monkeyspaw··on My letter to Jim Franklin about why I'm leaving SendGrid
You can't seriously suggest that she deserved the misogynistic abuse heaped on after the fact, can you?
monkeyspaw··on Adria Richards, PyCon, and How We All Lost
FWIW, I think the colorful and abusive language in this instance did a good job conveying additional information about the poster's mindset, opinion, and how they relate to others.

Note that it doesn't reflect well on them. Part of their point is how they say it. To me, this says they're being reactionary and not mindful of others, which undermines their standing.

Bad language is a useful signal in communication. In this case, especially, it's a negative signal about the poster.

Wow, I thought you were kidding, but it looks like they've taken about $250 million in funding.

What have they spent it on? I have a mental disconnect between companies like Evernote and 37 signals. Why did Evernote need all that money?

monkeyspaw··on Show HN: Weekend project, Intro.js
Any chance you guys released that as open source? This is exactly what I want. Would be even better if it animated the boxes, so that the users eye is drawn to what you're showing them.

All these projects are really impressive.

monkeyspaw··on Bacn is the New Spam
My understanding is that it's derived from 1970s database programmers "spamming the database" with dummy data. The original term comes from Monty Python's Spamalot skit, I believe.
monkeyspaw··on Ask HN: Is 25 too late to become a proficient developer?
Nope.

It's a lot easier than you think to become a developer who can create products that have value.

OTOH, I've been coding for > 20 years, majored in CS, and I'm still light years away from the C hackers I see often around here.

Just depends on your goals. Keep improving. Web apps aren't difficult to become proficient at creating. Hacking the linux kernel or building realtime trading systems is a lot harder.

monkeyspaw··on MIT's charm school for geeks turns 20
I was an engineering student at a top 20 university who did something similar to this. Southern school, manners were important. The university put on an etiquette dinner to help engineering students grasp the finer points of dining.

To this day, I reference that one dinner at least once a month.

monkeyspaw··on Ask HN: What does your customer interview process looks like?
I'm currently about to start CustDev interviews for the first time. Did you pull your questions out of Steve Blank's book, or generate them yourself?

If you're open to sharing the questions, I would love to take a gander to see what I can learn.

Thanks!
