mondo9000··on Human Contact Is Now a Luxury Good
Video game playing has at least one notable crossover to real-life in the case of race car driving. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jann_Mardenborough
mondo9000··on Ask HN: Tricks to Avoid Eye Problems?
DevTools Theme: Zero Dark Matrix if you are looking at chrome inspector, https://darkreader.org/, f.lux, dark mode in your IDE
mondo9000··on Holdout Jeff Bezos Confronted by Amazon Moms Demanding Day Care
I heard someone on the radio (on a different topic) ask "what's the space for social action here?" I think this is an interesting framework to view these kind of events.
mondo9000··on The hard part in becoming a command line wizard
you can use vi and vim, but I'll just use nano.
mondo9000··on The hard part in becoming a command line wizard
Its 2019, learning to program like its 1975 might not be a good use of time.
mondo9000··on Ask HN: Finding tech talent is getting harder. It's not a Bay Area problem only
People willing to spend a few hours of their day doing a "homework assignment" will tilt towards the spectrum of people who have a lot of free time which might not intersect that well with the set of people you want to hire.
mondo9000··on Prisons Are an Abomination
>> It has only been invoked twice in the last 150 years, both times for doctrinal statements relating to Mariology

This is a common but absurd misconception, implying that only twice in 2000 years a pope made a statement that fulfills the requirements outlined in Vatican I, ie. making a statement 1) regarding faith and morals, 2) directed to the entire church.

mondo9000··on Ask HN: Before We Spend Millions, What Do You Think of This Blockchain Use Case?
Walk me through the process. Lets assume I made a film.

1) where does the film get uploaded to?

2) how do I get $$ out of this process so I can pay rent?

3) how do you pay your investors back?

mondo9000··on James Watson and the Insidiousness of Scientific Racism
Of course it was a hoax because the story was so ridiculous on its face and now Smollett needs a defense attorney[1]. Not quite as outrageous as 2017 Jewish Community Center bomb threats [2] which were also blamed on "the rise of white nationalism in Trump's America." yet serving the same political purpose: demonizing republicans, conservatives, whites and unifying groups on the left as they feel they are under attack.

mondo9000··on Ask HN: Any success stories with token-based employee incentives?
Ethereum is a 'success story', but its not 2015 anymore. I think you'd mad to take tokens as a form of compensation. Why not get a normal job and buy some crypto if you want to gamble?
mondo9000··on NBC took Bob Costas off the Super Bowl for speaking out about concussions
Parents worried about CTE are threatening the talent pipeline, but the insurance angle is just as interesting

mondo9000··on Hawaii considers ban on cigarette sales
I read the link: "Hill and colleagues have suggested that the pattern of decline in smoking prevalence correlates with the level of tobacco control activities occurring at the time.11,12 The drop in male smoking rates seen in the early 1980s coincided with a period of new, well-funded media-led Quit campaigns"
mondo9000··on Hawaii considers ban on cigarette sales
Why do you assume the long-term decline is natural and not a consequence of the various policies? Where is proof for that assumption?

There's a bunch of studies on scholar.google about the effects of anti-smoking regulation for the interested.

mondo9000··on Hawaii considers ban on cigarette sales
Smoking declined from 20% of the US population to 15% from 2005 to 2015 so the efforts are making an impact.
mondo9000··on Hawaii considers ban on cigarette sales
>>banning any drug worked in the past?

It a part of the spectrum of control. When smoking is banned in bars and restaurants or heavily taxed like in Australia ($40 AUD!), prevalence of smoking declines.

mondo9000··on James Watson and the Insidiousness of Scientific Racism
I'm happy they are investigating it, and I look forward to their report.
mondo9000··on James Watson and the Insidiousness of Scientific Racism
That's what happened according to TMZ... I'll be surprised if 5% of the story is true.
mondo9000··on Immigrants Do a Great Job at Becoming Americans
There used to be Little Italy and German parts of town and such, but they disappeared with suburban white flight.
mondo9000··on Immigrants Do a Great Job at Becoming Americans
I think its just white Americans with that problem, other groups seem to have an identity. Why don't white Americans seem to have a culture? I think its an interesting question, I have various ideas, but nothing compelling.
mondo9000··on The Buzzfeed Lesson
I tried the Wall Street Journal Online, since I think news about money is more real, but their website wasn't very good [1], I think there's still hope to get paying subscribers if the online reading experience is more pleasant.

1) Right now WSJ has three columns of text because they want consistency with their hardcopy, but it doesn't feel right for a laptop.

mondo9000··on “Facebook are going to monetize encrypted messaging by consolidating metadata”
The Facebook outrage mob reminds me of my slashdot days when everyone referred to Microsoft as Micro$oft.

Doesn't it feel weird that there used to be positive facebook stories, but now its all negative 24/7?

mondo9000··on Continuing our work to improve recommendations on YouTube
The strange thing about slippery slope is that it is both a logical fallacy and an effective means to accomplish political objectives (of course one does things incrementally)

Left wing conspiracies are usually narrow in scope: the Republican party, the Koch brothers, George Soros, Dick Cheney, the Oil Industry, its not really the same as a intra-national conspiracy that transcends party lines.

mondo9000··on Shutdown Will Be Worse for Economy Than First Thought, White House Says
I watched the vox video what's wrong with it? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LY_Yiu2U2Ts
mondo9000··on Shutdown Will Be Worse for Economy Than First Thought, White House Says
>> is proper enforcement of our laws

11 million illegal/undocumented in the USA, what does enforcement even mean at this point?

If you punish the employers then the immigrants have to rely on the welfare system.

mondo9000··on Shutdown Will Be Worse for Economy Than First Thought, White House Says
The European Union has a wall in Africa that seven layers thick, Israel has border walls, Berlin was divided by a wall up until the 1989. Walls are not relegated to the middle ages.
mondo9000··on Ask HN: Who is the most positive impactful person you know?
The urban landscape is changing from auto-centric to human-centric (pedestrian areas, bike-lanes, light-rail). Jan Gehl and Janette Sadik-Khan are two prominent examples, but there are many others.
mondo9000··on Ask HN: What was the Internet like before corporations got their hands on it?
You had to make it interesting. No twitter/instagram/youtube feed. You had to dig around for the exiting areas.

One thing lost (maybe I am projecting here) is a sense of optimism... and the power of the individual (once upon a time L0pht declared they could take down the Internet in 30 mins) I once thought the information age would have a profound impact on democratic institutions, but this hasn't really panned out.

Now the new frontier is being conquered by the State, hard censorship in China, soft censorship in the West (what if my employer reads this? will this get me banned from youtube / patreon / ...)

mondo9000··on Ask HN: How do you organize everything you want to do?
There's a lot of valid perspectives, but I think its some kind of false reward system. Archiving a link on neural-networks is a low effort task that superficially appears to move you toward your goal of machine learning, whereas the Coursera class takes work (ie. not fun struggling with Octave syntax)
mondo9000··on Ask HN: How do you organize everything you want to do?
Realize that this behavior is just fancy procrastination. I can collect recipes all day, but it won't make me a better cook.
