mono442··on Europe sleepwalked into yet another energy crisis
The price of the coal actually doesn't matter much since the european union emissions trading system heavily penalizes burning it.
mono442··on Europe sleepwalked into yet another energy crisis
If they stuck with coal for producing electricity, it wouldn't such a huge problem.
mono442··on Iran war energy shock sparks global push to reduce fossil fuel dependence
That's not much. Projects listed there can't store energy for winter needs.
mono442··on Iran war energy shock sparks global push to reduce fossil fuel dependence
Solar and wind are intermittent. Grid scale energy storage is not even a thing yet.
mono442··on Judge orders restoration of Voice of America
I guess that is what happens when you don't stuff the courts with loyal judges.
mono442··on Jepsen: MariaDB Galera Cluster 12.1.2
I would kinda expect that. MySQL hasn't been designed to be a distributed database from the beginning and it's usually hard to make it work later on.
mono442··on Ask HN: How is AI-assisted coding going for you professionally?
I almost don't write any code by hand anymore and was able to take up a second part-time job thanks to genai.
mono442··on Honda is killing its EVs
ICE cars are still the majority of new cars being sold and it'll still take a while for EVs to become more popular.
mono442··on The MacBook Neo
That's interesting. In my country ThinkPad E14 16/512 is 37% more expensive and comes with garbage 60% srgb screen. It's actually more expensive than MacBook air M4 16/512.
mono442··on Why Do They Want to Get Rid of Software Engineers?
It's natural to reduce the cost of doing business.
mono442··on Germany's Solar Boom Eases Power Costs as Gas Price Jumps
That's true and on top of that the EU heavily taxes CO2 emissions which makes the problem even worse. If not for the EU ETS, they could just go back to burning coal for electricity which is cheap and abundant everywhere.
mono442··on "I Can't Do That, Dave" – No Agent Yet
slop
mono442··on Tech bros are lying to you about the MacBook Neo
But won't it be slow and provide a bad experience?
mono442··on Tech bros are lying to you about the MacBook Neo
I agree that the lack of backlight keyboard and touch ID isn't a serious limitation but 8 GB of ram would be probably be hardly usable, especially on tahoe.
mono442··on TeX Live 2026 is available for download now
latex error messages are basically indecipherable to me which makes it unusable for anything
mono442··on The nightmare war scenario is becoming reality in energy markets
especially bad for european union countries since they can't switch electricity generation to coal because it would push the ets price through the roof
mono442··on MacBook Neo
With only 8 GB of RAM would this be usable even for web browsing?
mono442··on Simplifying Application Architecture with Modular Design and MIM
The article seems written soundly but I can't stop thinking that all these patterns discribed there are just a huge overengineering and are solving problems which don't really exist.
mono442··on Emails to Outlook.com rejected due to a fault or overzealous blocking rules
It's has been like this for a long time. For me hotmail is unusable because some emails just never arrive due to their spam filtering.
mono442··on My spicy take on vibe coding for PMs
PMs writing software seems like a terrible idea. Vibecoding still requires to be quite knowledge about the software engineering to actually get good results.
mono442··on AI Made Writing Code Easier. It Made Being an Engineer Harder
> most software engineers became engineers because they love writing code.

I don't think this is true. I'm pretty sure most of them do it because it pays good salary.

mono442··on PostmarketOS in 2026-02: generic kernels, bans use of generative AI
I use other models to do the code review.
mono442··on PostmarketOS in 2026-02: generic kernels, bans use of generative AI
I don't work on open source stuff but I work at a financial institution and genai has been a huge productivity boost. I can easily write 2x - 5x more code than before genai.
mono442··on You Just Need Postgres
A simpler and easier alternative is just using a key value db like leveldb. Eliminates the need to deal with SQL.
mono442··on AI Will Never Be Conscious
We don't really know a consciousness really is and I think it is premature to dismiss the possibility of replicating the behavior with a mathematical model.
mono442··on The Missing Semester of Your CS Education – Revised for 2026
Most people treat higher education as a pass to good paying job and I think it's unrealistic to think otherwise.
mono442··on The Missing Semester of Your CS Education – Revised for 2026
Is there even a point learning CS now with the rapid progress of agentic coding? It seems like a complete waste of money and time.
mono442··on Back to FreeBSD: Part 1
> FreeBSD reached that third stage in 2000. Linux wouldn't get there until 2008 with LXC.

OpenVZ and Linux vserver are older than LXC and were commonly used, though they required a patched kernel.

mono442··on Toyota’s hydrogen-powered Mirai has experienced rapid depreciation
It's possible to create hydrogen from coal and carbon capture is supposed to be feasible. Though I don't know how commercially viable this is.
mono442··on IPv6 Adoption in 2026
You can score subnets instead of individual ips.
