monkpit··on TIL: You can make HTTP requests without curl using Bash /dev/TCP
You might not have any say on what image is in use, for example, in a cicd library project.
monkpit··on Not everyone is using AI for everything
You can be dismissive all you want, but the point is to acknowledge you don’t understand everyone’s situation and you can’t make sweeping generalizations like “I did it and I can judge you if you _didn’t_ do it”.

What do you think privilege is?
monkpit··on Not everyone is using AI for everything
Privilege, yes. You had the privilege to dedicate time to learning skills required, obtaining an education, probably bias during hiring processes, etc.

Even though your position might be the result of effort on your part, you do have to acknowledge that you’re privileged to be in a position to expend that effort on what you want, instead of something else, like finding fresh water daily, or whatever. It’s not sheer will that you were born in a (even marginally) more favorable environment than others.

The term “privilege” here doesn’t just mean a trust fund nepo baby.

monkpit··on Not everyone is using AI for everything
You should really examine your situation and beliefs if you think this isn’t a privileged position to be in.

Sorry, was it not this?

monkpit··on Gaussian Point Splatting
Is that weird, though? I thought that was a pretty common way to do reflections, but I’m not that well-versed in the latest tech in this space.
monkpit··on Meta's ships facial recognition on smart glasses
To make matters worse, I’ve seen threads where people with these glasses discuss how to circumvent/disable the “now recording” light, so people won’t know when they’re active.
monkpit··on DNS is for people, not for IT infrastructure
Isn’t this just DNS with extra steps, anyways? Now Ansible is the DNS server, basically.
monkpit··on DNS is for people, not for IT infrastructure
> even an broken update to /etc/hosts is probably easier and faster to recover from than a broken DNS service

I fail to see how, especially if you were to accidentally break your ability to push those updates out.

monkpit··on Gaussian Point Splatting
Can someone explain the unreal demo linked here - is the reflection in the street also using splatting, or is it something else?
monkpit··on HHS is overriding peer review to require changes to research scope, design

monkpit··on Gmail thinks I'm stupid, so I left
A privileged position to be in, for sure! Congrats

Either rely upon everyone else changing their behavior, or give up and use your LLM to re-compress incoming messages to be informationally dense as you see fit.
monkpit··on A walking tour of surveillance infrastructure in Seattle (2020)
I also suspected this to be partially AI, especially when it says the cameras can “change height”?? And the vague images, like the one with the red “hotspots”.
monkpit··on Alphabet announces $80B equity capital raise to expand AI infra and compute
Do they even do logging in the traditional sense? Surely they have some bespoke googly solution.
monkpit··on Creatine raises brain energy levels and slows cognitive decline: study
The standard studied dose _is_ 5g, but the common advice you hear in the gym community is that you will see cognitive benefits from 10-20g or more, depending on your body mass. 30g isn’t uncommon. And, many believe that 5g may be too little for optimal muscle gain, again depending on your body mass.

Adverse effects, as mentioned, are mostly GI-related, some people experience bloating especially with monohydrate. Another effect is an increase in water retention, which, in turn, means you need to drink more water. It’s generally regarded as safe for the kidneys unless you already have reduced kidney function.

So, overall, not really a big deal to take well over the studied 5g dose. Not to mention the recommended loading dose is 5g 4x daily.

monkpit··on MCP is dead?
When you mention your own product in a positive light, it’s customary, yes.
monkpit··on WH proposes rules giving political appointees final approval on research grants
Pick one, it’s by choice or by hope, not both.
monkpit··on MCP is dead?
You should disclose that you are behind g8e.
monkpit··on MCP is dead?
You can’t sell that in b2b negotiations though. You can absolutely say “and for $x per user we will grant you access to our central, closed-source MCP server that does things our CLI doesn’t do”.
monkpit··on MCP is dead?
What is special about MCP to make it any more or less fragile than any other software?

MCP is a combination of a server responding to requests, and a prompt to tell the agent how to format those requests.

monkpit··on What Apple and Google are doing to push notifications
That’s also not relevant to the topic, which was transactional vs marketing app notifications, and making a correlation to email.
monkpit··on What Apple and Google are doing to push notifications
Not sure about your experience, I’ve almost never encountered a marketing email that didn’t have an unsubscribe link, as is mandated by law in some countries. So I’m not really sure what you’re talking about.

In the past, yeah. But today? Never.

monkpit··on What Apple and Google are doing to push notifications
It needs to be enforced by the OS or by law. Like how you get transactional emails without getting marketing spam. I want the same for notifications.
monkpit··on Disagreement among frontier LLMs on real-world fact-checks
What’s the point of this if they didn’t use temperature=0 for every model (they didn’t)?

They could have redone the test against the same model and gotten different answers. It’s almost like picking 2 different coins and comparing the list of coin flip results. (I realize it’s not that straightforward, it’s not 50/50, but it’s essentially the same issue.)

monkpit··on DuckDuckGo search saw 28% more visits after Google said people love AI mode
eBay was an example from the parent, insert whatever brand you want. It’s still called cannibalization and it’s something companies have stopped doing because they don’t see great results
