monocularvision··on Application-as-a-Function Thinking
1. I can’t say I have found any real downsides yet. We have had to make improvements to support new capabilities, but it has been surprisingly easy to do so. Our most recent improvement was to formalize the concept of MVVM so that our ViewModels essentially acted in the same way as our Feature types. It allows us to continue using almost the same pattern at individual screen that we have been using at the feature level.

Our next big effort will be fitting the architecture into SwiftUI, which I think will actually be also straightforward since SwiftUI is extremely functional.

2. Onboarding is probably the biggest “downside”. I would say there is absolutely a learning curve that requires some investment but everyone I speak to about it has been pretty positive after getting over that hurdle. And it feels like our productivity is very high.

3. Android does not follow the same pattern. I am planning on sharing your article with the team though. :-)

monocularvision··on Application-as-a-Function Thinking
Love this, thanks for sharing. This is fundamentally how our iOS application is modeled. We were highly inspired by Bernhardt’s talk and the Elm Architecture.

It has lead to a very modular and maintainable app that has been very easy to test without ridiculous mocking you usually see when needing to interact with object-oriented / imperative frameworks like Cocoa Touch.

monocularvision··on Twilio to lay off 11% of workforce
I love seeing people defend this statement by basically saying “it actually meant nothing”… as if that is a really strong defense.
monocularvision··on Bank tells customers to disable updates and not upgrade to iOS 16
As one who works on the iOS app for a major US financial company, my guess would be they included some “security” tool/SDK that is having problems getting upgraded to iOS16.
monocularvision··on Xcode Cloud overview
Yes, can we get the title updated to fix my twitching eye?
monocularvision··on 1Password delisting forum posts critical of their new Electron based 1Password 8
The mobile app is still fully native.
monocularvision··on “It’s time for Apple to fix texting”
Brilliant.
monocularvision··on Apple: Using a camera cover might damage your MacBook's display
That’s because the word is “multichannel”. Safari on iOS, at least, doesn’t find “channel”. Not sure about other browsers.
monocularvision··on Why are McDonald’s Self Service Kiosks so hackable?
I am a huge fan as well. I usually feel like I am spending much less time during the checkout process than I used to.

Sometimes though, when all the checkout lanes are in use, I dream of a licensing scheme for use. So many people take _forever_ to checkout, you would think this technology was introduced in the last month.

When this happens I like to play a game where I race to check myself out before everyone else (that has already started since I am taking the latest emptied spot). I would say I win this game probably 80% of the time.

monocularvision··on WorldWideWeb.app
As mentioned in another thread: not anymore.
monocularvision··on Viruses that were on hiatus during Covid are back, behaving in unexpected ways
If you take out 18 and 19 years old, that is no longer true.

We have way too many firearm deaths in this country but the way these studies choose their age ranges always feel like folks are in search of the conclusion they desire.

monocularvision··on Sound Blaster (DOS)
I am so blown away by how close our stories are. Got this exact setup from grandparents for my 13th birthday, which was a HUGE surprise. I remember sitting on the sidelines of my younger brother’s football games while I read the DOS manual.

I ended up buying a Sound Blaster Pro and installing that. We were absolutely blown away by the sound coming from that thing, specifically Links 386.

Oh, and I ended up working at Egghead Software for a couple years in the mid-90’s.

monocularvision··on About iCloud Private Relay
Apple makes the device and OS. They will always have the ability to see the data.
monocularvision··on ‎Cracking the Code: Sneakers at 30
Love it. For me that movie was TRON. I was 6(?) years old and I knew computers were for me.
monocularvision··on FBI Didn't Knock Down a Suspect's Door Because 'It Was an Affluent Neighborhood'
At this point, I look at the NRA in the same way I look at the ACLU. Both were issue advocacy groups but both have expanded into a general partisan / left-right fundraising machine thanks to more and more polarization.

Many gun-owning folks I know have joined other pro-second amendment advocacy groups in disappointment.

monocularvision··on Show HN: Warp, a Rust-based terminal
I have been using the built-in macOS terminal every day for years now.
monocularvision··on ReVanced
Check out Vinegar (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/vinegar-tube-cleaner/id1591303...) It is so good I am almost afraid to mention it and it get too popular. No affiliation at all with the product, just a happy user.

(edited to remove incorrect statement)

monocularvision··on We’re the founders of Substack, we just launched an iOS app. AUA
As an iOS developer, I scrolled down to find if there was any mention of tech and I am glad to find it! I have to say, I was taken by surprise by the launch because as a huge fan of Substack I was always watching the career boards and never saw anything except web and backend engineers. Can you talk about the size of your team or is it just you?

One feature request: would love to be able to collapse comments/replies like you can do on the web.

Thanks for the great app!

monocularvision··on First look: adding type annotations to JavaScript
I am mildly confused by your objection. It appears the proposal is to allow type annotations to appear as essentially no-op instructions. It isn’t adding a type system to JS.
monocularvision··on Evening use of light-emitting eReaders negatively affects sleep (2014)
My anecdotal two-cents:

I will stay up nearly indefinitely in bed if I read my phone or iPad. Read the same material on my Kindle Paperwhite and it can be difficult to stay awake more than a few minutes.

I don’t know if it has anything to do with the difference in screen types, as my Kindle does have a backlight but it is so night and day for me, I am predisposed to believe anything that states there is a mechanism for my experience.

monocularvision··on Phone is still the best way to order pizza
Misuse of push notifications means an immediate loss of push notification permissions for me.
monocularvision··on Phone is still the best way to order pizza
Yes, this. I am about ready to give up on Chipotle entirely because of the incredible lie that is their Ready to Pickup time. Last time I was there I would have saved time if I had just waited in their incredibly long line and ordered that way instead of doing them the favor of ordering ahead.
monocularvision··on Ask HN: Good open source alternatives to Google Analytics?
Every time this question / topic comes up, I read through the replies and can never find one for Mobile apps. I guess it might be time to start my own.
monocularvision··on The optional chaining operator, “modern” browsers, and my mom
The iPad released in 2017 is the 5th generation which can get iOS 15. Perhaps it was an earlier iPad?
monocularvision··on Show HN: A tool to send push notifications to your phone, written in Go
While not built-in, $5 and this app is pretty close to what you want: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/pushover-notifications/id50608...
monocularvision··on YouTube is banning anti-vaccine activists and blocking all anti-vaccine content
My wife’s theory is there would be less hesitancy if the vaccines were being distributed through people’s primary care physicians instead of at mass vaccination sites or Walgreens. People may distrust the media, the government and all sorts of other nebulous groups, but they largely trust their doctor.
monocularvision··on Hospitals lift curtain on prices, revealing giant swings in pricing by procedure
I personally know several families that are a part of these co-ops and they have had incredibly expensive things fully paid for. What makes you call them a scam?
monocularvision··on Introducing Age Verification
This is so absolutely spot on. I have my kids’ fake birthday memorized because I use it so often. As soon as you enter a birthday that actually would mean under 13, be prepared for _nothing to work_.
monocularvision··on The ownership and future of Mullvad VPN
Civil disobedience means accepting the consequences of your actions to affect public perception and motivate change. Using a VPN is the opposite of that.
