mono442··on Japan's gamble to turn island of Hokkaido into global chip hub
High energy prices are a self-imposed problem. The price of electricity is heavily dependent on the price of the most expensive energy source. Electricity from fossil fuels is expensive in European Union due to emissions trading system. A coal-fired power plant pays around 2x more for the emissions than for the coal itself. I don't know how the maths work for a natural gas plant but gas is more expensive in Europe anyway compared to the US.

At least European countries excel at introducing new regulations and taxes.
mono442··on Build desktop applications using Go and Web Technologies
I wouldn't exactly call Flutter native. It uses its own rendering engine and doesn't necessarily behave like operating system native controls. It is not really different from using electron.
mono442··on Racket v9.0
Speaking of lisp, if I wanted to use a lisp nowadays, what would be the best choice, common lisp, clojure or some scheme implementation?
mono442··on Brazil charges 31 people in major carbon credit fraud investigation
Did they even really do anything wrong? This whole emission trading thing is a bordeline scam anyway, they just didn't have the right connections so they weren't allowed to profit from this and got caught.
mono442··on Brazil charges 31 people in major carbon credit fraud investigation
European Union forces some sectors to buy permits for co2 emissions.
mono442··on What Killed Perl?
Yep, there're all sorts of things like this in Perl. Its semantics has always been confusing to me.
mono442··on What Killed Perl?
I think it is due to the fact that Perl has some confusing bits like those variable prefixes ($@%), the lack of function arguments (I know that this has changed recently), not really great error handling, etc and so people started using languages which seemed easier to use like Python.
mono442··on Production-Grade Container Deployment with Podman Quadlets – Larvitz Blog
All of them are trying to create something which seems declarative on top of a mutable system.

In my experience, it only works decently well when a special care is taken of when writing playbooks.

mono442··on Why use OpenBSD?
To be honest I don't really see a reason to use a *BSD system myself other than just for the sake of using something different and less mainstream. FreeBSD had some advantages in the past but nowadays Linux has caught up in features.
mono442··on Ask HN: Is Computer Science still a good choice?
I mean, it is probably country dependent. In my country in Europe a medical doctor right out of the university makes around the same as a senior software developer and the difference only gets bigger with time.
mono442··on Ask HN: Is Computer Science still a good choice?
I doesn't seem so. It looks like there's a huge oversupply of software engineering and that will only make the salaries go lower.

I think something like a medical doctor or a dentist is a much safer bet. They have basically always been able to maintain high salaries for their work.

mono442··on Kubernetes Is Your Private Cloud
To be fair, even at a small scale something like k3s is usable and not that hard to run.
mono442··on How the UK lost its shipbuilding industry
I can't speak for the whole Europie but in my experience those kind of jobs just don't really pay well. They kind of make sense when living in a cheaper area but I personally wouldn't imagine actually making ends meet from this kind of job in a capital city in my country.
mono442··on Hiring a developer as a small indie studio in 2025
To be fair, it is more difficult to lay off in Germany so the company takes more risk.
mono442··on Europe converged rapidly on the United States before stagnating
Are you ready to live in a 300 sq feet shoebox apartment instead of a normal single family house?
mono442··on Europe to decide if 6 GHz is shared between Wi-Fi and cellular networks
How would this even work when the devices are already on sale and people are using them?
mono442··on Opencloud – An alternative to Nextcloud written in Go
It is not really suited for software which need to maintain long lived connections and that's the case with nextcloud when uploading or downloading large files.
mono442··on Discord customer service data breach leaks user info and scanned photo IDs
Is this true even for financial services like for example cryptocurrency exchanges?
mono442··on EU age verification app not planning desktop support
Well, obviously there are differences, but some overreaching and, I believe, unrealistic policies, such as the EU's climate policies, are somewhat reminiscent of the Soviet Union's central planning.
