monocularvision··on I Hacked the Magic Mouse
I love the touch sensitive surface and prefer it over any other mouse with a spinning disc for scrolling. Is there another mouse out there that has a similar surface? I would switch in a heartbeat because I agree with the rest of your criticisms.
monocularvision··on Show HN: Timbre – An app that finds the best sounds for your sleep
I realize that any time someone posts an app there are complaints about pricing, but here I was expecting a flat rate since it appears the entire app is local so there shouldn’t be recurring costs only to find it is $30 a year? I get wanting to have a sustainable business and that subscriptions are the future but that seems a bit off considering the lack of online component. Unless I am missing something?
monocularvision··on Pgroll: zero-downtime, reversible schema migrations for Postgres
When performing a rollout of new code across multiple machines, you can expect to have both your old code and new code running at the same time. That’s why you might want to support both the old and new schema at the same time.
monocularvision··on Control Center on macOS is always re-rendering its SwiftUI causing 1% CPU load
I believe we purchased it around 2018 or so. I didn’t look at the power cycles, just got the warning about needing maintenance.
monocularvision··on EU tells Apple to open everything up to its rivals
Do you honestly think that the incentives are that simple? Personally, I find that private companies provide me with way better, faster and more efficient services and benefits than any government agency ever has. But maybe that’s just the experience in the US.
monocularvision··on EU tells Apple to open everything up to its rivals
Do you realize how it sounds to compare the power of a private corporation that sells phones and computers to government agencies that wield the power of literal violence?
monocularvision··on Control Center on macOS is always re-rendering its SwiftUI causing 1% CPU load
My wife’s Intel-based laptop got considerably slower in the last year or so. I tried everything I could but nothing seemed to return it to its original performance.

Then she got a warning that the battery needed servicing. After getting it replaced (and the Apple employee warning us several times that it might not help performance), the laptop was back to its previous state. My theory is that the battery running warmer was causing the CPU to throttle. Or perhaps cleaning out the machine while replacing the battery helped it thermally. Or maybe both.

monocularvision··on Public restrooms are hard to find in America
100% agree.

In the Southwest, I would say 95% of the places I visit have plenty of public restrooms if you count businesses that have unlocked bathrooms. Fast food, coffee shops, grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants… nearly every public business.

When my wife and I visited Scotland, we were flabbergasted at how difficult it could be to find a restroom when we were driving the countryside. Even when we would find signs of civilization, it was hard to find open businesses with restrooms.

monocularvision··on Do not host podcast feeds behind Cloudfare
Would be nice if someone at CloudFlare or Substack saw this. I noticed one of my podcasts not appearing in Overcast and happened to run across this in my Mastodon feed.
monocularvision··on The video call revolution is dead
Unfortunately Continuity Camera requires both devices to be logged-in to the same iCloud account which is a no-go in many large corporate environments.
monocularvision··on SwiftUI Data Flow 2023
It doesn’t appear this was submitted by the author but if she sees this, may I suggest an edit?

When referring to a property or variable that does not change over time, consider the word “constant” instead of “static”. Swift has the idea of a “static property” that means a property associated with the type instead of an instance (as do many other languages).

monocularvision··on Watch TV from the 90s and earlier
Channels has this feature (“Virtual Channels”): https://getchannels.com/library/
monocularvision··on Analysis of whether unit testing obviates static type checking (2012)
This is the most well thought out commentary on this topic I have ever read. Thank you.
monocularvision··on Court strikes down limits on filming of police in Arizona
Funny you should say that but the former governor (Doug Ducey) who signed this law was actually a pretty old-school, conservative Republican. I was very disappointed he signed this bill considering the rest of his record. I get the feeling he knew it wouldn’t stand legal challenges (but it was still disappointing).

In a saner Republican Party he would have been a good Senator or even Presidential nominee. Unfortunately, that isn’t the age we live in.

monocularvision··on Show HN: High school transcript generator for homeschoolers
This is what the HSLDA is for.

Colleges have become increasingly comfortable with accepting homeschool high school transcripts both because of their increasing regularity but also because of the actions of the HSLDA. One of the reasons we’ve been members for well over a decade.

monocularvision··on Apollo will close down on June 30th
The problem I experience with Mastodon is it seems like a total echo chamber. Very little interesting conversation most of the time. I still find good links to content there though.
monocularvision··on Had a call with Reddit to discuss pricing
Oh please. I paid for ad-free Apollo a long time ago and the prompts to upgrade to the subscription client are extremely rare and not obtrusive.
monocularvision··on Apple brings Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro to iPad
Being a full time iOS engineer means having to tell folks it is “Xcode” not “XCode” every time see it.
monocularvision··on Apple passwords deserve an app
Am I the only person on Earth that needs sharing of passwords among my family? Any time folks bring up password solutions, they are always missing this requirement for me.

1Password is a life-saver in this regards. All my kids have their own vaults but for the little ones I have them use a shared vault between my wife and me so we have access to their passwords. I can also easily share passwords for services like Netflix so the kids don’t have to bug me.

It has been great for teaching kids about password hygiene (what makes for a good password) and management (don’t reuse passwords!).

And it being cross-platform is great for my older kids with gaming PCs.

monocularvision··on Zero to Nix, an unofficial, opinionated, gentle introduction to Nix
Yeah “Quick Start” is really a misleading title for this “section” as it is really the meat of the site itself.
monocularvision··on We invested 10% to pay back tech debt
I consider “code quality” in our codebase to largely be defined by “does it follow our opinionated architecture?”

If the answer is “No”, it can be difficult for others to understand. Reworking that code to follow our architecture generally makes it easier for us all to follow.

One might need to not follow the architecture because it doesn’t handle something new to the app. When that happens, we try, first, to update the architecture to be able to handle the requirement and then implement the feature. But if that isn’t possible, we plan to clean up the debt as soon as we can after shipping.

Overall, it has worked remarkably well for our team and has led to what I consider the “cleanest” code base I have ever worked on. But it is dependent upon us having a shared understanding of how we implement features.

monocularvision··on Meta Quest Pro – Bad AR Passthrough
For me, the real “killer” VR experience is playing Walkabout Mini Golf with a friend remotely on Meta Quest 2’s. I have never felt like a remote person was right _there_ as I have when playing that game. And this is with silly, head-only avatars.

The combination of such realistic feeling gameplay and multiplayer is way more compelling than I thought it would be.

monocularvision··on Fusion energy breakthrough by Livermore Lab
It’s a real bummer to me that hype around fusion has faded so much because of the false hopes that this sort of thing barely registers on HN anymore.
monocularvision··on The Future of Foundation
While I feel like Swift missed the opportunity to become a popular language outside of Apple platforms, this is still fantastic news. Having the source code available for Foundation could make debugging things much easier in addition to being able to fix issues! There really is nothing more frustrating when working with Apple platforms over not being able to ever fix things. I get jealous of my Android colleagues in this area.
monocularvision··on FTC seeks to block Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard
10 years.
monocularvision··on MagSpoof: Wireless Magstrip Spoofer
NFC adoption has been improving in the US but still far too many big retailers that still won’t accept it, even when they have the equipment.
monocularvision··on Show HN: A native macOS client for Apache Kafka
Love seeing folks create new native macOS apps. Thanks for this!
monocularvision··on Why is Rosetta 2 fast?
The bitcode Apple used for their platforms was at a much, much lower level than bytecode used on Android.
monocularvision··on Application-as-a-Function Thinking
It’s really as simple as this:

1. Create a struct (value type in Swift) that implements a protocol (interface) to serve as your ViewModel 2. The main methods to implement are both called “update”. One is called automatically by our infrastructure when Feature state (state that exists across screens) changes. The other is called by the developer in their view controllers to pass along user actions (or other UIKit events). 3. The developer subscribed to all VM changes and updates the view in response. This subscription is done via Combine which is Apple’s FRP framework.

I am planning on writing more about this and the rest of our architecture in the future, hopefully.

monocularvision··on Replit Mobile App
Huge fan of Pythonista. Hadn’t heard about play.js. I will check it out! Thanks.
