monkeyfacebag··on Currying in JavaScript
I'm still not getting the relationship to dependency injection. What is pipelining?
monkeyfacebag··on Currying in JavaScript
I'm not following. How is dependency injection like inheritance and also useless?
monkeyfacebag··on A case against syntax highlighting (2007)
Douglas Crockford has made a similar argument. https://www.crockford.com/contextcoloring.html
monkeyfacebag··on A case against syntax highlighting (2007)
I'm confused. This article is about syntax highlighting, not semantic highlighting. Do you have semantic highlighting set up.or syntax highlighting? If the former, what are are you using?
monkeyfacebag··on Ex-Googlers raise $40M to democratize natural-language AI
Is "democratize" the hip way to spell "sell" these days?
monkeyfacebag··on My MacBook Pro had over 10k USD in repairs
I don't want to yuck anyone's yum but the thought of maintaining, keeping charged, finding room for and managing data on so many computers sounds like a nightmare to me.
monkeyfacebag··on The Coronavirus Is Here Forever
I’m old enough to remember when we didn’t know who was infected and who wasn’t infected.
monkeyfacebag··on The Big Sleep: The most baffling film ever made?
Do Christopher Nolan films have a reputation for being baffling? I've never had that experience with them.

On the other hand, we just saw The Green Knight and that one will throw you.

monkeyfacebag··on Ask HN: What is the HN of Cryptocurrency?
I don't understand. How have you determined the anti crypto sentiment is due to pavlovian hate and not rational disagreement?
monkeyfacebag··on Apple’s Mistake
I'm unclear how this is distinct from an algorithm. Can you clarify?
monkeyfacebag··on I wrote a children's book / illustrated guide to Apache Kafka
Maybe it's just you, maybe not. It would be beneficial for you to provide some substance to your claim. Then we would have something to discuss.
monkeyfacebag··on Amazon Prime inflates prices, using the false promise of ‘free shipping’
Can you please explain this or provide a link for those of us who aren’t read into Costco hearing aids?
monkeyfacebag··on Why do drum sets have descending toms?
Drum sets are pretty weird in general. I play the drums but I don't know much about their history or development and I've always felt the kit feels like an arbitrary arrangement of circles for me to hit. There's nothing "unifying" about it for want of a better term.
monkeyfacebag··on Go+: Go designed for data science
> Go has a ton of potential in the data science space.

Does it? I'm not familiar with Go data science applications but the design of the language, tooling and runtime, eg low latency garbage collector, errors thrown for unused imports, do not, to me, seem to fit well with the needs of data science. I'm interested in hearing what advantages Go brings.

monkeyfacebag··on WallStreetBets vs WallStreet: It's not about the money anymore
This is just a rant. There's no insight, evidence or analysis to be found in the article.
monkeyfacebag··on Ask HN: Is it technically possible to evade big-tech censorship?
Of course not. Where do I say that? Please don't attempt to slide me into a position I didn't take. That's bad faith.

For the record, if Trump called up Maggie Haberman and gave an on-the-record interview, I'm sure that would get covered too!

monkeyfacebag··on Ask HN: Is it technically possible to evade big-tech censorship?
Harder to blame "big tech" in that case!

I guarantee you that if he called into Fox, his comments would be carried by every media outlet and discussed exhaustively on Twitter.

monkeyfacebag··on Gene Wolfe Turned Science Fiction into High Art (2019)
There is are some concrete things that contribute to this feeling for me, such as Baldanders becoming a recurring and central figure in the plot.
monkeyfacebag··on Gene Wolfe Turned Science Fiction into High Art (2019)
Shadow of the Torturer is one of my all time favorite books. I confess I was less impressed with the rest of the Book of the New Sun as the world seemed to constrict as it went on, rather than expand. In spite of that, I think they're all worth reading.
monkeyfacebag··on Teachers are ready to quit rather than put their lives at risk
wait, what is the CDC then? I am not trying to argue with you. I haven't heard the take that the US government doesn't have a public health role and am looking to learn.
monkeyfacebag··on U.S. backs down in fight with Harvard, MIT over student visas
I wanted to kick out the students but I wasn't able to convince the deep state so re-elect me isn't the most compelling campaign message under any scenario.
monkeyfacebag··on German court bans Tesla ad statements related to autonomous driving
Aren't the ads largely targeted to non-owners? Even if I agreed with your point, I just don't see how it's relevant.
monkeyfacebag··on Keeping your Go modules compatible
This comment would benefit immensely from a single concrete example. As it is, it scans as bluster.
monkeyfacebag··on Go generics draft design: building a hashtable
In my opinion, the new design doc clearly characterizes this as a design goal of the parser, rather than a hard constraint that cannot be resolved.

"Resolving that requires effectively unbounded lookahead. In general we strive to keep the Go parser simple."

It's totally fair to question the tradeoff - should having a simple parser outweigh the potential ergonomic benefit of <>? I don't know. The forum for this is probably the golang-nuts group.

monkeyfacebag··on Go generics draft design: building a hashtable
On <> syntax, this has been discussed quite a bit. () were chosen to avoid ambiguous parsing.

Also note that generic methods are not allowed in the current design, only generic functions.

The new draft design ( https://go.googlesource.com/proposal/+/refs/heads/master/des... ) discusses both of these points. I recommend everyone who is interested in this topic read the design spec, ideally before commenting.

monkeyfacebag··on Young U.S. men having a lot less sex in the 21st century, study shows
I feel like I'm missing something here. If you're in the top 3-5% of men, why are you sleeping with the bottom 50% (or lower) of women?
monkeyfacebag··on Large-Scale Transactional Data Lake at Uber Using Apache Hudi
I think you may be conflating Hadoop the mapreduce framework with Hadoop the ecosystem, which includes hdfs, Hive, Spark and others. To the best of my knowledge, former is waning in popularity (supplanted by tools like Spark), but the latter remains in wide use.
monkeyfacebag··on U.S. Should Open America’s Doors to Hong Kong’s Citizens
Do you feel similarly about the citizens of North Korea?
monkeyfacebag··on Apple unveils biggest update to Logic since the launch of Logic Pro X
Relative to the competition, Logic is an incredible value. I am an Ableton Live user, but Logic, an arguably superior product, is available for a fraction of the cost of Live Studio. I have my fingers crossed that Ableton can catch up on some of Logic's features (flex pitch comes to mind).
monkeyfacebag··on Uber CEO Says Layoff Decision to Be Announced Within Two Weeks
I would be surprised if middle managers at Uber have access to the plan at this point.
