monocularvision··on Apple and Google must allow other in-app payment systems, Korean law declares
So then they don’t market it is a general purpose computer? How would you solve for that?
monocularvision··on TSMC hikes chip prices up to 20% amid supply shortage
US Manufacturing is still going. In fact, we manufacture more than ever. Folks conflate manufacturing with manufacturing _jobs_. Our manufacturing is more efficient then ever which is why you constantly hear this false refrain that US manufacturing is down or gone.
monocularvision··on How to bypass Sprint/T-Mobile 2FA in under 5 minutes
The point isn’t that you will have an issue using a random string, it’s that attackers who know you do so will be able to convince a customer service rep they are you by answering the question “I just put in some random keystrokes”
monocularvision··on Patterns in Confusing Explanations
There was recently some explanation of Kafka that was done as a children’s book about beavers or something. I found it utter baffling where most folks seemed to sing its praises.
monocularvision··on Chip shortage: Toyota to cut global production by 40%
The government tries to keep medical care expensive to avoid competition that might result in some instability so the cure is … government running health care.
monocularvision··on 1Password 8 will be subscription only and won’t support local vaults
I held off on the new YNAB for a very long time before switching about a year and a half ago. I absolutely love the new version and the syncing works so much better than before. And the new iOS client is loads better.
monocularvision··on 1Password 8 will be subscription only and won’t support local vaults
For me the most important features are 1. Family support and 2. Cross platform (see #1… we have some Windows machines in the family)

If it were just me, the iCloud stuff would probably be enough.

monocularvision··on 1Password for Mac Moving to Electron
Any suggestions for a family looking to share some passwords and not others? This, for me, is the killer feature for 1Password’s subscription service and why I happily pay them each year.
monocularvision··on WhatsApp lead and other tech experts fire back at Apple’s Child Safety plan
> the image is fingerprinted on device and when uploaded to iCloud that fingerprint is compared with the "dodgy images" fingerprints and an alert raised if a threshold of matches is reached (what's the threshold and with whom?)

Nope. The comparison is done on the device and the threshold is set there as well.

I am not sure how alarmed I am yet at this whole affair but I do know that maybe 50% of posts I read about this have glaringly incorrect information which definitely dampers my alarmism.

monocularvision··on I went to the office for the first time. I fucking hated it
Yes, just rebuild society instead. Simple.
monocularvision··on Swift Protocol Oriented Programming and Testing
While you have to declare it, you can do the same in Swift using an extension.

monocularvision··on Designing a URL-based query syntax for GraphQL
The main problem was that it was invented by Microsoft.
monocularvision··on A New Future for Icanhazip
This exact thing happened to me on an American Airlines flight one time. It seemed to get fixed later.
monocularvision··on iPadOS 15
I’m curious how much Xcode Cloud has to play a role in the process or if it can be done entirely on device.
monocularvision··on iPadOS 15
Why does software engineering never get included in the “creative” category?

I would love, for my personal use, to replace my MBP with an iPad but it just won’t be possible until there is some method for executing arbitrary code, which I see as a requirement for software engineering. Even if they just made Virtualization.framework available so you could spin up a Linux VM so things were totally sandboxed, I would be able to actually use the thing as a computer.

The reason for preferring this over a MBP comes down to several reasons: touch, form factor, pencil support and honest for “everyday” use, iPadOS is better than macOS.

monocularvision··on Amazon Prime inflates prices, using the false promise of ‘free shipping’
If you can go to another site, fill up the same cart and end up spending less money, doesn’t that sort of disprove the point the article is trying to make?
monocularvision··on USB-C is about to go from 100W to 240W, enough to power beefier laptops
So…. with a lightning bolt then.
monocularvision··on An iOS app update that annoys me
It’s 6 flipping dollars a year. For an app that relies on a third party API and needs fairly regular updates. While I am not a big fan of subscriptions, feels like a good fit for Tweetbot.
monocularvision··on Amazon started a Twitter war because Jeff Bezos was pissed
So better for these folks to have retail jobs that pay far less? Not sure I understand your argument here.

monocularvision··on Apple has threatened to remove Amphetamine from the App Store
The app was _featured_ in the App Store. They didn’t get away with anything.
monocularvision··on California plan for wealth tax on anyone who spends 60 days a year in the state
That is capital gains tax. Not a wealth tax.
monocularvision··on FTC commissioner met with Apple regarding Facebook’s iOS 14 complaints
Have you maybe turned off the ability for apps to ask at all? I have.
monocularvision··on About iSH’s pending removal from the App Store
I run youtube-dl using StaSh inside of Pythonista.
monocularvision··on The State of SwiftUI
Swizzling uses the Objective-C runtime, which in turns handles the message passing mechanism. Unless you inherit from an NSObject, you can’t swizzle in Swift.
monocularvision··on Does Facebook pay Apple 30% of revenue derived from ads made within its iOS app?
Like selling their physical products on Amazon. Amazon famously would not allow the Apple TV to be sold on their site until after this deal was made.
monocularvision··on Epic Games has filed legal papers in response to Apple [pdf]
This is not true. There is no rule that states you must offer the same price when signing up if your service is multi platform. The rules only state you can’t discourage In-App purchase. I use several services where I signed up on the website because it was substantially cheaper than in-app.
monocularvision··on Apple says game streaming services violate App Store policies
They work on iOS devices.
