to a prison of very large generation ship Earth, with the aim to "procreate in order to produce more prisoners like themselves".
monort··on Suicides Have Increased. Is This an Existential Crisis?
Do you realize that some people feel stress when someone comes unannounced? Opt-in interaction like in your startup is so much better!
monort··on A world of free movement would be $78T richer
Race to the bottom is what makes a progress.

Would you prefer to work a month to be able to afford a shirt, like it was just a few centuries before? Or do you prefer when "race to the bottom" made the cost of the same shirt into a few hours of work?

I have the same experience with Instagram, but it's still worse, than in older days, because there is no desktop client. Discussing anything deep is practically impossible.
monort··on Things I Learned in the Gulag
It's not a religion, it's an ethical system. I think ethical system is only a subset of religion.
