monological··on Ask HN: Are people considering moving off of Fly.io?
Had way too many errors trying to set things up, so I just switched to render.com, which I love.
monological··on Ask HN: What have you created that deserves a second chance on HN?
https://prodbump.com/ - sell digital products, memberships and more in less than one minute.

You keep 99% of sales after payment processing fees. No monthly fees either.

monological··on Gumroad Increases Fee to 10%
You should check out prodbump.com, they only charge 1% (plus stripe fees). Seems like they have a pretty clean interface.
monological··on Mom handcuffed, jailed for 8-year-old son walking half a mile
Japan has entered the chat...

In Japan, children are encouraged from early age to be independent. They even take the subway and bus by themselves, albeit it's significantly safer there than in other parts of the world. Still though, I think people in America have gone off the deep end.

monological··on People have been having less sex, whether they’re teenagers or 40-somethings
Serendipitous conversation has taken a nosedive because everyone is constantly staring at their phone. All the normal feedback loops are out of whack. This also affected fashion and even interior design. People just wear sweatpants and athletic wear everywhere and almost all coffee shops and stores have the same design aesthetic. Regression to the mean and mass addiction is wrecking the world. “Bicycle for the mind”. Yea right, more like a ball and chain for the masses.
monological··on Ask HN: How to deal with burnout and its consequences?
The reality is that deep down in your soul, this is not something that you really want to be doing with your life. Unfortunately in modern society, we have to trade our time and focus, staring at a piece of glass all day, just so we can survive. It’s absolutely insane if you think about it. I’d bet that most ADHD, depression, anxiety is caused because we see no end in sight working on these meaningless tasks. My advice is to find something you love and also adds value to society. Start very small and watch it grow…
monological··on Imagen Video: high definition video generation with diffusion models
What everyone is missing is that these AI image/video generators lack _taste_. These tools just regurgitate a mishmash of images from it's training set, without any "feeling". What you're going to tell me that you can train them to have feeling? It's never going to happen.

If EE jobs paid $500k a year like SWE (in the Bay), I assure you you’d have a lot more. It’s all about incentives.
monological··on Many single Japanese people in their 20s have never been on a date – survey
Dating in the west almost feels like an interview these days, at least in the Bay Area. “So where do you see yourself in 5-10 years”? What’s next, you going to ask me to invert a binary tree?
monological··on Ask HN: What is the Ethereum VM's total computing power?
You are correct. However, they are working on sharding at the moment, which will allow for different contracts to run at the same time.
monological··on Tell HN: Turned 44 today and I'm lost
Start going to church. Believe in something bigger than yourself. Honestly, nothing gained on this earth will satisfy you. Everyone always hates hearing this, but it's the truth in my opinion.
monological··on Show HN: Nanojob.com – Micro Task Job Board
Hi HN,

Wanted to show you all what I've made. Nanojob is a job board for micro tasks. I came up with the idea because I was often overwhelmed working on startups as a solo founder. I found other freelance sites too bloated and cumbersome. What I wanted was a minimal job board that would let me just fire off quick tasks from my to-do list, and so I decided to build it.

I welcome any feedback and criticism. Please go easy though, it's just me working on it.

monological··on Ask HN: Selling hardware company assets/IP
> More to the point I am in awe of what you have accomplished on your own. Curious as to how you funded the work to date. The book value of your work, equipment procured and product development costs would have to be very substantial.

Thank you. It was a lot of hard work.

First off, I moved from the Bay Area to a cheaper city to cut back on my expenses. I was also able to get some seed money from family and I had some money saved up that I ended up using.

> Have you considered going down the aquihire path? Have you explored the option of selling the IP, etc to your former employer or one of their competitors?

Yes, I was approached by a former boss of mine from a well known semiconductor company. They were interested in purchasing a few units and having me work for them. I suggested they aquihire the company. They would get access to all the secret sauce IP and I could work for them. However, unfortunately they were not interesting in going that direction.

> Whatever you do, don't rush. You have created very valuable IP and deserve to profit from your years of dedication to your vision.

Good advice. I will only sell if the price is right and their vision matches with mine.

monological··on Ask HN: Selling hardware company assets/IP
Thank you. You're right sometimes we just need to stop and reflect on all that we've done. It's true, you can do everything right, but luck plays a big factor in how things turn out.
monological··on Ask HN: Selling hardware company assets/IP
Thank you friend. I appreciate that.
monological··on Omicron at 100% Prevalence, Colorado
But now we’ll be able to reach herd immunity. Very mild and highly transmissible. This is the best possible outcome.
monological··on Pfizer CEO says fourth vaccine shot may eventually be needed
It's 2024, Omega variant has just landed, NYTimes screams of societal collapse, Pfizer CEO says 10th booster may be needed.

Meanwhile Standford researchers reiterate that the "fatality rates for those < 70 years ranges from 0.00% to 0.31%, with crude and corrected medians of 0.05%"[0]. And that study is from before the vaccine was even globally administered. How much lower is it now? Clearly the virus has become endemic and this is just a money grab.

monological··on Ask HN: Why is everything changing too fast?
Because modern day companies are broken. They hire engineers whose raison d'être is to "work" and pump out features, regardless if products reach a level of stability and maturity that most would considered finished. The entire ecosystem is busted. Look at Dropbox for example. Steve Jobs famously said that it's a feature not a product. Why do they hire thousands of engineers and keep adding things that no one really wants? Because they can't just fire people and so execs and PMs keep generating fake work until products bloat out of control. What else are they going to do? Are they really going to admit that there isn't anything else left for them to do and get laid off? Never.
monological··on Ask HN: I feel so shallow and dumb when I see what other smart people are doing
“When you are content to be simply yourself and don't compare or compete, everyone will respect you.” ― Lao Tzu
monological··on Peter Thiel – Artificial General Intelligence Isn't Happening
> Those things, he thinks, are uncertain. We should worry about what’s happening now in everyday time, to which, in his view, too few are paying heed: The growth of total AI-based surveillance and the disappearance of privacy.

That’s real rich coming from the founder of Palantir

monological··on Ask HN: Another job board? Need feedback on the idea
Upwork does 20% for first $500, then 10% up to $10k, then 5% more than $10k, but it's per client. So I figured 7% flat rate isn't bad.

monological··on Ask HN: Another job board? Need feedback on the idea
I made https://www.nanojob.com, which is a job board for devs focusing on, well, nano jobs. I struggled to get people to use it. My advice to you is don't waste your time. Getting a marketplace off the ground is notoriously difficult due to the chicken and egg problem. Secondly, competition in this space is fierce. Unless you have some next level product differentiation, it'll most likely fail to achieve critical mass.

monological··on California outlawed all-white-male boardrooms – reshaping corporate America
Genuinely curious how women would feel if they were given a job not based purely on merit and credentials, but their gender. Isn’t that a slap in the face? Like, “yea there were other much more qualified candidates, but we just have to fill this quota.” That’s what would be nagging me in the back of my mind if I was a women.
monological··on China declares cryptocurrency deals ‘illegal’
Oh it’s not fundamental? What do you think would happen to the value of the dollar if the military didn’t exist and the US was invaded by a foreign county. Connect the dots.
monological··on China declares cryptocurrency deals ‘illegal’
That’s not what I said. It’s simple. Bitcoin has value because of proof-of-work which uses a ton of energy. US dollar has value because it’s propped up by the military which uses MORE energy (more so because there is no more gold standard)
monological··on China declares cryptocurrency deals ‘illegal’
You’re talking about borrowing and lending money, which becomes a moot point, when a foreign country invades your country and burns everything down. That doesn’t happen because we have the military and nukes that act as deterrents. That in turn props up the dollar and allows it to have the value it does.
monological··on China declares cryptocurrency deals ‘illegal’
If crypto was actually adopted as a means of buying and selling real world goods, instead of just being held as a speculative asset, then it would consume much less energy and be more efficient than the entire system, namely the military, that props up the value of the dollar. And that’s just the US military. Of course, the reason why you’re able to mine in the first place is because we have peace, due to the military. So calculating becomes a little more complicated than just crypto consumption versus military consumption.
