monkmartinez··on The origin story of our new ortholinear keyboard
I would like to second this and add some discussion. I follow /r/ErgoMechKeyboards/ and the "regular" mechanical keeb subreddits... The amount of jargon used is dizzying. I have no interest in a collection of keyboards, but would like to try to build one for myself... I have been hesitant because keyboard culture goes from like 0 to hypersonic in a day.

That is, "Buy a mechanical on Amazon to try some switches... " to "Do you want a spilt with PCB or handwired? linear, clicky, or tactile switches?, tenting with a thumb cluster? LEDS?, QMK or KMK or some other firmware? GMK caps or?, USB-C or wireless?, How many layers can you remember?" and on and on!

It seems like the JavaScript ecosystem but even more complex/subtle with no clear answers because its subjective from the start. I realize little problems with one keyboard lead to buying another and so on. How do you buy a kit to build yourself without having to invest the hours of learning the culture?

monkmartinez··on Snowboarding for Geeks: An Ultimate Guide (2018)
So happy to read this. All I have ever done is snowboard... 25 years of it. I am going to try skiing next month and I am just excited to not have to strap in on every run! I don't care that I will have to walk all dumb around the restaurant, lol.
monkmartinez··on Snowboarding for Geeks: An Ultimate Guide (2018)
Everyone falls a ton when learning to snowboard IME. Myself, 25 years ago, was miserable for two days with a destroyed coccyx and thought I had permanently damaged my butt. My kids who are both very athletic fell like crazy when learning... and they basically plowed the runs for the first year or so until they were brave enough to go toe side.

I am going to try skiing for the first time next month. I am excited to get off the ground.

monkmartinez··on Snowboarding for Geeks: An Ultimate Guide (2018)
I came to this same conclusion two weekends ago in Flagstaff. I am 43 and have only snowboarded my entire life. Lots and lots when I was younger, not as much anymore with kids, their club soccer and demanding schools. I am a professional firefighter and get paid to workout at work... so I am not elite athletic, but I am fit.

My hips just don't have the same mobility they once did. Sitting down at the top every single run is tiring and I am beginning to dislike that one aspect the most. My wife skis and she just stands there peacefully while the kids and I strap in. I never paid much attention to this until this last trip... "I am a snowboarder and this is part of the deal." Well, I am not much into that part of the deal any longer.

Walking around the resort or restaurants in ski boots doesn't look like it feels as good as snowboard boots. However, I think I am willing to give that up for convenience on the runs... which is why I am there spending a fortune after all.

So, I decided that I am going to rent skis and just send it over spring break for a two day trip. My kids say they are going to disown me... that's ok, I can cruze with their mom (lol)! Watching them strap in without grunting and twisting due to their far superior flexibility is awesome... I remember that, its just time to move on and just enjoy the time on the mountain; COMFORTABLY.

Unfortunately, Pi-hole does not work for Youtube ads... At least, I have been unable to find a reliable way to implement it. My house would be much better for it, but I can not seem to find a solution.

Safety squints are a time honored tradition. Sometimes you just need to Send It. We have a guy on our fire department that lost a finger a few months ago. It's completely irrational, but I am jealous in a strange way.
monkmartinez··on Fake vaccine cards are everywhere. It’s a public health nightmare
They are not different. I can assure you that we don't run many 911 calls on gym rats, runners, cyclists and hikers... unless they have injured themselves doing said activities. Drunk idiots and Obese people are the overwhelming majority of our calls.
monkmartinez··on Fake vaccine cards are everywhere. It’s a public health nightmare
I can tell you as a first responder, it doesn't matter. The "vaccine" is a damn joke. I am F**ing exhausted this morning, and I don't care anymore. We are being run in the ground across the country with people quitting left and right.

Fake vaccine cards are the least of our worries. You heard it here first. The emergency medical system is in deep trouble for way too many reasons to enumerate here.

Anecdote time; I responded to the same 200 person retirement home 3 times last night (Thus the "grumpy" tude). "Mask up" signs everywhere, every employee wearing a mask properly, NO visitors for the past month, etc. AND the place is at least 80% infected with Covid. Every resident is "fully vaccinate with boosters"!

The eldery that live there are pissed, we are pissed and the staff is running on fumes. They were told they were getting a vaccine... their definition of vaccine doesn't include still getting the disease, but just a little less sever (which, incidentally has NOT been the case for a lot of them). That doesn't make sense to them or me if I am being honest.

They are sick, some of them really sick. There isn't much we can do except to give them options... stay home and fight the fever/sickness yourself or go to ER and wait for hours (depending on severity of symptoms). We are waiting for transports to the ER for an hour or more as the wall time at ER's explodes due to staffing shortages across the board.

I don't see a difference between what I saw in April, May and June of 2020 and now, with respect to Covid... with the exception of less people willing to work at ER's and EMS. Call numbers are UP massively as everyone thinks covid is going to kill them instantly. Its like people forgot how to take care of a common cold as was the case when Covid hit initially. Treat the fever, drink fluids the second you start feeling bad... don't wait until you have a 104 temp to start taking care of yourself.

I am so jaded with how bad people are at doing ANYTHING for themselves. I often wonder how people have made it to the age of 60, 75, 80 with the kinds of lifestyles I see out there. SO MANY OBESE PEOPLE. SO MANY. You wonder why you are sick? really?

monkmartinez··on No amount of alcohol is good for the heart, says World Heart Federation
IF the "few beers" turns into ONE too many, it will lead to the same career and social suicide. Driving under the influence, fighting, lewd acts, etc... I live in a state where Weed is legal. I don't see people high decide to fight everyone at the party. I have seen this with alcohol more than I care to admit.
monkmartinez··on Phenomenological Introduction to PID Controllers
The old ship steering analogy:

P: is steering hard because you are off course.

I: is steering into the wind to counteract wind drift and into the current to counteract opposing currents as you move toward course.

D: is reducing steering input as you close on the intended course

monkmartinez··on Study: Most Dog Breeds Highly Inbred
Same experience.

Our goldendoodle is fantastic. Our neighbors can't believe she just chills with us in the front yard without a leash. They can't let their dogo out of the house without a fence or leash. She only barks once in a blue moon and everyone in the house is on immediate high alert when she does. Generally, its salesperson walking up the front driveway. She doesn't bark at UPS/Fedex any longer... which is good this time of year.

I run her every other day a few miles and she is right with me, generally off leash. When she sees a lizard tho, its game over. I have to stop and physically pull her off the bush she is buried in to get the lizard. She is very food motivated and the word "treat" is spelled out in our house because she will not leave you alone until she gets something if she hears that word.

My only complaint is grooming. To do it properly, I've been told requires brushing her everyday. Not happening. I have tried to do it 3 times a week... it takes like two hours and is completely exhausting. We just get her shaved every two months or so.

monkmartinez··on Node-RED: How an open-source tool is establishing itself in Industrial IoT

monkmartinez··on The popularity of e-bikes isn’t slowing down
I don't have assist. I went strait throttle and I have about 20 miles before I get voltage sag that is really annoying.
monkmartinez··on The popularity of e-bikes isn’t slowing down
This is exactly what I did. I wanted to learn DC circuits and battery technology and I did that in spades.

Batteries are really simple, just need to respect them. If you are going to use recycled batteries, I suggest you buy a Opus c3400 tester. Run them through a complete charge/discharge cycle to identify capacity and bad cells. If they get hot, take them out and properly recycle them at Autozone. Otherwise, write down the capacity on the cell.

You can use repakr once you have 100 cells or so. I went with a 13s6p configuration for a 48volt system. I learned a ton from Micah Toll's DIY Lithium Battery book. Also, register at Endless-Sphere and start reading. Eventually the information will coalesce and you can start to buy bits and bobs. Take your time and don't rush buying right away... lots to learn.

monkmartinez··on The popularity of e-bikes isn’t slowing down
I just built one with recycled laptop batteries... super fun to ride. It was a shit ton of work to do the batteries right, but I learned so much. Endless-Sphere is where my build thread is...

My bike is 2004 Specialized mountain bike. Bought the motor from ebay and just bolted it on. The battery lives in a home sewn bag I made which I velcro strapped to the frame. I have gone about 35mph on it. Do not recommend super high speeds unless you are a capable bike rider.

It looks like a mad max experiment. I just wanted to ride the thing and wire management is def an afterthought. I do not ride anywhere I can't take it inside with me even though I only have about $500 into it. Too much work to risk theft.

So much fun to ride. Peeling out in dirt is thrilling on bicycle.

monkmartinez··on Zillow seeks to sell 7k homes for $2.8B after flipping halt
They are losing money hand over fist in Tucson. I have several zillow signs in my neighborhood right now. Priced at ridiculous levels and Zillow paid an even more ridiculousness(fitting word play) price to "acquire" the home. Its laughable.

Boots on the ground here telling you the market in the Southwest is jacked up... again. I bought my house in 2009 as a foreclosure and I see the same signs I saw in 2007 all over again. I can't speak for the rest of the country, but Phoenix and Tucson are going to be real estate nightmares in 2022.

monkmartinez··on Zillow seeks to sell 7k homes for $2.8B after flipping halt
They simply overpaid. My neighbor received an offer of $150k over the z-estimate in Tucson. He felt that it would be stupid not to sell and wasn't even thinking about selling before the offer came in, so he sold. He paid a slight premium to buy his new house out in the boonies, but the gain offset the rise in price. They are currently listing his old house at the zestimate... I doubt they find a buyer even at that price unless its someone from out of state that has no clue.

I don't think it takes a rocket scientist to see the hockey stick graph on Zillow's price div to see this isn't a great time buy. It makes me giggle to think about what they were thinking. Some houses have tripled in "value" in a year. It's artificial and it will revert to the mean. Income in this city simply doesn't support the price level we are at for renting or buying. People are moving into apartments or out into the sticks to wait it out.

monkmartinez··on Zillow seeks to sell 7k homes for $2.8B after flipping halt
Well, if Nashville is like Tucson... or any other similarly sized city, those houses are likely not in a great part of town. We have 203 houses and condos under $175k in Tucson right now. I wouldn't live in any of them for their location(s) alone. Suckers from out of state have been buying... and I am sure regret the decision when they have homeless, tweakers and other ne'er-do-well's sleeping in the back yard or stealing anything that isn't bolted down.

Zillow has been buying in my neighborhood, and they overpaid... plain and simple. The offers my neighbors received were too good to be true. I mean, $50k to $150k over the z-estimate. Everyone in Tucson is laughing at Zillow all the way to the bank. Prices are going to crash here and its going to be brutal.

monkmartinez··on The main thing about Phenylacetone meth is that there's so much of it
The reason Meth use is going up is not due to Meth itself. It counter balances the effects of Fentanyl. I regularly go to Fentanyl overdoses where the bystanders tell me they ran out of "G" or "Glass" and simply overdid it with the "M30's"... Its a fucking nightmare.

It used to be "meth" users would say..."At least I am not a dope junky using H." Heroin users would say... "At least I am not a tweaker." Now they are one in the same when I see them, which is generally cyanotic, apneic, and have been down for a while. We don't have enough Narcan to counter a bad batch of "M30" pills. Talk to your kids and tell them not to use any pills, not even once.

monkmartinez··on reMarkable Connect subscription plans
Totally lame. I have tried so many note taking services and apps that my head spins when I think about it. Notion, Notability, OneNote, Evernote, Apple Notes, Google Keep, Squid, and more...

At this point, I am 100% OneNote and a physical paper notebook. I use OneNote on every single device I own including a Raspberry Pi. I use the handwriting features of OneNote with an iPad pro to sketch ideas while researching. I can also keep handwritten todo's for bigger projects organized with OneNote. I use klipper from my Desktop and Laptop to capture websites into OneNote books all organized by topic. I can get these on my iPhone and iPad. My garage houses my CNC and 3D printers running on Raspberry Pi's. I can look up settings and configurations for my machines inside the notebooks and modify them as needed or just copy and paste from notebook to commandline... all sync'ed to EVERY.DEVICE.I.OWN with a browser or native support in most cases.

These walled gardens are sooooo tired. My paper notebook is the backup and used when I want to sketch or think without distraction from the internet's ubiquitous pull. I take pictures and post those notes into OneNote every now and then to develop the idea further. OneNote on the iPhone makes that super simple and the friction is literally two clicks.

Sometimes, my handwriting will be legible enough to strait OCR into a notebook! I find the OCR to be remarkable for most things, but its not perfect and fails too. However, the whole ecosystem is very much worth the price!

monkmartinez··on N.I.N.A. – Nighttime Imaging 'N' Astronomy
I am aware of Astrophotography on a limited/thats a thing basis and would like to give it a go someday. That said, I think its pretty self-explanatory that you will need some kind of imaging capturing device as a first step to even have interest in this project. The documentation is on the home page... :https://nighttime-imaging.eu/docs/master/site/requirements/

Not to be too snide, but I highly doubt you'll need a waterproof bag if you are trying to take images of Space at night... Kinda hard to see through clouds.

monkmartinez··on Apple M1 Max Geekbench Score
Yes, Nvidia GPU's are a major reason I switched to PC about 3 years ago. That and I can upgrade RAM and SSD's myself on desktops and laptops. The power from professional apps like Solidworks, Agisoft metashape, and some Adobe products with a Nvidia card and drivers is like night and day with a Mac at the time I switched.

Does Apple have any ISV certified offerings? I can't find one. I suspect Apple will never win the Engineering crowd with the M1 switch... so many variable go into these systems builds and Apple just doesn't have that business model.

Even with these crazy M1's, I still have doubts about Apple winning the Movie/Creative market. LED walls, Unreal Engine, Unity are being used for SOOOO much more than just games now. The hegemony of US centric content creation is also dwindling... budget rigs are a heck of lot easier to source and pay for than M1's in most parts of the world.

monkmartinez··on Learn electronics technology, IT and fiber optics technology
I like the aesthetic of the page and understand they are "talking their book"... but I have to wonder if there is any merit to the claims they state on the web page: "Today, the last generation of technicians is retiring faster than the next is being trained to replace them. ETA International reports that there is a critical shortage of electronics technicians. Universities educate electrical engineers but do not usually train technicians for electronics service and repair." [1]

Is there a real demand for these skills out there? What does the pay structure look like?

I assume these types of jobs would require lots of travel if you are not in a big city... or there are few opportunities if you do not live in a place with lots of industry. I have so many questions... As I near retirement from my first career, I think about doing something to stay challenged into my 50's and 60's.

monkmartinez··on This real estate bubble won't pop
I love this article! These types of articles are the signs the market is about to turn over. The eviction moratorium and mortgage forbearance programs just ended. It will take some time for the contagion from those programs to propagate thru the housing market.

Secondly, you can not get massive inflation with the velocity of money in the dumps[1]. Probabilistically, we are going to see stagflation until demand drops off due to higher prices and supply chains normalize. With "free" money drying up from "stimulus" packages, the demand for goods and services should wane in the coming months. There are various charts that show this starting to happen now. (Steve Van Metre on Youtube is good for macro stuff)

Thirdly, I recently watched a video from the Global Labor Org. [2] that made a few bold claims. One of which was, the US is probably already in another recession with consumer sentiment being the "tell." Interesting stuff. The methods are non-traditional to arrive at this conclusion and time will tell if they are bold and right or bold and wrong. I happen to believe they are right...

Anecdotally, I work the streets as EMS and Fire for my city, blue collar... but stable and can make SWE money with overtime. I worked through the GFC of 2008 and I see soooo many similarities, mostly in my colleagues at the station. Lots of them buy the most house they can afford monthly while living on the edge of personal solvency. They extract money from the property via HELOC to buy toys and remodel endlessly. If rates rise even a tiny bit, that party comes to a screeching halt. "Assets" are dumped at fire sale prices or they will simply walk away, ala 2008-09.

Yes, blackrock is buying thousands of properties, no one that pays attention will dispute that. However, we don't know how exposed these hedge funds are to the Evergrande collapse contagion that will spread like Covid in the coming months (ironic, no?). If these hedge funds are leveraged to the gills with bad paper, they will collapse and the houses will be sold at fire sale prices. My money is on the whole thing being exposed in ways we do not comprehend.... yet.

monkmartinez··on Ask HN: Have you experienced any real word examples of the chip shortage?
